Hi Everyone.

I think it might be time to create a thread that captures all of the press that our fine city is generating. Please used this thread to capture all press releases involving Oklahoma City and it's Renaissance.

With this thread, we can have a ready archive of articles, films, and reports of our city's progress and what the press has reported.

Enjoy!

I'll go ahead and begin with a video I found from Corpus Christi, TX. Their city leadership took a CoC trip to Oklahoma City in October 2010 to learn about OKC's Renaissance and determine if there could be takeaways that they could apply to their city.

Here is the newsprint article from Topeka, where their city leaders came to OKC to get ideas on revitalizing their downtown. I had posted this before, but am archiving it here in the Oklahoma City in the Press mega-thread.

Thanks for that video link, Hot Rod. Since I was a kid, Corpus has been my most favorite place to be. My ashes will probably be in the Gulf off of Padre Island some day. I love that area and if I weren't living here, that would be my choice of places to live.

OKC ranked #2 in private sector job growth (by percent growth; #9 in raw growth) among the 100 largest markets from Sept. 2009 to Sept. 2010. Initially I said that I just tried the link and it worked ... but I mistakenly went to the Topeka link which has no video. I'm having the same problem with the Corpus link you described. I'll see if I can located it another way because it's a very nice video.

On edit: the tv station's home page is http://www.kiiitv.com/ but when going there and searching for Oklahoma City nothing about the group of Corpus business and officials visit to Okc turned up. It doesn't look like the station keeps a very big archive of such things.

Doug, Im not sure what their deal is. I too tried to find it and did a Bing Search with the exact title - the link came up but it didn't work. Maybe they are doing mtc or maybe the tv station doesn't keep stories too long. Considering the even just took place a month ago, I find this a little difficult to believe, however.

Maybe is somebody has time to write the station to inquire about the story or get them to host it on Youtube. The title was "Corpus Christi Leaders travel to Oklahoma City", and it does show up in the search engines but the link at the station is dead.

well, I said mega thread because the topic is a continuous one, whereas most threads just drop off after the topic loses steam or interest.

I would expect this 'mega' thread should keep going and going, but if not a sticky it might get buried and maybe not found if people don't post media releases into it. We've all posted one liner threads before with press releases, and they came and went. I hope this one is always here, always front - so that all media releases could be in one place, and archived. So we all can be proud of OKC's accomplishments (and learn from legitimate/constructive criticisms) and have a single place to review.

Quote: And in the coming decades, as more people move in and open restaurants, museums, and sports arenas, who’s to say Oklahoma City can’t be Oz?

Quote: And Oklahoma City—which enjoys low unemployment as a result of its steadily growing energy and aerospace sectors—has been ranked among the best job markets for young people, ahead of Dallas, Seattle, and even New York (having Kevin Durant lead the NBA’s Oklahoma City Thunder for the foreseeable future can only improve the buzz).

That is an awesome article. OKC is truly positioned to become one of the "go to" cities within the next 20 years. I cannot remember a time when all elements of growth (public & private parterships/investment)are converging in the city, and the comment about KD is priceless. Anyone who thinks the NBA and KD have not brought positive new images of OKC is simply not paying attention

I commend your initiative with this thread, but I think your idea is better suited for a blog, not a forum. Usually each thread here is one topic and what you intend to do here is a multi-topic thread. As people discuss the different news/posts, the thread will get so "mega" that the initial stories will get lost and hard to find if you want to go back to them. Moreover, if people discuss different news/topics it would be a mess to follow. An idea would be to have a sticky thread with no discussions, just the the press release information and a link to a different thread where that particular topic is being discussed. That way you can always go back to the sticky to find the topic you want to discuss or just check it out. Hope that made sense.

but i do agree (and originally intend) that this mega thread be a sticky location for posts/links to stories so people could have a ready archive of the success (and failures) of OKC's progress. Links in this megathread would have just a short executive summary description only -

Discussions of specific topics or reactions to them could take place in individual threads like they already are.

I agree with Hot Rod, this thread can basicaly never die because there is always something in the news about OKC almost every week and sometimes more than that!Remember in this thread you can post anything about OKC in the Natl. news either good or bad!

A particular News post takes 2 or 3 pages of discussion. If there are several stories in between, it will be a mess to follow any discussion.

Assuming this is a clean thread stuck at the top of the forum, and although it may take a few more steps, here is an idea:

1) Change the Title of the post (not the thread) to the news story.
2) Place a link to the news story and the thread to follow the discussion.

Example:

1) Title: Oklahoma City ranks #2 in private job growth!

2) Body of the post:

Oklahoma City ranks second in private job growth
OKCBiz Staff
11.16.2010

Oklahoma City boasted the second-highest percentage gain in private job growth among the nation’s 100 largest metros in 2010, according to The Bureau of Labor Statistics of the US Department of Labor.

He has done things that I certainly don't agree with, but not sure how he (Cornett) is dishonoring the city charter in this instance. They are correct, he IS a Republican (but not the Republican mayor, just the mayor that happens to be a Republican). His party affiliation isn't exactly a secret either (he was scheduled to speak at the Republican convention but got bumped). What is he supposed to do when it comes up, embarrass the host of the program and correct them every time?

It is an article of faith among our cultural arbiters that mayors of great American cities have a political affiliation, and that affiliation is Democratic, except in the case of New York, where it's "indistinguishable from Democratic"; a Republican mayor in a top-30 (okay, top-31) city is newsworthy in the man-bites-dog sense.

A mayor in Oklahoma City cannot campaign or serve under a partisan label. It is a nonpartisan seat. He can be registered as a Republican, but every national publication and media outlet has him SERVING as a Republican mayor in what they think is a partisan office.

He is doing great things for the city. He is one of the best mayors in our city's history. But the nonpartisan office of mayor is something I always admired and is now lost in our history. Too bad no one else can see it that way thanks to the partisan v-chip shoved in everyone's heads.

Nonetheless, awesome interview and speaks volumes for our city's image. I am glad to have Mick serving another term.
