I work for a real estate company and did a photo shoot from one of the Block 42 units. It was a facing downtown and the rooftop patio view was AMAZING and this was even before the Devon Tower was started or even publicly known. I will have to see if I can find the image and I will post it.

I finally found the shot. Nice angle from Block 42, I believe it was off of the 3rd floor balcony or rooftop patio. http://i1122.photobucket.com/albums/l527/mrktguy29/P8136164.jpg

Taken on Monday from Newcastle, near the microwave tower if you know the area...it's the best zoom I got.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/earlywinegareth/5469490653/

It took me a few minutes but I found the exact spot you took your photo. It is 18.5 miles (97,863 feet) from where you took the photo to the center of Devon Tower. There aren't many places on Earth where you can see 18.5 miles unless you are on a mountain.

^^^That area is known as "top o' the world" for those of us who grew up in Norman. There's a stretch of Hwy 9 a couple miles east of where Hwy 9 meets US 62 that offers a really spectacular vista. From there you can plainly see the Norman skyline and OU to the east, Tinker to the northeast, and downtown OKC to the NNE. At night when planes are coming in to WRWA, well, words fail. I recommend it.

Ahh! Thanks Gareth for taking the picture lol. Yeah, it definitely needs a major zoom. That's pretty much exactly where I was saying for someone to take the picture from.

Growing up in Newcastle, I've got to see that view my whole life. At night time... it's spectacular to look DOWN on the lights of the entire metro.

Most people don't even know of this geography, but it's a pretty high spot. It's about 200 feet higher elevation than the tower farm up north, but apparently the property is so pricey, most towers are built up north.

Although, it must not be too pricey for Boren... should see the "house" he just built that looks down on Norman.

Oh, and that Microwave tower got renovated into the new KFOR radar. Even though the idiots were advertising it in Moore. /sigh. Playing off the May 3rd tornado over 10 years later.

Yep, perfect angle where all the buildings line up just right and you can also see Leadership Square, which helps to make the skyline look more modern.

And because Devon Tower is more to the back of the photo, it won't completely overwhelm everything else even when finished.

Back to the photo from Newcastle, I've grown to love how you can see so incredibly far from certain places in town. There are some spots well north of Lake Hefner where downtown is clearly visible.

Thanks to everyone for all these great photos and videos!

Here's the one I wanted up yesterday. Sorry folks. A lot goes into it. I'm adding screen captures to the video pages and takes extra time. They're on a Flickr page.

Here's the unedited 1080p version on YouTube. It's still compressed by YouTube however.

If anyone would want the 1080p screen capture instead let me know. They look much better.

At 6:55 in the Vimeo clip, when it says "West on Main. St.", I didn't notice until I zoomed in that a cop was at the light down the street. I forgot to unmute the microphone too. It was a perfect shot and I re-used another audio clip. He came down towards me and flew down the nearest street on that corner. I wonder what he thought when he stopped at the light and saw somebody standing in the middle of Main with something in their hand. I just ignored him when he drove past me.

There's a spot on Sorghum Mill Road (NW 234th St) that's between May and Pennsylvania that gives a great view of downtown! That's 17 miles as the crow flies.

There is a fantastic view of downtown AND the NW Expressway skyline from the Integris Cancer Institute at Memorial & Macarthur. I took several pictures of it while working there. If that 3 story medical office building had been taller, like 10 stories, the view would be even better as you would have Lake Hefner in the foreground.

^^^I read somewhere Lake Hefner is near the highest point in OK County, so that would make another gr8 elevated viewing area. I'd like to see a pic taken from the top of Founders Tower. Geez, Devon is nowhere near being completed and it's already making a huge impact on the skyline. Can't wait to see what it will be like in a few months!

Would be interesting to note (with images) when the WTC is as tall as the Devon Tower will be. This should be still a ways off though as Devon will be taller than WTC 7 and WTC 1 has not topped that yet.

Anyone know the exact height of Devon Tower with the addition of the 33rd floor now?? Should just about match, or either be slightly taller or slightly shorter than the Mid-Continent Tower in Tulsa (513 ft.) by now. Either way, Devon is officially the new tallest in OKC now, passing Chase (500 ft.) with the 33rd floor foundation poured....making it the new 5th tallest in the state, OR the new 4th tallest IF IT PASSED THE MID-CONTINENT BLDG, TOO. In any case, WAY TO GO DEVON!!!....YOU'RE DEFINITELY STANDING OUT NOW!!! But could someone with the accurate stats & numbers please get back to me on that?? THANX

Pete

With the completion of the 32nd floor (33rd is underway) I have the building height at 513 feet.

earlywinegareth
02-27-2011, 08:40 AM
One could argue that technically, Devon is the tallest in the state "under construction" while BoK and Chase are still the tallest "completed" buildings in their cities. Why such a hurry to rip the titles away? It will happen soon enuf and yes, I can be a thorny geek. ;)

scrapethaskies12
02-27-2011, 11:55 AM
Well if that 513 figure is correct (give or take a few inches), that TIES Devon with Mid-Continent for 4th tallest in the state. Also, Devon will surpass the First Place Tower in Tulsa (516 ft.) with just the addition of the next floor!! Then just the other two to pass up which should happen sometime around late spring if the rate of construction stays about the same. THANX DEVON for helping breathe life back into OKC....and the state for that matter!!!

And you'll have to excuse some of us for being a bit over-technical and over-excited, "earlywinegareth". I know I sounds like I'm gona wet my pants when Devon finally surpasses BOK. But besides us finally getting a major professional sports team to be nationally recognized by, OKC was long overdue for some notoriety. Tired of travelling to other states and people asking me silly questions like "Do yall have vehicles there, or do yall still ride around on horses?"....and "Do they still have wild-west style shoot-outs there?"....or "Oklahoma??!! Wheres that at and whats there to do out there?" Now, with all the new excitement and growth going on here, maybe I can shut up some of my out-of-state, smart-ass friends for once....and without having to mention the bombing of the Murrah building anymore. And yes, there ARE alot of narrow-minded idiots around the country that think the U.S. only consists of New York, California, Atlanta, Chicago, Miami, and maybe just a few other places. So again, excuse some of us if we seem to be a bit over-excited about the small details of the new life flourishing in our city (and state).

Tell you what. Once the tower is finished, and you get anymore of those asinine questions, just send them an image of a cowboy superimposed in front of the Devon tower. That should shut them up, and if it doesn't who cares anyway.

Just got in from being downtown all afternoon. Had a nice walk around and got some nice shots of various projects. Will get some posted as soon I sort them out.
