Well, this is a first for me.. I seldom ask for help but I'm feeling really compelled to do so.

Situation... my mom's friend's sister is a Grandma.. she now has custody of a 2 and 4 year old grandchildren because her son is a criminal and can't take care of them. We don't know a lot of details but do know that this is a dire situation.

She can't find work because she can't afford the daycare .. she is depressed, stuck in her apt with 2 toddlers that she is trying to learn how to parent and she is pretty desperate.

Then today, she gets this news.. her son has impregnated someone else and she now has a premature newborn in the hospital and found out they will only release the newborn to the Grandma.

The baby is apparently a preemie and drug addicted (omg, omg), they will be releasing the baby soon, but I know the Grandma is so unprepared for this.. so... here is my plea for help.

If anyone has any baby items that they are not using ie Carseat, Baby Swing or Bouncer/Seat, Crib. Clothes, Diapers. Formula, etc etc and feels compelled to donate them to this family, I, and they, would be forever grateful.

I don't even know if the baby is a boy or a girl but I do know that this Grandma will be beyond overwhelmed and even something as simple as a baby swing or a bouncer seat could make a huge difference in caring for this baby and these children.

I'm so sad about this. I'm going to try to find out more details about the needs of this family and try to help as much as I can, but like I said, maybe I can get some help from someone here as well. Thanks for reading.

A drug addicted preemie. The women would be doing her grandchild a favor to not take it. She is already overwhelmed. If she takes that child, it will end up with dad and/or its druggie mother. Don't take it. Let the little darling go into care. They will place it with a loving family who will probably adopt it. This is about what is best for that little one. The grandma is already overwhelmed and bringing in a special needs preemie who is going to be detoxing isn't fair to anyone, including the other darlings.

I know it is not Karried's call. Sounds like she has already made the decision and Karried is trying to help. What an awful situation. I wish that lady would reconsider before she manages to completely ruin the best chance that child has for a good life.

Thunder thanks so much..... very nice of you!

They will place it with a loving family who will probably adopt it.

Yes, that would be ideal and the way I would think they should go but like you said, I think the decision is already made and they have already committed to taking these kids.... very sad situation... Grandma is so overwhelmed and stressed. No one in that family will come out okay in this situation.

I'll just try to help where I can .... it's the babies I"m focused on..and possibly getting Grandma some relief.. as far as the Dad goes, I could care less if they castrate him tomorrow. He has no business having children.

What I found interesting about this situation, as sad as it is (and I agree with you karried about the so-called "dad") is that the hospital involved "would only release the child(ren" to the Grandmother.

Just a few months ago, an OKC Grandmother was trying to gain custody of her three Grandchildren that were dispersed around the city in different foster homes, while the mom served out a prison sentence. OKDHS told the Grandmother, through that infamous spokesperson at DHS...no way.

Anyways, I do hope this Grandmother does recieve all the help and assistance she will need. The everyday citizens of OKC are great at coming to the aid of those in need.

My husband and I are raising a grandchild. One thing we found out about that we didn't know before, was that there is a program administered through DHS where daycare is free for grandparents raising grandchildren. We have used both an in-home daycare provider, as well as a daycare center and there was never a problem. It has been a godsend to us.

She needs to go after her son's family jewels with a meat cleaver. Ridiculous.

Thank you all. I did find out a little more information this weekend. I'm happy to report it's not quite as dire as I feared. She is getting some assistance through various programs and agencies. It's still going to be a long hard haul for her though.

I'll forward the information to her though on some she may not have known about.

Thanks again.
