Wow... some of the few pics of the city that you can show the old and the new, and i prefer the new... granted those are the 1972 pics... i'm curious what both of those vantage points looked like in the 30's...

That's not entirely correct because the Regency Towers building is in the background also.

Biggest difference between 1972 and now? There are people in the 1972 picture.

Were you around downtown in late 60s early 70s? It was mostly very seedy and there were few people around. There is WAY more activity and life now. The stretch where the Biltmore stood was especially seedy with the Hotel Black at the next corner (the Hotel Black wasn't known for its architecture, btw). I remember a state YMCA function in high school where we stayed at the Biltmore and had huge problems in the lobby and the streets with hookers and drunks. You can pick another time to glorify, but this time frame was not a great time to be downtown.

I don't see one soul in the 1972 picture.... now in 1947 there was a crowd.

You ought to see the crowd on game night..... too many folks down there.

Not really saying it was a better time or not. It seems that people were the problem then not what buildings were still standing. I wouldn't know since the photos are ten years before my time. I know there's plenty of older folks who actually remember that time. It's mostly for the younger folks. I think everyone who calls this city their home needs a history lesson and who knows maybe someone young will get inspired like I did seeing what their city used to be like. You have to consider the past when you move onward into the future. Perhaps it will give some new appreciation for what's left and what the city could be in the coming decades. The younger generations are who will carry the city into this century.

Historypin seems to be much better. Looks like someone from Okhistory already did a bunch of them. They're some I haven't seen too. The high quality, non Oklahoma Historical Society watermarked images. This should help people get an idea of where the buildings used to be. This would have helped me a lot if I knew about it a couple years ago.

A few aren't quite accurate but you can post comments on each photo. Requires a Google account. Our StreetView is so outdated, Devon Energy Center has been planned, constructed and finished since the Fall 2007-2008 images were created.

Given how much the Google Maps cars have been seen around over the last two years it is surprising they do not have a faster way of integrating new images

This will look really, really cool.

Combined with the Myriad Gardens, the skating rink and the Colcord, this area is a going to be a holiday wonderland. I bet the tower will have some cool holiday color schemes as well.

I went on a top to bottom tour of the Devon Tower yesterday. All I can say is WOW! They absolutely spared no expense. The imported stonework on every floor is absolutely incredible. They used stones from all over the world and had them perfectly matched. The entire building is a work of art.

Envious! I would love to tour the building as well. Devon is a company I admire immensely. They are one of the best corporate citizens in the US.

I couldn't help but have a huge cheesey smile as I saw it and walked around it. It is HUGE and very detailed. Splendid job by Devon on the Christmas decorations! The metal pine cones inside the rotunda also look amazing. All the trees around the Devon campus are wrapped with lighting as well. They don't appear to be as wrapped to the extent of the Chesapeake campus trees, but they should look very classy at night.

They are LED and thus don't really burn out. The ones are out now were just damaged when the window panels were installed. I have no idea why it's taking them so long to get them all fixed.

And I agree that huge ornament is greatness. I really want to get back to OKC during the Christmas season to see the Myriad Gardens, Devon and Auto Alley.

What a difference from just last season!

I dunno.... I just... I dunno. I saw this at Nebu today and frankly didn't know what to think. I honestly couldn't get over the fact that the ornament was killing the nice lawn under it.

It is big, and it is detailed. Just not sure if that is a good thing.

I suppose DVN has to prove they've got the biggest "Christmas Balls" when you've got CHK pushing for the biggest "Energized Christmas Tree Blinding Insanity Christmas Explosion" lights display they do every year. Oh, oil companies.

Still not quite sure what to think.

I concur with your preference and I am fairly certain that ["the reason for the season"] would agree.
Symbols are simply cymbals . . . if they have no meaning. =)

So . . . would "Devon sticks" be an appropriate stocking stuffer?
Like . . . for the "HOLYdaze"? =)

I would be very surprised if most if not all their lights are on motion sensors, so I have no idea why they would all be on at that time of the morning.

Turning off unnecessary lights is a big part of getting LEED certification, and that was a stated goal.
