Good, it's about time some Indian tribe took over that race track. Now hopefully there will be a full blown casino built in that area of town.

Yeah, the Chickasaws are really into tourism.

I could definitely see them building a hotel to top the Cherokees Hard Rock Hotel.

We need the tribes to be more competitive like Tulsa and OKC. They could compete to see who has the best and coolest casinos.

They could build a theme hotel with views of the race track and the zoo. They could attract Cirque de Soleil and an insane restaurant!

I'm guessing we will see something pretty soon to rival Tulsa's HR casino!

the commentary on all of this today was that it will probably close late November for 80 million... and that the subsidiary will plan to spend 12 million over the next four years..... Lets hope that it will be far greater than what has been mentioned....

:LolLolLol

Hopefully, there are more non-Oklahomans visiting our casinos than Oklahomans, but I'm not sure how that works out.

I'd like to see them add a nice theater venue. I think it would be good for the district to have a theater to bring more of the casino acts into the city, even if they are usually of the burnt out variety.

I agree. I went there a couple years ago and from the website it looked amazing. When we pulled into the parking lot I was very disappointed, it was like very large tents. The inside was still very impressive though.

Actually, from your post you have not been there in a couple of years but they have done a massive remodel on both the inside and outside of the casino with facades representing France, Beijing, London etc,, with the insides being these amazing fresco paintings murals and fountains. Also, they just had the grand opening of the Winstar Hotel and Resort which has a day spa, restaurants, championship golf course with pools and fountains. Very top notch!!

Wow. I have no idea how I didn't know about that. I've only been able to find a picture of the hotel (it's nice). What does the outside of the hotel look like?

Riverwind has already molested Hard Rock's casino. There is no contest there. WinStar is already on another level from the Hard Rock, too.

The Chickasaw Nation has yet to build a hotel that can compete with the CHR in Catoosa, but I wouldn't put it past them to build a resort hotel at some point - and the Adventure District would be a brilliant place for it. That area needs a hotel last year.

I don't think I'd like to stay at a hotel in that part of town though. It has potential to be a nice area, but the crime rate is too high. I barely even go to Tinseltown these days.

I think that's mostly perception. There's an RV park right there. If tourists were a target, that would be hit first and I sure haven't heard about anything.

Agreed. It's cheap facade. Definitely not comparable to Las Vegas, especially the strip, now maybe something off the strip, and definitely nicer than downtown Vegas.

Okay. That's irrelevant because if they invested the money for those facades to improve their image, then they are obviously not that "cheap." At least they took the intiative to do so is what I'm saying.

We have seen a few of the burnt out variety, and was pleasantly surprised. We saw Vicki Lawrence (Momma's Family) and Wayne Newton (Mr. Las Vegas) at The Grand in Shawnee.

Vicki was a blast. Half of her show was in the role of "Momma". If you can imagine a rated R Momma!

You are right, the theater/performing arts adds a lot to the casino.

Why do people keep asking this? No one dishes out $82 million dollars for a racetrack just to get rid of the horseracing. There are ACRES and ACRES of parking lot that could be expanded onto.

Swake2
09-13-2009, 07:46 AM
They are going to be very limited in what they can add. The casino can't be expanded and they can't add table games. All against the rules.

They own the property, they can't change the track/casino without changing the state laws and the compact between the tribes and the state regarding gambling. The land is not in reserve so state law applies.

And it's highly unlikely the land could be placed in trust, it's outside the Chickasaws national area.

Steve
09-13-2009, 10:19 AM
Let's see now.... the racinos were placed at a disadvantage at the insistance of competing tribes. Now the tribes own the racinos. Does anyone doubt the compact will change now?

The Cherokees and the Chickasaws both own racetracks for sure. That's the two big ones as far as gaming goes. It would likely pass.

And are you sure that they can't expand the casino? Are they limited on the number of slots? If nothing else, just making the casino nicer on the level of Riverwind and Hard Rock, and adding a hotel will be a major improvement to the overall experience.

Steve
09-13-2009, 04:09 PM
Here's where the cap currently stands: the Chickasaws can, and will, upgrade the existing games. They can also add 50 more come Jan. 1 as allowed by the compact. But that's it unless the tribes seek to reverse the lower limits on gaming they themselves imposed during negotiation of the compact.

kevinpate
09-13-2009, 04:18 PM
The compact will change. There is little to no reason for any other outcome.
My only question is whether it will change in 2010 or 2011, after the next election cycle.

Midtowner
09-13-2009, 04:38 PM
They'll promise some more money to the schools, and the compact will change. It is even possible (outside shot requiring city leaders and others to cooperate) that the land could be deeded into trust.

I think it'll be a decent deal. Lots of new jobs, an expanded tax base, etc.

My hope is that any new facilities are not eyesores.

I remember going to Remington Park before the casino was put in, and I also remember some people were saying the attendance was down due to OTB at local casinos. Some casinos would not air Remington Park on their OTB sites.

Steve, I am not sure what you meant by "the racinos were placed at a disadvantage at the insistance of competing tribes"?

I went to the race track in CA quite a bit and I always felt Remington needed some serious revamping to draw the attendance up long before they added the casino.

Steve
09-13-2009, 08:08 PM
The disadvantage I'm referring to is the matter of the number of slot machines allowed at Indian casinos vs racinos and the allowance of blackjack at the Indian casinos but not the racinos per the compact. Sorry, I should have been more specific....

Lets hope that they can have full blown gambling soon. This would be a good option for many of us that live in NW OKC/Edmond since we now have a pretty long drive to table games. I can envision one of the largest casinos in OK right here at Remington someday soon.Big poker tournaments and 1st class entertainment.

I don't know about getting the land back, but the money will eventually make it's way to the tribal programs... I hope.

It's a double edged sword, if you ask me. There has already been some tribes who did not benefit from the type of shady characters who came to "help" them run the casinos.

The Chickasaw's, like the Citizen Pottawatomie are becoming pretty business savy.

It's important to remember that the Chickasaws did not purchase the land from Magna. The land is leased from the zoo. Magna simply purchased the business and the lease. I am no expert on the subject, but I would imagine that would further complicate the ability to add things like table games.

To quote an operations mgr. of Winstar World Casino while speaking to employees, " We don't try to manage this place, we just try to keep up! " Legally gambling/gaming is a relatively new venture here in Oklahoma, and everyone has to start somewhere.. right?! Because of the emphasis on morality and responsible gaming, the Chickasaw Nation is slowly, but surely growing into what will eventually be a true Destination for those looking to have a close-by get-away. No, it isn't Vegas. But what OK/TX business would want to have the stigmas of Las Vegas attatched to it? Not one. Winstar World Casino is an ever-evolving, growing (and more importantly) a learning enterprise. The 'Nation' doesn't believe in debt. With that comes a certain slow, but sustainable growth and development. Pay-outs are nationally considered top-notch. In-so-far-as being a glorified bingo tent, YES, it has a humble begining, but it is responsibly transforming itself into much, much more. Not everyone is a winner, that's why it's called gambling.

CuriousObserver

Vegas will still be Vegas, lol. These places fit into different categories. Some want to pay for plane tickets, cabs, hotels, etc... While some just want to spend the evening or weekend away a short drive on the interstate.

They are doing a very small remodel at the casino but thought this floorplan of the games area was interesting.

It's pretty darn big and I know they operate at the very limit of what their agreement with the state allows, and that limit has been raised a number of times. They advertise 750 electronic games.

I was also told they run the bare minimum of races to be in compliance with that same contract. They make all their money from the casino.

I know it’s not currently allowed but if they could ever somehow find a way to add table games and a sports book…that place would instantly become less depressing.

06-07-2023, 10:35 PM
That’s probably the best possibility of an OKC proper casino. It’s pretty slim possibility, but more probable than a downtown casino that some dream about. It’s always easier to amend a current facility than to allow something completely new. That would honestly not be a bad thing because it would keep the anti-casino crowd at bay since it’s away from downtown (family friendly - ironically across the street from the largest family friendly draw in the state).

A tribe run resort hotel would be cool if they were ever able to expand the gaming floor and permitted games.

I sure wish they would increase the number of races and events that use the track more. The casino part is very cramped and dingy in my opinion and looks sad. Does the city or state governments need to hear more of the citizens' voice to get table games and sports book added? Does the commission just say that they are permitted and poof it happens?

It's part of an agreement between the tribes, the horse industry and the state. To add table gaming would require changes to the compacts with the tribes and seeing how Stitt is with the tribes, isn't going to happen.

Right.

The Chickasaws have lobbied hard and managed to get the number of games increased more than once, but no luck with table games.

Stitt will be out in a few years and then maybe we'll see some changes.
