Let's do a photography meet up downtown one of these days. Just a bunch of us get together, scan the network of streets taking pics and having a good time..urbanist-style. It would be cool to compare pics afterward and post them on the forums as well.

Anyone down?

I'd be happy to participate but I really can't do much walking ... so I drive from spot to spot. Sounds like a good idea.

All right Spartan, I nominate you to be in charge and coordinate.

Spartan

Sounds good. Are there any events Saturday evening? So far I can't think of anything I've told anyone else I'll be at, so I might be down for that if everyone else is. Saturday evening downtown will have people, and that might be a time that's good for everyone else?

So far I've got:

And someone should really get on making something for Doug to sit in so we can have him come, too.

Doug Loudenback
05-12-2010, 07:35 PM
Well, even if I don't get my sidebar bathtub, I can still come ... drive a bit .. and still take pictures. I've been doing that for quite sometime and, if push comes to shove, I guess that I can get along without the bathtub.

I've not seen a post which coordinates (1) meeting place and time and (2) how we might be breaking down into areas of engagement/photography. So, if this endeavor is serious, it seems to me that you, Spartan, are the natural camera person to make that call. Some prior meeting and/or e-mails might want to address and assign areas to which each would cover and, initially, it might just be good for all of us to meet and have a beer somewhere in Bricktown (assuming that all are of legal drinking age) to have a chat and coordinate what each of us would be doing.

So .... Spartan ... give the ground rules and let's get on with this.

Not sure if I can make this Saturday with a late notice, but if I can arrange it I will be there. If not, I'm getting better at being able to get out and shoot pics/vids. Any big events at the Ford Center coming up in the next week or two?

Kerry
05-13-2010, 09:13 AM
Might I suggest a Friday evening photo session followed up by an early Saturday morning session. This will give two options for people to meet and will keep you out of the daytime heat and harsh lighting. You can get some good night/early evening shots and then come back during the day for some daylight shots.

You guys may want to check the weather too. Looks like rain all through the weekend, also the pics wouldn't look as good with cloudy skies in the background.

Why not a Thursday evening starting on the OKCMOA roof during their weekly "Cocktails on the Skyline event? It's a beautiful vantage point, doors open at 5:00, and admission is $5.00. Everyone could meet over a drink, refine the plan, and launch as a group.

Spartan
05-13-2010, 01:52 PM
That's a good idea OKCTalker, and I would be down for that. The problem with a Thursday night is that there's no guarantee that the rest of downtown will have people out and about, and that's really what I want to capture for a change as dmoor suggested--the essence of vitality and activity in DT OKC.

How about this, for next Saturday the 22nd (something came up for me on this sat): Meet up for a late-lunch at Deep Deuce, then go walking for a few hours. I want to cover as much of downtown as possible, but we may have to narrow it down to a few areas along a certain few streets. Can't walk everywhere. After we're finished we can all go over to Cafe do Brazil for drinks if that works. I only just turned 21 and there are still some bars I couldn't get into probably, and I would like A2010 to come as well if he'd like, and he's a bit younger than I..maybe shane too? I'll pm those guys.

Are there any particular sites that everyone would feel strongly about hitting up? I myself just feel strongly about wanting to get on top of a few parking garages. The best view from the worst blights in downtown..lol. But just let me know if anyone has a site they want to hit up. I'll try to put together a walking map closer to the date.

Saturday 22nd has absolutely no events except for Philharmonic doing Tchaikovsky at the Civic Center.

Kerry

Wish I could be there for this.

Spartan
05-13-2010, 02:13 PM
We wish you could too, Kerry. Let me know if you're going to be in town sometime over the summer and we can meet up for lunch or after work drinks somewhere downtown, too.

I just like meeting people, and I prefer being active and face-to-face interaction over Internet boards. I know pretty much everyone is the same way, and maybe it would lead to less flame wars constantly erupting, too.

Well I think what would be really cool is to just stay together like a pack and go all throughout downtown. Because if not, I would fight whoever for Automobile Alley! lol jk

That's awesome EBAH, and I wanna thank everyone who considers coming along with us. It will probably be a lot of fun. The reason I've suggested the evening over the lunch time is just because I want to get pictures with people in them for a change, that AND I honestly don't see myself waking up very early after a Friday night. Saturday evening is probably as convenient a time as we'll get for a meet up.

I'm 51.3% on the 22nd. Keep in mind, you'll never please everyone's schedules, at some point it'll just need to be scheduled if it's going to happen regardless who is there. Too bad we didn't do this during NBA Finals/Arts Festival.

I like the idea of a Downtown OKC Photography club. I recently acquired a Nikon D90 but could really use some pointers on how to use it to take amazing shots. My first DSLR so I'm kind of a newbie. If I was available this Saturday, I'd love to join but I'm out of town.

Alright guys, don't forget that it's THIS Saturday. Let's talk meeting time..I'm thinking sometime around 5 or so. Let's meet on North Broadway, where there's plenty of parallel parking available..in front of the new liquor store on 6th I think (or 5th, 7th, etc).

If we can get all of the confirmed people and half of the maybes to show up that would be AWESOME. Should be really fun.

Here is my top 5 suggested areas for photography (no particular order).
1. Classen Curve area
2. Stockyards City
3. Oklahoma River projects
4. American Indian Cultural Center
5. Plaza District

Spartan
05-19-2010, 02:37 PM
Lee, I don't think we are going to get to any of these. We're talking about walking distance in the downtown core. If you are interested in seeing some good Plaza District photos, however, check out this recent blog post of mine:

A Downtown ontheRange: Friday Night on the Plaza (http://downtownontherange.blogspot.com/2010/05/friday-night-on-plaza.html)

There's a really good blog/site that Mike Knopp does detailing the river projects, and really he's a better source on that stuff than virtually anyone else I know of:
Oklahoma River: A Vision for the Future (http://oklahomariver.blogspot.com/)
Boathouse District Development (http://boathousedistrictdevelopment.blogspot.com/)

Hope that helps.

Probably 4-6ish. Is there a time that works best for you? We haven't nailed down a meeting time yet.

Nick definitely has the right idea on focusing on a small area with multitudes of cameras. The result of this project could be incredible. (For history if nothing else!) A nice day will add a cherry on top. Kudos for putting this together.

That might work, I think the class is over around 4 or 5. Go ahead and do what you all need to do and I'll try my best to make it if I can.

Doug Loudenback
05-19-2010, 06:02 PM
I could participate Saturday afternoon (I'm assuming that the "4-6ish" reference is p.m. and not a.m.) but as I've said I'm not a walker and I don't want to slow anyone else down. And I've not seen the bathtub side-car yet materialize. I could meet with the group at a designated convergence point and then be given an assigned task (i.e., a defined area to cover), and I'd be more than glad to participate in my slow motion way and cover it thoroughly. I'd be glad to have another (others) crip(s) join me, if any there are.

Spartan

Thanks for the kind words, Mike. Sounds good, metro. Doug--I'll put together a walking route of sorts and we'll see if there's a good place for us to meet up near a street and we can put you to good use, Doug.
