Ya know... you're right... dang it.

I don't agree. Because, in the picture with this POV, you're looking west south west. The Chase Tower is two blocks east, one block north of the site for the Devon Tower making the Devon Tower appear precisely as it is--behind and just to the right (practically directly west) of the Chase Tower. Its proximity to the Oklahoma Tower is just about perfect. If you move it, in your rendering, between the Chase Tower and the current Devon headquarters, it's going to be way too far away from the Oklahoma Tower--and you can't slide that too, lol.

No, it's on the same North-South plane as Oklahoma Tower and it's practically on top of it. It definitely needs to come to the left, but not quite as far as Watson suggested.

Then, at least, its south edge should be just a little behind the northern most side of the Chase building. Glad we're in agreement. Still a pretty good pic! It's my desktop background at work ;-)

How about splitting this threa, mods?

The tower's height is now estimated at 908 feet, consisting of a glass skin that would cover 16 football fields. The glass is designed to be transparent — and not like the reflective “mirror-like” facades used with office tower construction in the 1980s.

Yep. Site work set to begin the first week of October. Ironically, back when Larry Nichols first announced Devon was building tower and that he expected it to be 37 stories, you guys would have flipped for 50. Goes to show how expectations change.

I suggest we all start protesting the height of the building. The price of construction have gone way down, so they should be able to make it taller. No excuses.

If this height is final, then it is an embarassment to the city.

Thunder
08-14-2009, 09:31 PM
I'm ashamed of Devon. Just what reason do they have to cut it shorter? We should start a protest, movement, campaign, or something to demand that building to be closer to 1,000 ft. We should not accept any excuses.

I hope they are reading this. :fighting2

Pondering if the number 908 has a particular significance, or if it's a mere co-inkidink of a revised design.

...Riiiiiiiight.

Makes sense to me. It's still just as big, just not as tall. If they had to cut it for the economy they would have had to make it smaller, because it would have been about shrinking the company more than shrinking the building. They ended up getting one more office per floor, so obviously they didn't need the extra floors.

I'm surprised so many are getting upset by this. It's an awesome building. They could build that design at 37 stories and it would be cool and still add a lot to the skyline. And did people really think that buildings are built exactly like their first rendering?

The biggest difference this project will make is with the millions of dollars it will bring to the downtown economy and in TIF improvements to the area. 4 floors one way or the other don't change that. It's not like 4 floors suddenly made Oklahoma City's skyline better than Dallas's anyway, so I have no idea why anyone is hung up on that.

ThunderB
08-15-2009, 06:58 AM
I think people are more upset at the uncertainty than anything else. Many people have been disappointed over the years with plans being done away with completely. Anytime a shrinkage is announced, it brings worry that it is "just the beginning".

USG '60
08-15-2009, 07:28 AM
Heck, those were the floors for "little people" anyway. Seventeen divided by 4 is 4 1/4' per floor. They must have fired all of their midgets.

Pete
08-15-2009, 07:39 AM
In many ways it's a relief to know the plans are final, it's still 50 floors, wickedly tall and has all the great design features.

I'm sure at this point there won't be any further changes and that's great news.

betts
08-15-2009, 08:01 AM
The "my tower is bigger than your tower" stuff is so short-lived anyway. It probably wouldn't be long before some other tower in the region topped it. We aren't going to miss those four stories, since the site on which it will sit is considerably less than 50 right now. I'm just thrilled they're going forward with plans to build it, as it's a beautiful building and will be a tremendous addition to the OKC skyline. Let's not sweat the "small" stuff.

Don't be so shortsighted, ronronnie. You are flipping out over whole 17 feet? Are you f-ing kidding me? Put a 925 ft tall tower next to a 908 ft tower and no matter how close or how far you are, you will not even see a difference. Heck, do a quick sketch in AutoCAD 2009. That should be enough to put the whining to rest.

Besides, read the article. They decided to build their data center offsite near Will Rogers World Airport. Being in the IT field, that's a smart move. That is what reduced the building from 54 to 50 floors. It's good for disaster recovery, which is very important for IT and for the company.

And with Larry Nichols as such a huge fan of DT OKC, much less the city itself, why in the hell would he decide to uproot to Hellston? Do your homework.

kevinpate
08-15-2009, 08:57 AM
Finally read the article. Appears those floors still get built, just built elsewhere in OKC instead of right there in the same tower. In other words, they are doing what's perceived as being a sounder decision for the company rather than merely grabbing, however briefly, 'mine's bigger' rights.

No issues with the explanation here, but then I care so little about Dallas, 98% of more of Texas for that matter, that having a taller building than them isn't a hot button for me anyway.

Bottom line - Lots of eggs sometimes do need more than one basket, and they've decided this is one of those times.

OKCisOK4me

Ok you guys have convinced me that I just need to be happy a tower is being built, 908 is nothing to sneeze at. It is still going to be the largest in Oklahoma, even BOK in Tulsa is only 667. So I am excited, can't wait until constructions begins!
