AWARD WINNING ARCHITECTS FEATURED ON 2009 ARCHITECTURE TOUR
.
The American Institute of Architects Central Oklahoma Chapter will host the eighth annual Architecture Tour on Saturday, April 18, from noon to 5 p.m. as part of Architecture Week 2009. Architecture Week is a week long series of events that promotes the important role that good design plays in every community. This year’s Architecture Week is OKC: Reinvesting in the Community through Architecture. The self-guided tour includes residential homes and commercial buildings that have reinvested in the community through an appreciation for architecture and design.

The Hook Home (located at 3101 Harvey Parkway) was designed by Randy Floyd, AIA of Randy Floyd Architects. This residence is an example of unifying modern tastes with a design that met Oklahoma City’s codes for compatible new construction in a historic neighborhood, while addressing a concern for sustainability. The owner of this unique home located on Harvey Parkway, utilized on a rare asset – a vacant lot in a historic neighborhood located close to Oklahoma City’s wealth of attractions. The Hook home is owned by Jann and Terry Hook.

Robertson House (located at 609 N.W. 42nd Street) – The reinvestment in the historic house in an inner-city neighborhood shows the multiple dividends of incorporating new need to an existing house already linked to existing public infrastructure. The client (a writer, local art patron, and history enthusiast) inspired the architect to work with local artists who transformed the structural elements into a narrative of the house’s past and future where the original house and the addition intersect. The Robertson House is owned by Nancy Robertson and the Architect for the project is Kenneth Fitzsimmons, AIA of TASK design, inc.

RR Residence is owned by Worth Ross and Jim Roth and is located at 3940 E. Wilshire Blvd. The sustainable design of this residence located in Oklahoma City?, is based on three noteworthy features: 1) simple, modern design, 2) energy efficient design with materials and spatial layout, and 3) use of ICF block. The investment of research and resourcefulness between the client and the architect created a sustainable residence that will provide many paybacks over the years. Jay Yowell, AIA of jyarchitecture is the architect of the RR Residence. The RR Residence will be under construction for the 2009 tour so attendees will be able to see the design process as it will appear completed as part of the 2010 Architecture Tour.

Velvet Monkey Salon and Residence - This location will be of special interest to the public as it is its second year on the tour. Attendees saw the project by TASK design, inc. and Fitzsimmons Architecture under construction during the 2008 tour and will be able to appreciate the completed project on this year’s tour. This location was originally constructed in the 1920s as the New State Ice Co., which has been the white elephant of the Plaza District for the last three decades. Many people have sentimental attachment to such a landmark building; however, few can envision new uses for them. The owner’s vision and dedication to converting this large warehouse into a business and residence makes for an impressive reinvestment and eastern gateway into the plaza district. The Velvet Monkey Salon and Residence is owned by Estrella Evans and located at 1711 N. Blackwelder Street.

Studio Mid-Del Inc Arts Center was design by Michael McCoy Architects and is located at 1730 Center Drive in Midwest City. The unique design of the nonprofit Center, with curves on the west wall of the center hallway and angles on the east, reflecting the creative and analytical sides of the brain, has generated countless comments of awe and appreciation from the hundreds of people who have visited this facility since we took occupancy in August 2008. This project, owned by Studio Mid-Del, Inc., was selected as an Official Centennial Project and has become a place where groups can come to experience the arts in an informal setting while appreciating the importance of good design.

Central Avenue Villas (located at 444 North Central Avenue) was design by Anthony McDermid, AIA and Zack Woods, Associate AIA of TAParchitecture. This new 30-unit residential project is located in the historic Deep Deuce district and is at the forefront of the urban rebirth of Oklahoma City. It is not only inspired by its context and its historical neighborhood, but also by the exploration of the idea of regional architecture and what uniquely defines Oklahoma Architecture.

The Sieber, owned by Sieber Holdings, LLC and is design by Allen Brown Architects is a wonderful historic rehabilitation project and is the first significant new housing project in the MidTown district of Oklahoma City, which is currently experiencing a major renaissance. The project is comprised of two buildings with a variety of rental units – simple one and two bedroom apartments in the historic hotel building and two story townhouses and commercial frontage “live-work” units in the historic grocery building.

The Lofts at Maywood Park located at 1 N.E. 2nd Street, within walking distance of downtown Oklahoma City, the Bricktown entertainment district, and the revitalized historic Deep Deuce area, the Lofts at Maywood Park offer a uniquely urban opportunity to live, work, and play. Through the use of exterior walkways, sidewalks, and nearby public green spaces, this project promotes a pedestrian friendly environment. The intent was to attract young professionals to this revitalized urban oasis and encourage their involvement in this neighborhood and city. The Lofts at Maywood Park are owned by Triangle Development and were designed by Larry Herzel, AIA, Kevin Bundy, Associate AIA and Andrew Stevens, Associate AIA of HSE Architects.

Tickets for this year’s tour can be purchased in advance for $12 per person by calling the AIA Central Oklahoma Chapter Office at 948-7174 or going to AIA Central Oklahoma (http://www.aiacoc.org). Tickets will also be available the day of the tour at any of the tour locations for $15 per person.
