OK, so Tulsa is going to get its third. Has anyone heard if OKC is going to have any opened soon?

Dick's isn't that great, but is better than Academy. REI is much better, hopefully they come to Oklahoma eventually.

If Dick's is better, it is an inperceptable difference. Neither is special at all.

The family that owns Academy is selling out to KKR (Kohlberg Kravis & Roberts), Henry Kravis was born in Tulsa.

Whats the deal with Tulsa getting 3 Dick's Sporting Goods Stores? Surely OKC will be getting a Dick's soon.

Dick's is not better than Academy. The decor may be better, but the merchandise at Dick's is weak, unless all you like is regular flex shafted golf clubs and jogging gear. Academy has loads of outdoor stuff that Dick's does not.

It depends on the Dick's store, some are very large and have much more than other stores. Especially ones like the acquired Galyan's chain like Stonebrier Mall in Frisco. I preferred Galyan's to Dick's, also prefer Gander Mountain.

I agree with this. The bigger Dick's are so much better.

I've only been in one of the super-sized Dicks's Sporting Goods stores. Of course that was a HUGE store and not one of the normal ones. But I will say it felt like they didn't really have anything that different than Academy. Unless they have more of a sporting goods focus rather than Outdoor...but that't not the impression I got. Seems like two flavors of the same thing...one just spends more on the look of the store.

It wouldn't hurt to have some competition for Academy though bombermwc.

I'm all for some new retail competition but Dicks only appears to be bigger and has a little better store design. But I will say that the last several times I've been in academy I've been impressed with what they had. They offer basically everything you'll need sporting wise, and usually at a good price. I think people dog it because of the look of some of their stores. Nothing very fancy.

The Dick's stores in Northern Virginia have a wider selection of New Balance and North Face items than Academy did the last time I went around Christmastime, but those brands are more of a personal preference.

Don't get me wrong I like Academy, But again it woudn't hurt to have competition. Dicks Sporting Goods needs to open a store over in the Quail Springs area for starters.

I'm definitely not against competition or anything. I think it would be great to have another option. But I just won't be wetting my pants in anticipation for it like some folks here are....because it's pretty much the same store.....that is unless we got a mega-store. Then that's a whole new ball of wax.

I don't seeing them being much competion for Academy or Bass Pro. The general consensus from the reviews I read (which consisted of people from several areas around the country) was they were overpriced, lacked on selection and customer service was similar to Walmart. Employee: If you want buy it, fine let me ring you up. Just don't ask me anything about it. Because I'm Just as clueless as you are.)

I also noticed they don't carry handguns just mediocre shotguns and rifles. Right now Academy is the place to go in Oklahoma City if your into shooting sports and outdoor supplies. They almost always have what I'm looking for and the price is reasonable. Not to mention the products are built to last unlike the cheap might as well be disaposable gear they sell at Walmart.

I see the opposite. Dick's Sporting Goods has way more selection than Academy and everytime I go to Dick's where I live in Dallas the service is great and the staff are very friendly. I would like to see Dick"s in OKC for competition reasons because in my opinion, Academy has a lot to be desired.

I disagree as well, have you ever even been to a Dick's? You can't get North Face or Murrell at Academy, Academy is for the redneck outdoorsman crowd, and the value price crowd. They carry very little selection of quality apparel, and other sports gear like Golf, or running. Dicks doesn't carry kitche stuff and random junk like Academy.

If not mistaken the rendering was showing possible/hoped for tenants and nothing firm. Don't recall which thread it was in but someone pointed out that the frontage for each store would be much smaller than their normal ones (therefore unlikely to be really happening). Guess we will just have to wait and see.

Yeah, I started that thread. The "Dick's Sporting Goods" was one of several stores depicted in an artist's rendering of the completely rebuilt/remodeled Brookwood Shopping Center on the SE corner of SW 89th and Western. Other subjective tenants in the rendering included a Tru Value hardware store. That said, I do believe they were renderings/conceptual illustrations only - I don't think they were intended to convey contracted tenants. It would be great to have some nice, new options in that center.

Have you ever tried to buy shoes at Academy? It is junk. They are just lined up like they would be at Payless or Shoe Carnival. You just rumage through and hope to find your size. There selection is pretty poor too.
The golf section is a joke. Its the equivalent of 1 aisle at a Wal-Mart and they do not sell the latest models of clubs. Dicks would be a welcome edition, I would love to see one on the NW side.

I am not brand shopper. I learned a long time ago that many of the brand names are not any better quality then most of the house brands sold at each store. In most cases you are paying for the name and nothing more. Then it top it all off, they get to use you for free advertising. I look at the quality of the item before the name. Buying a brand name does not mean your getting a quality product. I refuse to pay $80.00 for an item that only has $10.00 worth of material and workmanship put in to it just so I can have a brand name.

I was in one of the new Tulsa stores yesterday and they said they were coming to OKC in 6 or 7 months but did not know the location(s).

I can not confirm this information on their website or through contacting anyone through the website.

I have also been to Cabela's in Kansas City and there store in Phoenix.
Among other things they have the best selection of high quality extreme cold weather gear that I have ever found.

Cabella's is more akin to Bass Pro than Dick's. Academy (or Sports Authority) would be the direct competitor to Dick's, not Cabela's.

I had heard at one point Cabela's wanted to come to OKC but was told since Bass Pro was already here. They weren't interested. If this is so, Edmond and surrounding cities need to take note of this and capitolize on it. Would be good to have both Bass Pro and Cabela's in town.

There have been rumors that there was a Dick's sporting goods heading for the remodeled Brookwood shopping center at SW 89th and Western. Now, I'll immediately caveat that by saying that rumor had started (at least from one angle) by virtue of an artist's rendering of the remodeled mall that included a "Dick's" sign over one of the shops, which was clearly a conjectural rendering...

Cabelas was rumored to go on the east side of I35 in Moore a few years back before the economy tanked.

Long before that, there was an actual rendering and plan to put one at Memorial and Western. There is an old old thread on here with rendering and tenant list somewhere. Then the economy tanked and it fell through.

I was very excited when they first opened the locations but after shopping there I've been disappointed and remain an Academy shopper.

They offer way too much yuppie apparel and high end stuff most ordinary people don't want or need - each time I go in there I feel like the place is where people go to shop who try to pick up other people at the gym.

I have bought an Olympic weight set there and I've been very happy with it but to date that's all I've purchased. I've gone in a few other times only to be informed that they don't carry the stuff they have on their website.

It sounds like you are one of them - im sorry to hear that.

Here is some honest advice for the store. There are certain areas in OKC that really nice golf attire and top of the line equipment would be ideal - basically up north. The rest of the town really isnt into golf as a whole and the people who live in those other areas treat golf as an occasional treat and dont need/want pro equipment. As a whole they (west, east, south) are more into boating, hunting, fishing, bbq, camping, tailgating, etc.

For many golf is something to do with your buddys to get away from your wife/kids for a few hours and the only score that is important is beating your friend.

This is why OKC does not get high end retail. the disposable, income and/or attitudes towards spending on items that are not necessities is not there. OKC is not a big golf city, weather to variable and relatively small population of people with the money golf requires.

Yeah, the in-house real estate attorneys for DSG do not play.

Decent enough company, but would be a very tough tenant to have on your rent rolls.
