You're getting warm General, but they weren't the first.

All Right, I know the original Boomerang in Norman had Curly Fries.....And I want to think that Del Rancho had them in the early sixties....Now, I know for sure the Western Dip and Potter's (Al 'n Dub's) had straight cut fries. McDonald's has always had Straight cut....Bixler's (before your time) had curly fries if you special ordered them.....Hmmm give me a few minutes to kick the old brain in gear......Now, I know Arby's and Jack in the Box have Curly Fries but they don't call them Suzy Q's....you got me but don't tell me the answer, I'll call in the Gurus of this thread....for help....

Ok, here's another hint: they were invented at a classic Oklahoma City restaurant. It's still around. But you can't go there unless you're prepared to fly or take a very, very long drive.

Then it had to do with Jack and not the sons, I would imagine.

Nice try Fuzzy, but no again...
Here's another hint for you.
Burgers, shakes and old time favorites are still sold not just where this classic restaurant was located, but also where another city classic was located as well. Alas, it's not the same as these current offerings are hardly unique, but rather can be found pretty much anywhere in the country.

Steve,
I noticed the Curtis Investment Company on your okchistory site. Kip Curtis
sold the property about 2 years ago. Kip is still around, in fact I saw him
Saturday at Ingrid's and gig with him around town. He's a fine pianist.

Steve
02-08-2010, 08:41 AM
No kidding? Is this the Curtis who owned the properties on NW 23?

was?
A chicken fried steak, gravy, a hot link, onions, bbq sauce, chopped pork,
chili, susy-Q's and a fried egg all between two waffles served with a Root
Beer Float.

Yes. His dad started the company. Kip had a pop culture clothing store in
that location for a while.

Ardmore? Purcell? Bugtussel?

I think you've told us but I really don't know.

I'm going to guess Kingfisher, though I'll be curious as to how General defines the start of TG&Y.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Come on now, Ardmore was built (first one) in July of 1967. Purcell was established in the late 70's and Bugtussle is still on the drawing board......The First TG&Y was NOT in OKC......and the first Store manager for the "New" firm was C.A. "Pat" Henderson who became the first President of the company after Mr. Young (founder) stepped down.....

This will probably be one of those "oh yeah" moments.

The First TG&Y was NOT in OKC......

the why ask a trivia question about it on OKC talk??

The first one was in Norman btw, In 1936.. from okstate.edu:

"With the philosophy of "have what people want at a price they can afford to pay," the T.G.& Y. corporation opened its first variety store in Norman, Oklahoma, in 1936 and expanded to 930 outlets nationwide by the 1980s. The company was organized by Rawdon E. Tomlinson (ca. 1883 1948) of Frederick, Enoch L. "Les" Gosselin (1901 77) of Cordell, and Raymond A. Young (1904 2002) of Kingfisher. When they met at a trade show in Oklahoma City in 1932, they individually operated variety stores throughout the state. In 1935 the three men pooled their resources and formed a firm known as Central Merchandise Corporation to build a warehouse in Oklahoma City. The storage facility allowed them to purchase bulk quantities directly from manufacturers rather than from wholesalers such as Butler Brothers. When Tomlinson, Gosselin, and Young opened their first jointly owned outlet in 1936, the company's name came from the initials of their last names, placed in order of their age, with Tomlinson being the oldest. On February 1, 1946, the business incorporated under Delaware laws as T.G.& Y. Stores Company. "

I think it's very valid for OKC Talk because TG&Y was a huge OKC-based company.

Fuzzy Toad, you're right 100%. Don't see you on here very often and the fact that most of us try and research on finding answers of the past. There is a TG&Y thread on the Nostalgia and most of the people on here have some very fond memories of TG&Y and a lot of us even worked for them....Some of us Knew the people (except Tomlinson) very well and a thought from the past is very refreshing.....Thanks for your participation....
