View Full Version : Psalm 139:1-16

Luke

1 O Lord, you have searched me and known me!
2 You know when I sit down and when I rise up;
you discern my thoughts from afar.
3 You search out my path and my lying down
and are acquainted with all my ways.
4 Even before a word is on my tongue,
behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.
5 You hem me in, behind and before,
and lay your hand upon me.
6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
it is high; I cannot attain it.

7 Where shall I go from your Spirit?
Or where shall I flee from your presence?
8 If I ascend to heaven, you are there!
If I make my bed in Sheol, you are there!
9 If I take the wings of the morning
and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
10 even there your hand shall lead me,
and your right hand shall hold me.
11 If I say, “Surely the darkness shall cover me,
and the light about me be night,”
12 even the darkness is not dark to you;
the night is bright as the day,
for darkness is as light with you.

13 For you formed my inward parts;
you knitted me together in my mother's womb.
14 I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.
Wonderful are your works;
my soul knows it very well.
15 My frame was not hidden from you,
when I was being made in secret,
intricately woven in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw my unformed substance;
in your book were written, every one of them,
the days that were formed for me,
when as yet there was none of them.

Just because.

That is a bibilical passage frequently cited to establish that unborn children have souls and are worthy of protection.

It seems like that if were an important issue to God he would've had one of his writers just come right out and say it. Kryptic is cute but it sure causes problems among the sheep.

Edit. I just noticed that this is pre-Christian. Jesus never referred to this, did he?

I don't think anyone claimed this was New Testament stuff.

I'm not Christian but I still respect them. Too bad there is so much intolerance out there. Cheap shots for what reason? Take out the Christians and what are we left with? Scary times, is what. There go the religious non profits, many of the hospitals, many of the groups who support the poor in foreign nations, religious schools, etc., etc. Speaking as a woman, I don't like how a lot of the Christian faith treated women, historically. That being said, I'd take it over many/most of the other religions out there.

Eco, I was more or less ribbin' on Luke for sticking that up with no explanation. Some of my favorite people in the world are Christians. Of all the religions out there it is my favorite, too.

> sticking that up with no explanation.

Well, 'Just because' seems like it qualifies as a reason. Perhaps Luke had a specific reason and muted it, or perhaps one takes at face value it was 100% 'just because' or perhaps it was meant for someone specific to see, and Luke was just the delivery guy.

Also just because.

Heh heh. Nothing cryptic about it.

I just read it yesterday and honestly (coming from a Christian's perspective, obviously) it was reassuring to me that no matter where I go, no matter what I do, no matter what is happening in life, God will always be with me.

I figured I'd post it here in the Faith and Values forum in the hopes that those who share my beliefs might feel some encouragement from it.

That was it. :)
