Work started yesterday (2/15/11) on a contract for 640 days to upgrade the Morgan road entrances/exits to a single point interchange.

Project highlights

New entrance/exit ramps, will be longer with more gradual curves, none are cloverleafs
Only one set of stoplights, it will be on the bridge and you only hit it if you are turning left from the exit or going over i40
Business entrances south of the entrance/exit are being adjusted so they will not be the issue they are now
Also doing rehabilitation work on all lanes of i40 for one mile in both directions from the bridge
Widening Morgan to six lanes between SW 8th and Reno

This is good to know. The owners of the business I work for use that crossing over I-40 a lot. Guess it's time to let them know that they'll want to find an alternate route here in 2 more months! It will be most interesting when it's all built. For those that want a better image and understanding of this kind of interchange:

Single Point Interchange (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Single_Point_Interchange)

Where's the closest one to us? Dallas? Denver? It's definitely pretty interesting.

Long needed and long overdue. Will without a doubt be a traffic nightmare but the end result will be worth the headaches.

Another traffic nightmare coming to the area, (if no changes to the schedule) shortly after they finish Morgan, the will be widening i40 between the turnpike and where they already have widened it to 6 lanes west of Garth Brooks boulevard.

Look like highway construction is the job to have, definately has long term employment possibilities.

Yeah traffic is backed up all the way past MacArthur because of the construction during 5 o'clock traffic......

One that I know of for sure that's fairly close is in Metro KC...Near the border of Lenexa and Overland Park at I-35 and W. 87th St Parkway.

Single point interchanges are planned for the I-35 and Main Street exits in Norman.

Great news...living just 2 miles south of this exit, I tend to avoid it at all costs and take Council up to 40 instead. We were once pumping gas at a station there and a Californian was going off about how stupid the interchange was.

Californians should know about stupid interchanges. They certainly have plenty of them. LOL

Looks like they may be setting up to change the entry and exit to go on to the new west side ramps and moving exiting & entering paths on the renovated lanes on both sides of the bridge.

We could only hope so......that is a very difficult construction area to pass through on a regular basis.

Are they putting up temporary stop signs on Morgan road for traffic control ?

Somehow I manage to. In the right lane people are constantly stopping because everyone who is exiting has to slow down to take that curve without flipping. I just get in the left lane and stay there. :Smiley199

Just noticed this. Great news down the line but I feel for the commuters and businesses that will have to deal with it.

Glad to read in the article that I-40 will be resurfaced from basically the bridge to the east to Sarah Road to the west. That stretch of I-40 was as bad as the portion between El Reno and Yukon.

Also great to hear that they are leaving enough room for four lanes of traffic in each direction. This would help save on expansion costs and time in the future.

There is also some fancy design that will be on the overpass. It looks like horses or something will be on the overpass as you look from I-40.

It's galloping horses. About 20 of them.

Nice!! I think they should refer to them as galloping Mustangs.

As much as I've kept up with this project I've never read that article and that was one of the first articles on it and Snowman even has it in his first post. Thank you OKCNDN.

Snip-it from ODOT updates had some language on the upcoming shift

I-40 ramps open/ Morgan Rd. traffic shifts Monday as project continues through summer
The new I-40 on and off-ramps at Morgan Rd. will be opened and east and westbound traffic on Morgan Rd. will be shifted to a portion of the new bridge around noon on Monday as the I-40/Morgan Rd. reconstruction project continues. The right lanes of east and westbound I-40 and westbound I-40 will remain closed between Council Rd. and Sara Rd. until summer 2012.

Today, they have moved the entrance and exit ramps to Morgan rd for both east and west bound traffic. It's much better not having to slow down for those getting off and on right under the bridge.

I blew through there at 60 mph at a qtr of 5:00 today. It flowed very good as opposed to what it has been. Got stuck there last friday for 30 minutes due to a wreck.

I have yet to drive this stretch since they opened that up because I've been gone but that is great news for me because I drive this stretch all the time and it has been a pain lately.

I am super glad that the new configuration will have three lanes that continue on the other side of the overpass. Previously the outside lane would be an exit and that lane would stop there. I saw many cars that would have to move over at the last second to continue on I-40. Not good.

The 3 lanes will continue to the other side of Garth Brooks, when complete. Supposed to let contracts for the road from just east of the Kilpatrick to just past GB Blvd in 2014.

That will take the 3 lanes to just shy of El Reno.

I know the question was asked back in February, but there are alot of SPUI's in St. Louis and Pheonix.

And to give you something more to chew on, the plan for the I-35/SH-9 west interchange is for a diverging diamond interchange (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diverging_diamond_interchange).
