Hello all,
I am new to the area and was wondering if there is anything you can suggest to do around here. I am in the outdoor scene and theatre and arts. I am 23 and just got off of active duty. I going to OU full time as well. Thanks in advance.

50 views and no suggestions??

You "there's so much to do in OKC!!!!" folks sure aren't lending any validity to your claim if you can't give this veteran any suggestions.

Welcome to OKCTalk Rashell :welcome5:

Welcome to OKC! It seems like it's a pretty easy question, but I think it's so broad that it is overwhelming to sit down and respond. I would suggest watching the threads on this forum, pickup the latest edition of the Oklahoma Gazette and look around Wimgo (http://wimgo.com/), talk to others of like-mind that are familiar with the metro. Again, a big welcome!

What do you mean by outdoor scene? Like hiking and camping?

Hi Rashell,

Can't help much too much with the outdoor scene unless I know more specifics (see warren's post, above), but there are LOTS of arts programs around.

Check out the calendar at the Civic Center Music Hall (http://www.okcciviccenter.com/)to find the best in Broadway, ballet, philharmonic performances, etc. They also host small theatrical performaces, often with student ticket pricing.

The OKC Museum of Art (http://www.okcmoa.com/)has lots of exiting classes and workshops, as well as independent film offerings.

IAO Gallery (http://www.iaogallery.org/) and Untitled Artspace (http://www.artspaceatuntitled.org/)are two great local galleries, often with FREE exhibitions, that also have lots of great events.

This summer, the City will play host to lots of outdoor arts activities, including

Oklahoma Shakespeare in the Park (http://www.oklahomashakespeare.com/)
The Twilight Concert Series put on by OKC Arts Council (http://www.artscouncilokc.com/)

Of course, in April, we have our annual Festival in the Arts over by the Myriad Botanical Gardens. Nearly 200 artists, sculptors plus loads more performing arts groups and artists will be on hand for this five-day festival, considered to be one of the premiere arts festivals in the country. Oh, and the food is amazing!

One of my favorite events, aside from the Arts Festival (http://www.artscouncilokc.com/festival-of-the-arts), is the deadcenter Film Festival (http://www.deadcenterfilm.org/), the second weekend in June. It's a 4-day festival in celebration of independent film, some of it Okie-produced and directed. They also sponsor other screenings and shorts nights throughout the year.

As someone else suggested the OK Gazette always has a weath of information about arts-related activities.

Hope this helps!

Wichita Wildlife Refuge is my favorite hiking in the area. Western History Museum is always fun. The Gazette, I agree, is good at listing events.

Welcome to OKC, and thank you for your service!!

I know the weather isnt right for this, or at least not for long anyway, but when it gets nice out make sure and visit the OKC Zoo. I went last summer and even though it was 103 degrees i had a great time. Also there is the Omniplex next door which is really cool. Just a couple of ideas for starters.

I'm new here too and would like some suggestions also :)

I like dancing and the club scene. I like new and different things, like exciting places that don't exist anywhere else, or adrenalin-rush activities. I've been in College Station for the past 8 years, so I'm over the whole horseriding & outdoorsy thing.

I'm also really into supernatural-type activities, like TAPs or groups like that. I've already stayed a few nights at the Skirvin and wasn't as impressed as the Knicks or the Bulls, LOL.

Any suggestions would be appreciated! :)

I'm very outdoorsy, but there are different breeds of us. You should be a little more specific. There are tons of good mountain bike trails in OKC and a lot more within a 2hr drive. There are also tons of places to go fishing. You could go rock climbing at Rocktown, or take a trip to the Wichita Mtns SW of OKC.

Be a little more specific, and you'll get some better answers.

Oh my Purple Church that would scare the "H" out of him....LOL. How about Red Rock Canyon or Alabaster Caverns near Woodward. Sulphur offers the Chickasaw National recreation area.

Umm... let me see. I'm 22, taking a break from college, have a girl friend and I live roughly 5 minutes from downtown OKC.... what do I do?

Let me see, I like going to the Green House, it's a Hookah Bar/Club. There are several clubs to go to around here... don't have a favorite. I like to geocache with my mom/dad who are outdoorsy people. I've even taken my girlfriend who enjoys it as well. The movies are always popular as anywhere... the IAO gallery always has something going on, I mainly go to things put on by JayB which is a local guy, he's from the hiphop scene so if you are into art and hip hop, (old school hip hop) thats the guy to know.. there are several places that DJ around here. I also enjoy fishing, which there is no place lacking in fishing... unlike my brother who is into the whole haunted places TAPS thing... i am not, but according to him there are several places like that around here that seem to be haunted. NBA games are good, so are redhawks games if you like AAA teams. We don't lack in Casino options, so if gambling is something you like to do, we have it. I'm still waiting for riverboat gambling on the OK River! Dining is good... we don't lack in places to eat from the fast food to the artistically owned, to down right spend your whole paycheck type of places. Speaking of artsy, there is the Paseo... it's just north of 23rd, can't remember the cross streets right off... then there is bricktown... lots to do there... rock climbing, canal rides, horse carriage rides, restaurants, clubs, various entertainment, little shopping, etc. Of course there are hidden gems all over the place depending on what you're into. Oklahoma pretty much boasts almost ever type of fair climate and eco system. Tornado season is always fun. Interesting coffee bars, sandwich shops, baking companies, theatre, small and medium sized music venues, indie art places, museums, etc... we have a lot, it's not totally all publicized, but any local knows about it.

I guess... mention what you're into and we can tell you where to go.

There are a few paranormal groups in the area. I'll get the information tomorrow and send it to ya.

Well, I took a trip Post and Wilshire to see the Purple Church on friday night.

Can't say I was too impressed. We got no readings and the hole in the ground wasn't as scary as I was led to believe. No dead animals. No red-eyed dog. No men in white suits with guns.

I haven't been there in so long, too bad you missed out on that rumored red-eye dog haha. I'm planning on visiting some of haunted stuff some time soon, I hear there's an old abandoned asylum in Tulsa.

The Oklahoma Museum of Art is pretty cool, they screen a lot of good movies their too. Film | Oklahoma City Museum Of Art (http://www.okcmoa.com/film)
