View Full Version : Oklahoma Earthquakes 2011
venture 02-19-2011, 12:43 AM Yet another thread coming back from the depths. :-)
2010 finished out a pretty active year with with well over 200 earthquakes in the state, including the 2nd strongest in recorded history on October 13th of a 4.7 magnitude in the Norman/Noble area.
The Oklahoma Geological Survey has been updating their website with a ton of new features. http://www.okgeosurvey1.gov/
One of the best pages is the Recent Earthquake report: http://www.okgeosurvey1.gov/pages/earthquakes/recent-earthquakes.php
This map is updated with all earthquakes recording by the monitoring sites in Oklahoma, and most of these quakes do not register on the USGS site.
Also added is the catalogs page that has documented all (recorded) earthquakes in Oklahoma since 1897, even though most monitoring didn't start until about 50 years ago. http://www.okgeosurvey1.gov/pages/earthquakes/catalogs.php

That is defiantly up from our average of 50 with only around 2 reported as felt per year.
Thunder 02-19-2011, 02:44 AM David, thank you for taking the time to lay this all out for us. We really appreciate for all that you have done on here. The resources and insight you provide is very much appreciated. Thank you!
venture 02-21-2011, 07:03 PM Arkansas continues to experience a pretty consistent earthquake swarm. Here is a story from USGS on it:
http://www.usgs.gov/newsroom/article.asp?ID=2706&from=rss_home
Not Oklahoma, but definitely in our neighborhood. Of course the big news tonight is the major earthquakes out in the South Pacific, especially the major one in Christchurch, NZ.

The earthquake wasn't too kind to some historic structures. I wonder if they just have to demolish them.
venture 03-11-2011, 10:20 AM Little jolt this morning for people on the east side. This is the first 3.0+ magnitude tremor we've had since mid-January.

Lol yeah. First thing I did was check the twitter feeds and there were a few reports to confirm what I had felt. Like any good scientist, I submitted a "did you feel it?" report to the USGS. What do they use this data for anyways?
Thunder 10-18-2011, 12:14 AM Venture, do you have a map graphing out all the quakes over the past few years toward now? I'd like to see a line graph connecting location to location to location and see what pattern is there. And compare to known fault lines and newly discovered fault lines. And at what depth underneath Oklahoma is the start of the magma chambers?

venture 10-18-2011, 12:30 AM Looking at the OGS site, they are placing the 2.9 tremor in Midwest City, not way out east like the USGS site. Looks like just along Reno between Midwest Blvd and Air Depot.
Does the red star represent where the tremor occurred?
venture 10-18-2011, 12:35 AM Does the red star represent where the tremor occurred?
Yes...at least according to USGS. OGS has it in Midwest City instead.
Yes...at least according to USGS. OGS has it in Midwest City instead.
Yeah, cause past Shawnee seems like a ways off for such a small earthquake to be felt all the way in Del City/Midwest City.

clefeb 10-28-2011, 12:59 AM You're not crazy! I live in MWC and I felt it, my whole house shook! I felt the one on Tuesday as well. I called the PD to see if they had gotten any other calls and she said about 40 others so far.

But you do love me. One more year then we go elope! :-D
silvergrove 10-28-2011, 12:24 PM To let you know, there was a 2nd one last night. The 2nd one was 3.5 magnitude.
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsus/Quakes/usb0006fgu.php
That makes about three ~3 magnitude earthquakes in the same area in the last few weeks.
Thunder 10-28-2011, 12:34 PM I didn't feel the second one.
ljbab728 10-28-2011, 09:18 PM Actually, if you look at this it shows several last night. The only ones that had a magnitude indicating large enough to be felt were at 6:24AM and at 9:18AM and were centered in the Spencer area. The others were mostly under magnitude 2 and would it would be very unsual for them to be felt.

SOONER8693 11-05-2011, 01:19 AM Just had a STRONG earthquake here in far SW OKC. Strongest I've ever felt. Lasted about 25-30 seconds.
venture 11-05-2011, 01:19 AM Rumble rumble.
jbkrems 11-05-2011, 01:21 AM I felt something up here in OKC/Edmond, too. I've never felt an earthquake, but my 2nd floor apt was shaking.
venture 11-05-2011, 01:22 AM Still trying to get information on the earthquake we just had. OGS is down and nothing on USGS just yet.
adaniel 11-05-2011, 01:23 AM I knew I wasn't the only one to feel that. It was strong enough to wake me up here in Midtown. A bit scary since I'm in the third floor of an old building.

Dustin 11-05-2011, 01:28 AM I felt it in N OKC.
It took me a while to realize that was an earthquake. It sounded like someone opened a door in the house and a bunch of air rushed in and made the walls creak and crack. The ground only shook a little bit.
That was a first for me!

So, there were two quakes over 4.0 fifteen minutes apart?

silvergrove 11-05-2011, 02:37 AM Venture, do you think this recent 4.7 relieved most of the stress that may have accumulated in that region or is it more to come?? From what I read about the Meers fault line (in no relation to the earthquakes around here), there was a potential big one several thousand years ago. It was estimated to be at least 7 or 8 magnitude. Think this may be a similar intracontinental fault area?

It is pretty late, so my mind isn't quite with it. I want to say this is the same fault line that we had the 4.6 (or whatever it was finalized at) about a year ago. If that is that case, could estimate that we are going to see this remain pretty common to have the hundreds of smaller 3.0 or less quakes every year. Then once a year or so have a large 4.0 or higher that comes around. Of course, I'm not the expert when it comes to this. We could very well see this take care of things for awhile or it could build us stress elsewhere on the fault.

Preliminary Earthquake Report, November 5, 2011
Contacts: Austin Holland or Amie Gibson, Oklahoma Geological Survey, (Email Us)
On November 5, 2011 at 2:12 AM CDT (07:12:45.4 UTC) an earthquake occurred in Lincoln County, Oklahoma. The earthquake occurred about 6 miles northwest of Prague and 5.2 miles southeast of Sparks. The OGS determined a ML magnitude of 4.8 and the USGS currently has it at a magnitude 4.7 (Mb) these two numbers are essentially the same given the errors in calculating magnitude. Both the USGS and the OGS have determined a magnitude 5.2 mbLg for this event. This earthquake occurred very close to where a magnitude 4.3 earthquake occurred on February 27, 2010. From the location of the earthquake and the focal mechanism it is most likely that this earthquake occurred on the Wilzetta fault also known as the Seminole uplift. As of 3:30 AM CDT on 11/5/11 the OGS has received a few hundred reports.
We will be updating this page as we get more information so please check back.

Thunder 11-05-2011, 07:13 AM Lovely morning!
bombermwc 11-05-2011, 08:03 AM I think there was one last night around 230am. I woke up to my house making a creaking noise and i could feel my bed shake a bit. It's not showing up on the geological survery site, but I felt it. So i'm wondering if they don't update in real time or if they didn't detect it. If they didn't detect it then they need to check their equipment.
