I think it is so interesting that in addition to being a cultural icon, she went on to have a long, productive, everyday life. She was a real person. RIP.

Sad day. Clara was a friend of my family since the 1960s. She will be missed.

Yeah I'm thinking that this special lady deserves a statue at the state capitol or somewhere where all can see it,infact all people who were involved in the Civil Rights movement here should have some kind of monument IMO!

There is, or at least there used to be, a small monument on MLK dedicated to several folk. I do not recall if it is still there or not. I agree there could be better recognition for the efforts of several folk from our own history in the metro.

Somewhere in the downtown area near the location of the Katz Drug Store would be appropriate.

Too bad nobody thought about doing something like this while she was alive.

Isn't there a monument to her near 23rd and Broadway?

Isn't there a monument to her near 23rd and Broadway?

THe stretch of 23rd between 235 and 35 is officially the Clara Luper Corridor. I believe there is a stone pillar at each end.

She is also on the Monument for important African Americans, Oklahomans ans non-oklahomans alike, at the Freedom Center in 2600 block of North MLK.

She probably ought to have more recognition than she has, but she has been recognized in the past for her contributions.

I never had Clara Luper as a teacher but have friends who did and they all speak highly of her. When she was teaching in the Oklahoma City Public Schools, she taught at John Marshall and Northwest Classen - maybe another one. The New York Times has a really nice obit. Somehow or other reading it in the NYT made me all misty. I was holding up real good when all the talk was local.
I'm sure glad she passed our way.
