I just wanted to let everyone know about some of the state's best undergraduate scholars. These 13 OSU students have diligenty pursued their studies, routinely going above and beyond expectation, and they deserve recognition.

The Daily Oklahoman has shown reluctance to give these students the acknowledgement they deserve, so I am taking a more grassroots approach to speading the word. All Oklahomans should be proud of what these students have accomplished. See below for details:

Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship:

The following student is OSU’s 18th Goldwater Scholar:

Lydia Meador

Mrs. Peggy Goldwater Clay, Chair of the Board of Trustees of the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation, announced today that the Trustees awarded 278 scholarships for the 2010–2011 academic year to undergraduate sophomores and juniors from the United States.

The Goldwater Scholars were selected on the basis of academic merit from a field of 1,111 mathematics, science, and engineering students who were nominated by the faculties of colleges and universities nationwide.

The one and two year scholarships will cover the cost of tuition, fees, books, and room and board up to a maximum of $7,500 per year.

Goldwater Scholars have very impressive academic qualifications that have garnered the attention of prestigious post-graduate fellowship programs. Recent Goldwater Scholars have been awarded 73 Rhodes Scholarships, 105 Marshall Awards, 90 Churchill Scholarships (9 of the 14 awarded in the United States in 2010), and numerous other distinguished fellowships.

The Goldwater Scholarship is the premier undergraduate award of its type in these fields.

A 14-member independent review committee selected this year's group of Scholars on the basis of commitment to careers in the environment, health care or tribal public policy; leadership potential; and academic achievement.

This highly qualified class of Udall Scholars was selected from a record 537 candidates nominated by 256 colleges and universities. Seventy Scholars intend to pursue careers related to the environment. Each scholarship provides up to $5,000 for the Scholar’s junior or senior year. This prestigious scholarship has generated 1,155 Udall Scholars since the first awards in 1996.
