MOORE — A woman who grew up in Moore has been hired as the city’s director of parks and recreation, City Manager Steve Eddy said.

Cynthia Mayo Deckard joins the city staff Jan. 4, Eddy said.

Moore has been without a permanent parks and recreation director for six months.

Deckard, a 1994 graduate of Westmoore High School, has a bachelor’s degree in environmental design and a master’s degree in landscape architecture.

She is currently employed as a landscape architect with the Denton, Texas, parks department and has been an adjunct professor in landscape architecture at the University of Texas at Arlington.

"I’m excited to get back home and be part of that parks and recreation department,” Deckard said.

Deckard was among 50 applicants for the position, Eddy said. Her starting salary is $72,850.

Focus on parks
Moore plans to increase its emphasis on parks planning, including a creation of a separate parks master plan, Eddy said.

The city currently has about 12 parks, but Buck Thomas Park, Veterans Park and Little River Park are the most heavily used, Eddy said. More parks are needed in southeast Moore, he said.

Deckard also will be involved in coordinating the city’s recreation programs as well as special activities in the parks, such as Moore’s annual Independence Day celebration.
