The city of Norman has just installed LED street lighting in my neighborhood and it is clearly not as effective at lighting the streets.

It does a good job of lighting near the light pole but the street between the light poles is far darker.
The drive ways and front yards are also far darker and that has caused some concerns about crime & safety.
Because it is so dark people who have never turned on their porch lights on are now doing so.
So much for saving electricity and the environment.:headscrat

OKC already has them on SW 15th behind the Dell call center area to Meridian.

I have seen the ones they are testing on Portland at night and they are very bright. They save energy and last longer, which is a good thing.

I think they look kinda cool. I think they would be great on trails but i dot know how much i would like them next to a street.

I agree that they are interesting in an area like that. I don't think I would like them in an urban setting though.

Wonder if something like this is available for the home/property owner market. This would work great at my cabin and boat dock where the cost to run power is almost prohibitive.

Looks like that one is a little pricey (http://www.harborgreenstore.com/products/Sanya-Hybrid-Wind-%26-Solar-Street-Lamp.html), but I was able to find a few different ones (http://www.google.com/#sclient=psy&hl=en&biw=1024&bih=677&tbs=shop:1&q=hybrid+street+light&aq=f&aqi=&aql=&oq=&pbx=1&fp=7ae27570a9208bce) that are a bit cheaper.

That looks much better for a modern urban setting.

These hybrid streetlights use wind & solar to charge batteries to power LED lamps. They look stupid, require ridiculous amounts of maintenance, and should only be used where there is no available electricity. They’d be wonderful for a backwoods cabin, but NOT a city.

The few LED streetlights along the south edge of SW 15th (between Portland & Meridian) were provided as samples by some sign company in an attempt to sell the City. They have terrible photometrics, and shine right in driver’s eyes. They’re junk. Hopefully the City will recognize this and reject them.

The Project 180 streetlights are a different sort of ‘hybrid.’ They use halogen lamps to light the street surface, and separate arms with LED lamps to light pedestrian surfaces. They have excellent photometrics, and look very cool! (and they use plain, old-fashioned electricity)

I actually don't mind the look of the first ones, but I really like the ones going in downtown.
