you don't mess around with MEG

I know this is a stupid question but don't you have to live in the ward in which you run for office?

If so, where does Cliff Hearron live? I couldn't find anything in Ward 8 under his name. Perhaps he rents?

No clue where he lives, but there are a few other ways to stay off the radar other than renting.

Just a word of caution about Meg's vote ... we don't know which precincts are reporting. She'll do very well north of the river (perhaps excepting Gatewood where VanManen lives) but south of the river, in Capitol Hill, may be a different story ... glad she got the endorsements of the Latino newspapers, though ... still waiting for more returns ...

I dunno Doug. maybe I'll end up eating Crow, but if I were callin' races tonight, I'd go ahead and call it for Done! for Salyer and Ryan, and a run-off for Shadid and Swinton.
Not enough precincts in for me to wanna try and call it Done for either Greenwall or Walters.

Salyer and Ryan have won easily.

Based on outstanding precincts, Swinton should win relatively handily. (EDIT: Should clarify, he will handily come in first...may not avoid runoff)

Walters will be neck and neck, but if Greenwell pulls away soon by 20 points in the next five reporting, he will have it.

It warms my heart to see the Windsor Hills boys going down in flames. If Greenwell can take out Walters, I'll consider it a great night.

I'm confuzzled why the Ward 5 results at newsok are not updating. Surely they've cleared more than 4 of the precincts by now

Doug Loudenback

You'd think. Just checked again at 8:22 and no status change for any of the races. What a paltry number of voters went to the polls.

I canvassed for Salyer this weekend, and she is far and away the best candidate in her ward. She is such a genuine and brilliant person; I hope the results hold.

I didn't get the calculator out, but I think as the results stand now, you'd have to have higher than average turnout in the remaining precincts, and all of it go to VanManen for him to win.

Ward 5 just updated. Still neck and neck, even closer actually

774 to 756 greenwall over walters; 14 precincts of 29 reporting

added at 8:30ish going out on a limb, calling it Walters by a nose and heading off to find some dinner since the other races seem locked fairly tight
(won't cry if I'm wrong, but in neck to neck, it's hard not to go with the incumbent )

It's funny when all this started... Most people had to be thinking, "As much as we like to think we've progressed in this town, we're still vulnerable to the small-minded dragging us down".

Then tonight you realize the city as a whole HAS really progressed in lots of different ways. Especially in the leadership -- both political and otherwise -- but it also goes to show how much the attitude of the general citizenry has changed, too.

I've felt that change and switch in attitudes every time I've come to visit and I'm glad to see it underscored in tonight's elections.

Credit the voters at the grass roots level to be able to see through the rhetoric. Now, if the city were to force the fire union's wage argument and take it to the people for a resounding defeat, well, that would be icing on the cake.

Great night all the way around!!!

In the Shadid-Swinton runoff to come, what's the big difference? I know I've been getting a huge number of direct mail pieces from Swinton. Everything I've read seems good. Is there something about Swinton I should know? Anything special about Shadid?

I agree with a lot of what the FOP and IAFF are saying.

I also have had enough face-to-face time with Chamber people to know many of them profoundly believe the city exists to serve the Chamber, and not vice versa. I was opposed to the Ford Center expansion, as you all know. I supported MAPS 3, but I remain suspicious of the way it was structured.

But the choice I was given in this election was between a kind of safe, bland establishment incumbent and a religious tea party fruitbat who ran on a platform of – well, what, exactly? 'Don't tread on me?' That the Tower of Babel was the first MAPS project? That the incumbent doesn't state a church affiliation in her campaign literature?

What a &#$@%*$ pathetic choice!

As a reform-minded citizen, I feel that I really had no choice at all in this election.

I saw Shadid speak when Ralph Nader was in town. I was very impressed. He is intelligent and his heart is definitely in the right place. I definitely would like to know more about what he plans to do at the municipal level as compared to Swinton, but Shadid seems to be a solid character.

Aside from what little I read in the Gazette & Oklahoman, I've not paid serious attention to Ward 2. I would not be surprised if there aren't some interviews by Gwin Faulconer-Lipprert Show at KTOK, though.

Charlie Swinton is a man of character, who as a banker, has seen this city go through the ups and downs of the boom and bust of the past few decades. He stuck around OKC because he believes in progress and sound fiscal government. He wants to see MAPS 3 to completion and is a ardent supporter of public safety. He served the 911 election in December 2005 as treasurer, and that campaign generated an overwhelming (near) 80 percent approval rate in the MSA.

I got a Janis Powers brochure in the mail that seemed to indicate she was endorsed by Sam Bowman. If that's true, it didn't help her a bit. I no longer have it or I would double check. My wife and I both thought, from that piece, that Bowman had endorsed her.

From everything I read about her, I thought she was a reasonable choice. But, she didn't seem to go out of her way to get her views out there. Maybe there were financial reasons, as it appears she didn't generate much in the way of contributions. She's not in my ward, but I would have liked to know more about her.

Greenwell is a good second choice to Walters, but if Shadid doesn't get elected........congratulations, the Mayor and CM will have a rubber stamp to do whatever he wants. Our bridges were burnt when Schwartz left and we've been treading water ever since with a single vote on the shoe to be a watchdog for PS. But we plan on staying around for a long time, whether you like us not. And ever so vocal as well, to say "we told you so, Again". As I said earlier; we won before the first ballot was ever cast.

Congratulations to the winners.
