EDMOND — The name "Sugar Hill” might not ring any bells, but lots of people know the new neighborhood by its landmark.

"Oh yeah, that’s a quick reminder. Everyone knows the buffalo,” said builder Roger Fite, who is getting ready to start construction on a multimillion-dollar home in the east Edmond neighborhood.

The $54,000 bronze buffalo sculpture guards the entrance to Sugar Hill, on the north side of Second Street between Interstate 35 and another landmark, Pops convenience store in Arcadia.

The buffalo sculpture is a somewhat abstract but recognizable version of the real animal.

"It’s different. That’s what we like about it,” developer Barry Rice said. "My wife and I were in Santa Fe and we happened to see a model of a buffalo in a gallery.”

The artist, Gino Miles, later came to stay with them at their farm to check out the site. He was taking a walk when he found an oak-leaf-and-acorn twig and took it back to his studio to create a much-magnified version for Sugar Hill’s front gates.

The neighborhood’s bronze gates are "essentially irreplaceable. They are works of art,” Rice said.

Rice has added other pieces of sculpture, including one of several geese, to the entry of Sugar Hill.

But it is the powerful, larger-than-life buffalo sculpture, which Rice said was partially paid for by the Edmond Visual Art program, that is most noticed by most people.

In fact, tourists from New Zealand and England have been interested in the buffalo overlooking what is old Route 66.

"One German couple I met out there didn’t even speak English. I catch people out here all the time taking pictures,” Rice said.

It’s different. That’s what we like about it.”

The gate is maybe an artistic depiction of a buffalo, post grinder.
