JUNKMAN 02-20-2010, 10:25 AM Hey Frisky I can see you are an old theatre buff. Sure is sad to see the lists with almost all stating closed and worse ,demolished. Used to go to the movies a lot ,but went for the first time in about four years last week . It was a new place in Port Orange Fl.,one of the Hollywood chain multiplex thingies. Yes it was nice,it was clean ,the stadium seating is really comfy. But, also homogenized, and,,,,,um,,,soulless. And because of a current lack of courtsey in people ,cell phones ringing then the user yakking away on it ,groups of teenagers yakking away, and management seems to care less. Remember when there were ushers that would take care of that.
Anyway there are a few of the old theatres being saved. One sucess story in my area is the "Athens" in Deland Fl. It took them several years to get it restored, funding issues mostly. But now it is finished and they have classic movies and live music shows. I know it is on the other side of the world but check out their website some time, might make a smile. I see they must have done something similar to the old "Knob Hill", I went there quite a few times around 1960.
Oklahoma City, OK Hollywood Theatres Brixton Square 8 7101 NW Expressway St
This one's gone now, too.
I grew up at NW 24th and Villa, and could see the rear of the old Villa Theater from our front porch. We used to dread whenever they'd show a new big film (several of the Bond films come to mind), because there was almost no parking by the theater, so people would park on both sides of our street. Some of our neighbors had their driveways blocked by unthinking moviegoers.
The owner of the theater bought up and demolished some homes on NW 24th, adjacent to the theater, with the intent of building a parking lot. Fortunately, the city refused to rezone the property (after plenty of protests from the other homeowners on the street). Those properties sat vacant long after the theater closed and the building demolished. It's just been in the last 5 years or so that new homes have been built on those vacant lots.

Edmond_Outsider 12-07-2010, 02:47 PM DOes anybody have any pictures from the Sooner Twin Drivein from Del City? There's still what I think was the projection booth's structure on the property.
MikeOKC 12-07-2010, 05:14 PM SOMEBODY HELP ME OUT HERE...THERE WAS A THEATER BY THE CIVIC CENTER...WHAT WAS THE NAME OF THAT THEATER??????Please....
Yep - The Centre. It's actually still there....sorta. The box office is original and much of the lobby is original. It's the home of the OKC Museum of Art Noble Theater.
ljbab728 12-07-2010, 10:55 PM What amazes me is when I counted which of the theaters listed I had gone to there were 48 of them. I never realized how much time I spent at movies but I know I always went at least once or twice a week when I was young. It's interesting that a few theaters that I went to aren't listed like the Criterion and the Centre.

Martin 12-08-2010, 06:17 AM they're not so old, but i didn't see reding (~sw 36th & western) or southpark (sw 44th & may) on the list. -M
OKCRT 12-08-2010, 09:44 AM So was the Criterion the most classy out of all the old time theaters? Many cities have an old theater that has been renovated, like the Fox in St. Louis.Does OKC have anything like that?

The Criterion was like that and amazing. The sad thing is that when I went there I was really too young to appreciate the building. It was just a movie theater to me and I was there for the movie.
ljbab728 12-08-2010, 10:29 PM The Warner, State and Cooper aren't listed either.
The State Theater and the Warner Theater are on the list. The Cooper Theater in earlier years was also called the Liberty and Harber Theater so it is listed under another name.
jmpokc1957 12-09-2010, 10:01 AM I remember the old Warr Acres Theater. Not sure if it's still there. It was a block or two north of NW 39th st on MacArthur. I still remember a film I saw there around 1969 or so. It was call "Dark of the Sun". Sticks in my mind for some reason.

rondvu 12-09-2010, 02:27 PM Another theater not mentioned on the list was The Solider Creek Drive-in. It was on the SW corner of S Douglas Blvd. and SE 15th. The old sign was moved years ago and repainted. It now stands rusted and faded on N Westminster and NW Minster.

Only theater that seemed you were going into a hole to watch a movie. Come to think of it, you did.
OKCRT 12-09-2010, 05:00 PM I only went in to the Rialto one time. I remember it as a small kinda seedy place downtown. I saw Joe Namath in CC & Company.

It wasn't too long ago that the Seats from the Criterion were sold...They were in a building downtown on the South side of I-40......I started to buy a set of them but really had no where to store them...

Wouldn't you say "The "Cooper" had to be the the most modern and "classy" theater in town?
ljbab728 12-11-2010, 11:12 PM Wouldn't you say "The "Cooper" had to be the the most modern and "classy" theater in town?
It was quite the place after it was remodeled into a "Cinerama" theater. I'm don't think it could have ever outdone the Criterion for class though.
RealJimbo 12-13-2010, 08:33 PM Wouldn't you say "The "Cooper" had to be the the most modern and "classy" theater in town?
I agree that the Criterion was the classiest theater in town, but the Continental was by far the most modern for its time, with reclining seats (they actually just leaned back a little) and the big screen. The building is still there although it hasn't been a theater for a long time.

I agree, the Continental was "state of the art" at the time it was built.

I went all the time--they always had two atomic radiation mutant movies every Saturday...saw them all and sat on the front row with all the die-hards...it was a marvelous place with **zero** adults in the theater...
ddavidson8 01-18-2011, 10:33 AM Unfortunately I think they finally tore down the Continental. There's still one left in Denver. The original theater has been preserved inside a megaplex.

Most amazing thing I saw there was 2001 (not during its original run, some re-issue of it), can't remember what year, though.

I agree there weren't many options in Norman then and that's one of the reasons that most of my movie going was in OKC even though I grew up there and didn't leave until after I started school at OU. Most of my parents' friends and relatives were in OKC so that's where we went most weekends. The theater situation improved a little when I was in college in the late 60's so I didn't have to leave town quite so much. Besides the Boomer there was a twin theater I could walk to from my fraternity house in the small shopping area just on the SW side of the campus.

You must remember the Berkowitz's...Wendy and her husband--and their Campus Corner antics...and the Gothic horror of a soda at Liberty Drug...you must have been a regular at the miniature golf course in that area as well...Heisman was the theaters (itty-bitty theaters with roll-up screens on a easel)...right?
flintysooner 01-19-2011, 05:35 AM You must remember the Berkowitz's...Wendy
I remember a Wendy Berlowitz (I think) who was a grad assistant in the English department when I was in school at OU. One day she decided to read a poem to her class that I think she authored but I could have that part wrong. Apparently she felt the recitation would be more effective if she performed in the nude.
It pretty much made a significant impression on quite a few people as I recall.
Seems like she had a husband or boyfriend or something who was also rather unique and maybe a father or father-in-law or something that was a professor. But I no longer remember the details.

Her husband was an acid-head back then--I think he either taught or did "research" (hysterical laughing) at OU...she auctioned her clothes one day on Campus Corner shortly after that incident in class--did get arrested for that...the Norman D.A. was miffed because none of the students who saw her disrobe in class were willing to press charges...

I am remembering a bit more as I think back. I think maybe the incident in the classroom happened after I graduated in 1970. I think it made the paper and maybe there was even a reporter present or something. Her husband was a genius kind of guy I think.

The incident happened in 1970, I think...her husband was another of those so-called "bright" people who accomplished nothing and was a drug-crazed lunatic--as was she--to a lesser extent. They were last seen by me--panhandling on Campus Corner...
ddavidson8 01-19-2011, 12:17 PM I miss the old commonwealth theaters that I grew up with. Northpark, Quail Twin and French Market. I know they weren't flashy, but being a kid and seeing the big event moviest there made an impact.

Ah yes, Quail Twin was a nice theatre - seeing Midway in Sensurround was very cool. Also saw Hendrix and Zeppelin midnight movies there, they did have a nice sound system (I think, assuming my memories are accurate) and biiiig screens. Saw some Andy Warhol 3-D movies at French Market. Waited in line for hours to see one of the original Star Wars trilogy (Empire or Jedi, can't remember) on the big screen at Northpark.

No doubt you repressed it...and not a bad idea...
ddavidson8 01-20-2011, 07:12 AM I saw Star Wars at North Park, Empire (several times) at Quail Twin, the trailer for Jedi at GC Quail Springs and finally Jedi at Northpark on the last day of school when I was in 4th grade. We rode our bikes from school to Northpark. The big theatre was packed and the employees were posted at the four corners of the theater with walkie talkies. I assume they were making sure the school kids behaved themselves.
Also saw Jedi at Northpark
Too young to remember where I saw Empire, but I do remember seeing it
Jesseda 01-24-2011, 02:02 PM Shields plaza 8 was the place i went as a young kid, i loved standing outside in the cold lines with my sister and parents, then be amazed by the snack bar area with all the mirrors, then the hall where you walk down to the theater number rooms reminded me of a space ship.. all the memories i loved them.. then when i hit teenage era , the place started turning into bad area to be , but it was the cheapest compared to the movies at crossroads... I kinda miss that dark theater entrance feel with all the odd designs

Saw several films on Shields in the 90's before they closed and killed it off, including Twister and A Time to Kill. It was a discount house then and that was great for catching films I only sort of wanted to see, or that I missed as first runs due to just being too dad gum busy.
Phoenix59 04-13-2011, 11:41 PM I used to walk over to the MacArthur Park 4 at 23rd and MacArthur for Saturday matinees when I was a kid -- maybe 8 or so. Can you imagine letting an 8-year old cross NW 23 OR MacArthur alone these days? Crazy.
I remember seeing the Rocky Horror Picture Show there for the first time in about 1976. I was just completely blown away. I had no idea what I was in for. ;)

I must say, I always enjoyed the 60's atmosphere. Something about the old Owen Field. I understand the need to grow and expand - not saying that. I just have fond memories of the more traditional style college football stadium. I saw recently in one of your posts about your attending every OU-Texas game since, what was it? 1965? That's amazing. Really.

Yup, that's right. I have very fond memories of the Old Owen Field. Does anyone remember what used to be called Pneumonia Downs? That was the area under the east side stands which was basically dirt and used for indoor track. It got a little cold during the winter. LOL
When I was in high school at Norman High and in the band, we used Owen Field for our home games. Marching through the under stadium area produced amazing sounds and echos while playing fight songs.
perrygreen 07-22-2011, 02:44 PM My childhood in OKC spanned 83-91, but I remember what I believe was called the Super Saver Cinema on NW Expressway. I think it was a dollar theater when I attended regularly.
I clearly remember walking up to that thing for the first time and seeing the really cool blue and red flashing glass blocks. Then there was the arcade inside. It felt like you were walking into a space station. I'd love to see a picture of that place again.
EDIT - I guess it was called Lakeshore 8 or something like that. The site in the original post had 7 (depressing) pictures that I guess were taken just before it was demolished. I wish I could see a picture of it in all of its original glory. Of course, the glory wouldn't be the same to an adult as it was to a kid walking up to it as a 5 or 6 year old.
capitalhillkid 10-31-2011, 12:37 PM We had our local Capital Hill theaters, the Yale and the Redskin, and went there often, but the Big Deal was to go to the big theaters downtown. One dressed up for that. The interiors were like a fancy opera house. Of course, some of them had been Vaudeville theaters before. There were uniformed ushers with flashlights to show you to the seat.

Capacity jumped from 72K in 1980 to about 76K with the opening of the new south endzone stands that included new football offices. The stands, which replaced wooden, green bleachers that were vintage from the 50's, were purposely built as a standalone structure rather than connecting with the existing stadium. ADA requirements bumped the capacity down a bit in the 80's, and the construction of a line of suites at the base of the pressbox reduced capacity a bit more.
Addition of the east club deck and larger upper deck increased the stadium's rated capacity back to about 82K, although it routinely holds in excess of 85K on game day by virtue of folks visiting the club seats and some general admission seats.
