View Full Version : Oklahoma Earthquakes 2011
dmoor82 11-06-2011, 06:49 PM Thunder.....
Oh, never mind. You wouldn't understand your lack of decorum and penchant for inappropriate remarks.
Ohh,thats just our Thunder! He's like Mike from the Chex commercials!
dmoor82 11-06-2011, 06:50 PM I heard that small to medium size tremors/quakes are allright because they release pent up stress on the fault lines. Is that true?
SkyWestOKC 11-06-2011, 06:53 PM What?
Hopefully you mean a $10.00 off coupon in the mail and not a 10.0 earthquake. If my math is correct, a 10.0 is 25,118 times more powerful than the 5.6 we just had.
venture 11-06-2011, 07:03 PM I heard that small to medium size tremors/quakes are allright because they release pent up stress on the fault lines. Is that true?
That is the general thinking, but they can cause more issues too.
However, if we look at what happened here. We had relative quiet...then the 4.7. Few after shocks and then nothing after 9AM Saturday. Then the 5.6. We've been having continuous aftershocks now so that should keep another strong quake from happening - hopefully.
dmoor82 11-06-2011, 07:04 PM At the time of the quake radar picked up Millions of bugs and birds taking flight!

Jim Kyle 11-06-2011, 07:07 PM If my math is correct, a 10.0 is 25,118 times more powerful than the 5.6 we just had.More to the point, I suspect, is that it would be more than 100 times as powerful as the 1989 World Series quake that took out part of the San Francisco Bay Bridge... I'm not certain that one that big has ever been recorded.
dmoor82 11-06-2011, 07:11 PM I bet there are some West coasters out there laughing at us?But these people have to realize were in.....Oklahoma,it doesnt happen to often and this 5.6 has never happened here before yesterday!
JayhawkTransplant 11-06-2011, 07:12 PM No, there hasn't.
And I'm confident in saying that Thunder is the only one here who thinks it would be cool for all of our lives to be literally crushed on Christmas Day.
soonerguru 11-06-2011, 07:17 PM 5.6 is nothing to sneeze at. And I doubt West Coasters are laughing at us, because a 5.6 would cause them great anxiety. As far as earthquakes are concerned, a 5.6 is considered a moderate quake -- but a 6.0 is consider a major earthquake. That says we were very close to experiencing a major earthquake last night.
I looked it up and a 5.6 in Australia in 1989 killed 14 people and damaged something like 50,000 buildings. A 5.6 is nothing to take lightly.
dmoor82 11-06-2011, 07:20 PM Have any of you seen all these spoof quake videos on youtube? There is tons of them.
dmoor82 11-06-2011, 07:22 PM More to the point, I suspect, is that it would be more than 100 times as powerful as the 1989 World Series quake that took out part of the San Francisco Bay Bridge... I'm not certain that one that big has ever been recorded.
Is all of California's buildings and highways built to earthquake standards?Imagine if a major quake hit Oklahoma with no building standards!
OSUMom 11-06-2011, 07:40 PM Think about the shape I-40 is in and then think about being on the crosstown when an earthquake hits. *shudder*
Jim Kyle 11-06-2011, 07:42 PM No, since some of their infrastructure was built before the current standards were established. Many of those killed in Oakland in 1989 were on a freeway that had not yet been updated to the standards.
And we do have building standards, although they're not specifically concerned with quake resistance since wind damage is much more likely in these parts.
Incidentally I was wrong about 10.0 being 100 times as powerful as the 1989 quake. That one was only 6.9, so the 10.0 would be more than 1000 times as powerful! And the strongest ever recorded was a 9.5, according to wikipedia.
Thunder 11-06-2011, 10:03 PM Up on the housetop reindeer falls
Out come rollin' Santa Claus
Down through the chimney with lots of rumble
All through the shakiest magnitude
Ho, ho ho! Who wouldn't roll? Ho, ho ho! Who wouldn't roll?
Up on the housetop, shake, shake, shake
Down through the chimney with Shaken Nick
First comes the stocking of little Nell
Oh, dear Santa fill it well
Give her a dolly that shouts EARTHQUAKE!
One that will open and shut her legs
Ho, ho ho! Who wouldn't roll? Ho, ho ho! Who wouldn't roll?
Up on the housetop, shake, shake, shake,
Down through the chimney with Shaken Nick
Next comes the stocking of little Will
Oh, just see what a glorious fill
Here is an Earthquake Survival Kit
Also a semisgraph recording hits
Ho, ho ho! Who wouldn't roll? Ho, ho ho! Who wouldn't roll?
Up on the housetop, shake, shake, shake
Down through the chimney with Shaken Nick
venture 11-06-2011, 10:42 PM Anyway. Aftershocks are continuing on a pretty regular basis now. They seem to be pretty weak for now and short in duration. I would have to guess that with these going on, the risk of another moderate quake is going down some. Still can happen, but less likely now. We'll have to watch it.
Those that were a bit rattled last night should be able to get a good nights sleep today. Especially with the rain moving in and cool temps.
ljbab728 11-06-2011, 11:49 PM This summary is an interesting assessment of this event and Oklahoma activity in general by the USGS.

bandnerd 11-07-2011, 05:23 AM So, basically, what Thunder wants is a combination of Day After Tomorrow and 2012, on Christmas Day. Klassy.
Roadhawg 11-07-2011, 12:12 PM This is cool... NOAA Radar Shows Birds, Bugs Flying During Quake

ljbab728 11-07-2011, 07:48 PM Another aftershock. This is the first one I've felt.
Thunder 11-07-2011, 07:48 PM WOW Did anyone just feel that?!
dmoor82 11-07-2011, 07:48 PM Just felt a small quake here in dt!
Martin 11-07-2011, 07:48 PM here we go again... -M
OSUMom 11-07-2011, 07:48 PM Did we just have another one?
HewenttoJared 11-07-2011, 07:49 PM Yep.
Earthquake during a thunderstorm!
Bellaboo 11-07-2011, 07:49 PM I felt it here in Yukon....
Dustin 11-07-2011, 07:49 PM Yup, felt that one too! Mom thought it was thunder and so did dad but the ground definitely shook back and forth...
I'm becoming use to these.
OSUMom 11-07-2011, 07:50 PM My daughter felt it in Stillwater.
adaniel 11-07-2011, 07:51 PM Felt it in midtown...this is getting old.
jn1780 11-07-2011, 07:52 PM That was a lot bigger than a normal aftershock. They had been getting smaller.
Jim Kyle 11-07-2011, 07:52 PM Yep, it was a very brief shock in far NW OKC and very little noise. At first I thought it was a downburst wind gust but it did shake the whole house a bit.
Achilleslastand 11-07-2011, 07:52 PM Felt it here in NW Okc at about 847pm.
MikeOKC 11-07-2011, 07:53 PM USGS says these are not technically "aftershocks." That one shook things pretty good, too.
Felt it in Surry Hills (far NW OKC). Felt my recliner shake.
Bunty 11-07-2011, 07:54 PM Yep.
Earthquake during a thunderstorm!
Yeah, it was no sudden gust of wind.
SkyWestOKC 11-07-2011, 07:55 PM That was big. Probably not an aftershock
silvergrove 11-07-2011, 07:55 PM What's the estimate for the magnitude of this one?
nik4411 11-07-2011, 07:55 PM yea that one shook my apartment pretty good. interested in what it registered. i'm here at 63rd and may.
ctchandler 11-07-2011, 07:56 PM I am near North East 122nd and Air Depot, and it was pretty strong.
C. T.
Ginkasa 11-07-2011, 07:56 PM 4.7 if I'm looking at the right thing...
Is this it? (http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/recenteqsus/Quakes/usb0006lpf.php)

MikeOKC 11-07-2011, 07:57 PM delete - same info as Venture posted at the same time.
adaniel 11-07-2011, 07:57 PM Honestly didn't feel as strong as the one on Saturday night but nonetheless big. 4.5-50 is my best guess.
EDIT: My post came in after it was already determined what it was. But it seems that I'm getting pretty good at this lol!
Honestly didn't feel as strong as the one on Saturday night but nonetheless big. 4.5-50 is my best guess.
Correct.
MikeOKC 11-07-2011, 07:59 PM 4.7 - see above. Which means 3 out of the 4 strongest quakes in Oklahoma history (recorded) have all been in the past 3 days. Very bizarre.
cfeken 11-07-2011, 08:06 PM Iam sick of this!!!!!
MikeOKC 11-07-2011, 08:06 PM Wow....from the AP.....
"The magnitude-5.6 quake that rocked Oklahoma 5km underground had the power of 3,800 tons of TNT, which is nearly 2,000 times stronger than the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing, which ruined a federal building and damaged several others."
http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/TechandScience/Story/STIStory_731665.html
I kind of like them. It's exciting at this magnitude. Any stronger probably not so much.
Bellaboo 11-07-2011, 08:09 PM We'll really be sick of them when we start having structural damage.
Snowman 11-07-2011, 08:10 PM Honestly didn't feel as strong as the one on Saturday night but nonetheless big. 4.5-50 is my best guess.
Now I can see how I missed the one Saturday morning, I was sitting in the same chair, the chair hardly moved and their was no noise from the house. If it were not for being more cognizant of a short shaking sensation I might have passed it off as something else.
Let's see, today we've had thunderstorms, hail, tornadoes, and earthquakes. Cue the swarms of locusts...
venture 11-07-2011, 08:10 PM I kind of like them. It's exciting at this magnitude. Any stronger probably not so much.
We are going to start expecting them every evening.
jn1780 11-07-2011, 08:11 PM 4.7 - see above. Which means 3 out of the 4 strongest quakes in Oklahoma history (recorded) have all been in the past 3 days. Very bizarre.
Yeah, tonight's earth quake would have been significant to us though if it wasn't for Saturday's earthquake.
venture 11-07-2011, 08:11 PM We are in the chat room tonight FYI...covering the weather. LOL - http://www.storm-scope.com/chat.html
ljbab728 11-07-2011, 08:11 PM I kind of like them. It's exciting at this magnitude. Any stronger probably not so much.
The people with severly damaged homes probably think it was strong enough.
MikeOKC 11-07-2011, 08:12 PM Now I can see how I missed the one Saturday, I was sitting in the same chair, my chair hardly moved and their was no noise from the house. If it were not for being more cognizant of a short shaking sensation I might have passed it off as something else.
The 5.6 felt much stronger here. Somebody want to do the math on how much stronger a 5.6 is than a 4.7?
dmoor82 11-07-2011, 08:12 PM For comparison http://apple.copydesk.org/uploads/2011/03/110312QuakeGraphicCedarRapids.jpg
Snowman 11-07-2011, 08:13 PM The 5.6 felt much stronger here. Somebody want to do the math on how much stronger a 5.6 is than a 4.7?
I meant in the morning one, that was also 4.7, I clearly felt the 5.6 one. It is roughly 8-9 times as strong.
Jim Kyle 11-07-2011, 08:14 PM It's roughly 8 times stronger.
EDIT: The math is simple. The two ratings differ by 0.9 and each increment of 0.3 is a 2X increase or decrease. 0.6 would be 4x and 0.9 is 8X. These are log values, and adding logs is the same as multiplying ordinary numbers.
dmoor82 11-07-2011, 08:18 PM That chart I posted above shows even our 5.6 doesnt even happen Worldwide that often annualy!
