GLENPOOL Developers and city officials in this community south of Tulsa broke ground Thursday on a $12 million construction project that will include a three-story municipal building, conference center and two hotels.
The project, at U.S. 75 and 121st Street S in the Southwest Crossroads development, will feature the 57,000-square-foot city building, a Holiday Inn Express and a new Hilton Home2 hotel. Additional retail, entertainment and business park development is planned for the site, said project developer Tapp Development.
"We are truly blessed here in Glenpool, Mayor J. Shayne Buchanan said. "The main idea to take away from our announcement today is that in Glenpool strong opportunities exist, even in these uncertain economic times. At a time when much of the country is confounded by contraction ... we are embracing expansion.
The new complex will provide campus space for Tulsa Community College and meeting space for job fairs, workplace training and other social functions, Buchanan said. "We expect the conference center to attract new visitors, dollars and business functions to Glenpool, benefiting our entire region.
Construction on the hotels will begin in May, said James Tapp, president of Tapp Development. The 90-room Holiday Inn Express and the Hilton Home2 hotels will be next to the conference center-municipal complex. Leasing activity on the project is strong, Tapp said, and work is on schedule.
"Weve had four additional letters of intent signed just this past week for space on this site, as we are excited to be part of the growth here, Tapp said. "Were also working on the planned business park which will occupy the space in Phase II of the development.
A 24-hour IHOP restaurant is opening April 7, and a Santa Fe Cattle Co. recently opened. Other retailers and businesses in the area include a 199,000-square-foot Walmart Supercenter that opened a year ago, American Heritage Bank, Utica Park Clinic and a Sonic drive-in restaurant.
The Shoppes of South County, a 16,500-square-foot-shopping center currently in leasing and build-out in Phase I, was designed by Wilbanks & Associates architects. An additional planned 150,000-square-foot retail center designed by the firm will be on the site.
Land for the project was deeded to the city by Monument Trading LLC, said Glenpool Ward 1 City Councilor Tim Fox.
"Our citizens wanted our city to be a full-service community, we listened, and the sought out the right people and companies to help us make it happen.
The project is expected to be completed in 18 months.
