I thought I read somewhere that the Willis tower has these glass appendages built onto it to draw more people to the tower. They apparently have glass walls and floors. Devon could do that at the very top for the adrenaline junkies.

Yes they do, and it's amazing!

I have noticed that the elevator cores have not risen, are the cores complete?

Yes, the elevator cores are either complete or nearly complete.

The crown will be extended but not the center of the building.

The same, the pictures was taken in order from the bottom upward. Walked through the MBG and around the tower. We can now get really close to it like about 100 feet or so (much less on the south side). It felt like face-to-face as I looked up and felt its power. When I looked up at the Chase Tower, it felt like Shorty Tower to me and its really ugly (shown in pictures). Lots of workers out there seem to like waving.

Very nice pictures Thunder. Notice that there is not a 2nd floor marked for the hoist level. First number is 3 on the hoist. Ground floor then "3". Maybe that is where the confusion is with the "what floor are we on now"

Yes, I did, its amazing. Its all so much bigger and overwhelming.

On the south side, you can get really close to the wall and look up. And on the northeast corner, you can even get closer. I will show in the below picture just how close you can get (even have the crane swing above you). Walk right up to that black gate. :-)

You're new so I'll explain it for you since I have no clue what page it would have been on. When they first started the tower, between ground level (1) and (3), there is a mini floor up above, that will probably house security operations and what not. That level is 2, hence the 3 you see.

Hey, Don't get all upset about what I am going to say, But I just thought that the west wing and the rotundra would look a little different then what we see in Thunders pictures. I know that the drawings and models made before construction is just that, and I really like the design of the window panels, but man it is a lot of the same over and over. I think the rotundra should have had the white beams on the outside like a skeleton, or have the w. wing have a little concrete showing. I don't hate it, but I think it is just too much of the same thing. On another note, It is interesting that they actually shifted the beams on this floor where the V beams would meet it. I thought the V beam would crossed the straight beam and they not build the straight beam above the V beam. Instead they are moving the beams over so that the V beam meets at the top of each adjusted straight beam.

I heard a rumor that the construction co. screwed up the beams on the taper. All construction was halted until the architect and engineers redesigned the upper floors that contain the mechanical equipment.

holm, I tend to agree that there is a lot of sameness across the rotunda and garden wing structures but I want to see what it all looks like when complete.

The rotunda actually has more transparent glass and it also doesn't have the raised stainless bars framing the glass panels. Sections of the garden wing also have this same type of glazing. It will be interesting to see the finishes on the auditorium.

Even if it were true, the taper is somewhat inconsequential where it goes for the mechanical elements as long as the the core beams of are good since that is where the mechanical elements are. I have doubts that if it were off, it would be anything that will require much redesign.

It is the file size. You probably uploaded 5 megapixel photos which are huge files. Every time someone opens this thread and sees the photos they get transfered and it counts against your bandwidth. You need to convert the files to a smaller file size before loading them to photobucket.

Yeah, but I don't want less quality to be recorded into history. I could use my server, but its more work getting links than Photobucket's quick Direct Link copy/paste. The Pro account costs 25 bux a year, I'll look into that.

I just received a PM and discovered a shocking discovery. I want everyone to thank cameron_405 for his donation to set my Photobucket's account to Pro for the year! I didn't know that Photobucket could do the gift like that, so really thanks to him. The account was 500 megs away from suspension. lol I think not only here, but people are sharing the pix elsewhere, too, so now the pix will stay there without bandwidth limit. :-)

So, give thanks to cameron_405 for helping with the pictures to stay available for everyone else to enjoy. In a few weeks or so, I will go out there to take more pix (when crown is done). What I use is Samsung Epic with Sprint and it does a great job for a phone. lol

I can 't help but wonder why they choose to place the LEDs only on the indentions. Because those areas are recessed it really limits both what can be displayed and who can see it. If they didn't want to spend money for the whole building I wish they would have used the LEDs on the big flat walls instead. They would have been like giant TV screens.

Thunder
07-27-2011, 10:06 AM
UnFrSaKn, its real kool to see the top so clearly. I couldn't do that with my phone as it gets a bit fuzzy the more I zoom in.

As for the crane operators, do they have to climb the whole distance or do they take an elevator to a point then climb the rest of the distance to the top?

Pete
07-27-2011, 10:25 AM
Because the indentions represent a much smaller area but still allow for lots of effects that run the entire height of the building. Also, I'm told there will be a ton of lighting in the crown, which will be the most visible part. The cost is all about lineal feet of LED.

Remember there are indentions on three sides so from most angles you will be able to see two of them plus the crown.

As cool as it would be to have the capability for the whole building -- and this is what I was really hoping for -- at some point Devon has to be responsible to their shareholders and employees and not go completely over the top.

UnFrSaKn
07-27-2011, 11:48 AM
It would be cool if there was a glow that started near the bottom, then went to the crown and then pulsed or glowed and repeated. Slowly of course.

Hey pete look at Unforsaken's first photo, you can see that on floor 49 and 50, the actual floor on 50 does not go all the way to the edge. So basically if we were on floor 50, we can look down off a balcony or rail to the 49th floor below. So if the restaurant is on these two floors, then we would be able to see this in person. Does anyone else see how there is an opening from those two floors on that first pic?

I have not seen a mention for any plans to have balconies up there. If so, I'd love to be the first up there to take pictures. lol

That will be cool if we are on the 49th floor and we can look up all the way to the top of the crown in that section between the Veered beams. Don't spell check me people if I spelled that wrong! LOL

I am not meaning a balcony that is hanging off the side of the building. In that picture I see that the 50th "floor" doesnt go all the way to the edge, while the 49th does. It is only in that area where the beams are slanted. Look at that pic and hopefully you can image it. Plus, I dont think any of us have actually seen a floor plan for every floor at the top. Why not have a two story restaurant and has a way to have an opening to the lower level.

My bad, its hard to explain pictures and architecture in a short phrase!:dizzy:

I understand exactly what you're talking about Holm. It appears that the last FULLY completed floor is open to the level below it, creating sort of a "mini" atrium within the crown. You can see it in the following UnFrSaKn picture in the 'V' section of the crown. It is hard to explain that feature without being well-versed in the specific knowledge of construction and architecture. Because I have no idea either.

On edit, I wonder if this is repeated in the other two 'V' sections as well. Because the next levels are following that change.
