Friends of my daughters have opened a new BBQ restaurant on N. May just south of Wilshire. The couple who own it formerly lived in Texas and operated a successful BBQ place there before moving back to the OKC area to be near friends and family.

I have had ribs, brisket, sausage and smoked turkey so far, along with their beans, slaw and potato salad. I can safely say that their meats and sauces are as good as I've had in the past 30 years or so (since Pulliam's ceased business).

Go give it a try. I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

We live in the neighborhood and saw the place go in. We'll have to go try it. We drive up to Edmond and eat BBQ at Billy Sims.It would be nice to have someplace closer that we like.

Yep, in the old Pizza Hut building. I absolutely love BBQ - I do some at home that I think is really good - and I know good BBQ - THIS IS EXCELLENT BBQ!!!

I was just going to make a thread about this place. I think it's great. The jalapeno sausage is the best thing on the menu in my opinion and their hot sauce is better than any other local BBQ sauce.

We ate there tonight for the first time and were quite impressed. I had a brisket dinner and my son had the chicken dinner. Both were very good and the BBQ sauce was thick and not watered down like so many places. We took some brisket to my husband and he loved it too. We live in the neighborhood and have been driving to Edmond to eat BBQ. Now all we have to drive 12 blocks. I promise, we'll be going back often. It is located at 7801 N May for those not familiar with the area. You ought to go try them out sometime. It is very casual dining at a good price.

I am hoping they expand their side orders. They need to add some really good beans and maybe salads. I don't eat sausage, so that isn't something I would eat.

We ate at the Chop Shop last night, and it so good. I am getting addicted to the cream corn. I always get the chopped brisket dinner, and no longer find the need to travel to Edmond for BBQ. The people at the Chop Shop are very nice.I think that if anyone tries it once, they won't go anywhere else.

I finally happened to make it to the Chop Shop today for lunch and will offer my personal review. Keep in mind that BBQ is an opinion and I smoke food 4-6 times a month and feel like I do a pretty good job.

I had the 1/2 sliced brisket dinner with beans and cream corn.

The cream corn is a must have. It is one of the best cream corn I have ever had. This is all I can say about them.

The beans were good. They were different than you normal BBQ baked beans that you get a local BBQ joint. They were a little sweet for my preference (to much BBQ or Brown Sugar baked in). Even though they were sweet to me I would have no problem getting them again.

The sliced brisket was beautiful to look at. Had a deep smoke ring and a nice looking bark. The brisket was definetely smoked (almost to heavy but not quite) unlike many of the local joints that I swear must use an oven to actually cook their briskets as they have very little flavor. It was sliced nicely and looked good but overall it was a little dry. I think this will be a problem with the majority of people that don't know oven baked soaking in beef broth from true low and slow.

The sauce was very good as well. I ate the hot and although I did not find it that Hot your average person will probably be able to enjoy the hot sauce.

What a great review. I think the relative dryness or moistness of the brisket may depend on when you get there. It's a little delicate keeping it moist while holding it at the right temp. I agree that the sauce is right on. Hot but not so hot as to damage the experience. Got to try the corn! I hope they will bring back the jalapeno sausage. It was good.

Everybody has a bad day, even La Baguette! Give them another chance. The beans and cream-style corn are great sides and their meat-smoking is excellent. I know barbecue and this is GREAT barbecue.

Meet me there and I'll pay if you don't like it.

I'd go back and meet you tonight, but I live in Phoenix. Went there about three weeks ago. Verrry nice people! We got there at 2 o'clock and had the place to ourselves. I had the rib sandwich and slaw. BIL had the brisket. I'm pretty picky about que, but this is as close to mine as I've found. It could use just a tad more smoke in the meat and the sauce was just too sweet for my taste (and also not hot enough). I went back to see the smoker and it looks like it's an Oklahoma Joe's brand (I use a custom smoker from Lang's out of Nahunta, Ga.) I have to say, Chop Shop is far better than Leo's, but please, owners, do something about the decor! It's a rib shack, not a Pizza Hut! Collect some OKC memorabilia, old pictures, warm the place up with something other than rock band posters, and get some comfortable chairs.

(just my opinion)

Regardless of whether everybody & their dog thinks the place is spectacular, RealJimbo does. I know that when I find a place that I really enjoy, I'll pimp the hell out of it to my friends in order to try to help it thrive (especially if it's a locally owned place) because I don't want to see it close. I haven't tried it yet, but I hope to soon.

If you throw Darkstar's pimp it comment and a recent South park cartoon featuring Butters that lampooned ACORN in a blender, 'BBQ' takes on a ho different meaning.

Exactly...I don't expect everyone to like what I like, but I have a big crowd (40-50 people) at my annual 4th of July bash where I am the cook (hot dogs, hot links, hamburgers at noon and smoked brisket and ribs at dinner) and there are never any complaints about the food. I cook to please me and it just happens to please everyone else, too. So following that line of reasoning, if I like the food at BBQ Chop Shop, it follows that most other people will like it too. No biggie if they don't, but they owe it to themselves to at least try it.

I eat and cook a lot of BBQ..I will chime in on pulled pork. Most people and or restaurants cook pork shoulders and or butts for a certain amount of time. To do pulled pork correctly you have to cook to temp.

I did two 9 pound pork shoulders a couple weeks back and one finished at 200deg in 18 hours the other 26 hours. One just have more fat and connective tissue to break down.

I say this because being a BBQ place that is just starting out it would be really hard for them to do Pulled Pork correctly if they aren't selling enough of it. About the only way for them to do it would just do small pieces (2lbs) at a time.

I have eaten at a lot of BBQ places around the country and very few pull pulled pork off correctly. Most will cook for around 11 hours and trim the fat. It isn't that they don't know how to make good bbq it boils down to time and money.

Another example is brisket. A lot of BBQ places steam their brisket and just smoke it in the end and the reason is that way they can keep the meat moist. One very popular BBQ joint that a lot of people on this list rave about steams most of their BBQ. In fact when you stand outside of this BBQ joint you don't smell any smoke!!

Just my 2 cents.

Good comments. You are right about the economy of time concerning BBQ. I do mine at home without any regard to money. I buy the cuts of meat that I like - packer trim brisket, pork tenderloin, pork country style ribs, etc. - and cook it to its maximum best, based on weight and mass.

I cook my briskets - usually 13-15 pounds - by smoking for 2-4 hours then putting in a pan and cooking at 250 for another 4-6 hours. This makes them come out very moist and allows the seasoning (Bad Byron's dry rub) and the smoke to penetrate most of the meat mass. I'll put my brisket up against anyone's.

My pork tenderloins are cooked much the same way but much shorter in duration. This makes an awesome pulled pork that is flavorful, moist and tender.

My ribs are almost always worked in with whatever I am making the main meat, either brisket or tenderloin.

BBQ Chop Shop, as you point out, is limited by what the traffic will bear. I ate there Friday and loved it. My daughters just dearly love their smoked turkey. They say it is "melt in your mouth" good.

My company had Chop Shop cater a general company meeting last week. The food was excellent, hot (except the potato salad) and fresh. One more thing: I had nothing to do with who catered the meeting. I had bought one "sampler" pan of four meats and made it available to the general population of our office in our break room. Everyone raved about it so I got some hand-out menus and spread them around. The rest just happened on its own.

If you haven't been there, you owe it to yourself.

I finally got to try this place today and I'm officially jumping on RealJimbo's bandwagon. This is the best BBQ I've had in ages! I got a pulled pork sandwich, cream corn & a brownie. The pork was really moist & had the perfect smokey taste to it, even better is that it actually has real taste and doesn't rely solely on the smoke. The corn is awesome. I've always loved the creamed corn from Swadley's and the corn here totally blew Swadley's out of the water. Haven't tried the brownie yet, but it smells delicious.

I just now saw this thread or I would have written something earlier. A couple of weeks ago, I was driving up May Ave. toward Homeland (the old Albertsons) at May and Britton, (which is about the only decent grocery store within miles) and saw the Chop Shop and stopped in for a bite to eat. Excellent BBQ! I only had a chopped beef sandwich, baked beans and potato salad, but it was delicious. I would normally go to Swadley's or a couple of other places, but I'm putting the Chop Shop on my list of faves. Great thread.

I went there Wednesday night, the same night the article appeared in the Oklahoman about BBQ Chop shop. They were out of some of their meats because so many people had stopped by that day. I had a combination with hot links that were pretty good and BBQ chickent that was decent. The cream corn was really good and the green beans were adequate. It is not the best BBQ in OkC but it is pretty good. I will go back.

Thank you. Not that I have any material interest in the place, but I know the owners and know that they appreciate your intent to go back.

I heard that they were completely overwhelmed when the story came out and that they had to make some adjustments to their stock. I think they are ready for the next wave. I know I'll be there on a regular basis.

Just because you are interviewed doesn't mean you are going to make the papers or broadcasts. Many times I have known of interviews for "non-news" features that didn't hit the public until weeks later. Some might think that it was not going to run and were not notified about when it might.
