Too bad Hertz didn't have their corporate office back in OKC. Could move the jobs to OKC and build/fill another tower DT.

The CEO said the impact on the Tulsa office, which houses 700 of the company’s 6,000 total employees, will not be known for some time. The deal could take six to 12 months to be approved.

Umm duh? Corporate overlap will be reduced = meaning Tulsa people laid off. Dollar and Thrifty will just be another brand operated by Hertz but supported by Hertz people.

Hertz was bought out by an equity fund and moved out of Oklahoma City. As this was going on, virtually everything and anything that could be outsourced was outsourced and virtually any job that could be shipped overseas was shipped overseas. They will more than likely do the same thing to the Tulsa employees. The goal for the equity fund is to make Hertz as profitable and as attractive as possible to general investors so the current owners can shop for a new owner or make a secondary offer on the stock market and roll it out as an independent company. As it is now, roughly 75% of the company is owned by institutions. Considering they were in danger of bankruptcy a year ago, this is a suprise announcement.

I doubt many are laid off but some could move to the corporate HQ in NJ or even to the facility in OKC. Tulsa will most likely still be the operations center for the Dollar Thrifty subsidiary of Hertz. They currently occupy office space in two high-rise towers along the BA Expressway where they have been since 1994.

The management of the company that took over Hertz has no problem eliminating jobs and sending them overseas or outsourcing. There's no reason to think they won't do the same thing with the Dollar/Thrifty employees. Tulsa might as well be Bombay for the folks in New Jersey. If they can save a buck, they will and to **** with the human aspect of it.

Some lovely comments on the Tulsa World article:

The IT people may be able to slide over to Oklahoma City, where Hertz has a big IT center. Beware of the red dirt, sand burrs, short trees and incessant wind.

well, if Hertz thinks they are getting the talent from Tulsa to go to OKC they are badly mistaken. People don't want to go to OKC.

Who says they are moving to Texas? No one knows what will happen. They may decide to keep Tulsa as a regional base for Hertz and relocate the OKC operation here.

Hertz was bought out by an equity fund and moved out of Oklahoma City. Huh? Hertz's IT dept. (NW Exp. and Mac Arthur) and most of their financial and operating depts. (NW 150th between May and Portland) are here in OKC. There were layoffs here and that opened up enough space to bring Tulsa operations of Thrifty/Dollar into existing space here with no problem. I don't see Hertz leaving OKC anytime soon.

Mug, Hertz headquarters was never in OKC, if that's what you mean.

Actually, I thought Metro implied that above in an earlier post and I was thinking, huh?

The "Headquarters" or the "Executive" offices, payroll, HR, marketing and advertising are, and have for some time been in Parsipany N.J. All of the offices doing the day to day business of renting cars and getting paid for same have been, and are still in OKC. A couple of depts. have been outsourced but most depts. have only cut back on employees and those that are left are expected to pick up the extra workload.

Google says around 700 people are employed in the Park Ridge, NJ headquarters. That's actually a pretty large number of employees at a corporate office.

Bottom line: The corporate office, headquarters, whatever, is not, and never has been, located in Oklahoma City.

You are correct. They had only their data center, their reservations center and their financial operations here.

which means the Tulsa people would most likely be offered positions in Oklahoma City.

Hertz did outsource some of their IT operations from NW Exway not long ago. That's not to say that they were offshoared, just contracted out. The actualy Hertz employees were given a severance package that was pretty good. However, they still have a significant IT presense here.

You know what's interesting, we spend all this time talking about big name corporations that have a presense here, but hardly any time on the local companies that emlpoyee even more people locally. We've had a number of deals go through to help bring in outside companies, but not support the grassroots companies here.

I do find it funny that the Tulsa folks could be asked to come here. Although, you know they won't.

Bidding war is starting. Avis in trying to trump Hertz.

Avis to tops Hertz's offer to buy Dollar - May. 3, 2010 (http://money.cnn.com/2010/05/03/autos/avis_outbids_hertz_dollar/index.htm)

Well that's an interesting development. I think it would be better for Oklahoma if it's Hertz, for obvious reasons.

Hertz's IT was outsourced, THEN off-shored. Most of the employees picked up by the outsourcer (IBM), either moved on to other clients or left the company altogether while the employees in Bangladesh were expected to pick up the slack. Needless to say, this failed miserably and Hertz has now re-insourced a significant amount of IT personnel, many of whom were either laid off, or left the company voluntarily. They've got their work cut out for them, but the guys I know there are pretty good and can handle it.

Most of the programmers are still gone, however. To put in in perspective, 1/2 of the Data Center building is literally shut down and empty now. Parkridge, NJ has always been the corporate HQ where the suits are, but all the reservations functions, IT operations, accounting, and administration functions reside in OKC.

You mean better for Oklahoma City (maybe), Avis' operations are in Tulsa, like Hertz is in Oklahoma City.

Avis' operations are in Tulsa, like Hertz is in Oklahoma City.

I wasn't aware of that. I just looked up a Tulsa World article and it indicated that Avis/Budget has a few hundred jobs at a customer service center in Tulsa.
