the zoo changed dates on opening date for the new childrens zoo, a lot of entertainment places are doing the same thing, the economy is that bad to where they hold off or stop a project that has already started. I cant wait till the asian themed district opens at the zoo planned for 2011, its going to the the biggest thing the zoo has ever built.

My daughter and I noticed this a couple of weeks ago when we were at the zoo and saw the date change on the signs.

There's a new children's zoo and an asian-themed area planned? I hadn't heard about either.

Wow i just looked at the Asia exhibit, and it is gonna be impressive. They mentioned bringing back elephants and brining in some Komodo dragons! I dont think they have those there. That place should be pretty awesome.

Our zoo is turning into quite a high-quality facility...

Is it possible to expand the zoo? It seem their space is limited, They're putting in new developments in already used spaces. Still no dolphins or killer whales. At least they have an electric eel.

Just my opinion, but I doubt we ever see a killer whale..and I will be even more surprised if we ever see dolphins again.

The asia exhibit looks great. I'm trying to place it in context on the zoo map, but can't figure it out.

Okay I figured it out. This is huge. This shows the area compared to the Great Escape and Oklahoma Trails exhibits.

And Thunder, yes they are expanding the total area of the zoo.

Basically they are taking the older part of the zoo that is outdated and rebuilding it one piece at a time. That enter southern 2/3rds of the zoo was just asphalt paths leading you past animals behind chain link fences. With the completion of the Asia-themed area, almost all of that older area will have been replaced with state of the art zoo technology that meets current standards for animals and has a more appealing aesthetic for the visitor as well.

Really?? I think our zoo stinks. We still go because my son is 5, he doesn't care. It seems like every time we go, exhibits are closed or there is one sickly looking animal in there. You walk 5 miles only to see a one eyed ostrich, a zebra, and 2 giraffe's. Just my opinion, but the zoo really stinks. The Wichita zoo rocks though. lol

True, but those rankings are user based I believe and not from certain criteria per se if memory serves me right. All a zoo would have to do to skew the results is remind everyone to go vote for them on whatever website. We all know San Diego is probably the best no question. I went to KC's once and it was very nice and much larger than OKC's. Miami has a nice one too.

San Antonio's zoo is pretty cool. It's built in an old limestone quarry.

When I visited the San Diego Zoo many years back, it made me miss ours. It was way to "Disney"ish for me. I used to go to our zoo just to sit on my favorite rock. My kids knew all the back trails, they practically grew up there. And this was way before all the new, great exhibits we have and are in process of. It was back when you could "sneak" in by the docent building. But I was a docent, so I could get in free anyway.

I used to bring carrots for the elephants, and they would stretch their trunks across the moats to receive them. Once on a behind the scenes tour, Judy was entending her trunk in my purse rummaging for cigarettes. They loved tobacco. The elephants have always been among my favorites and I'll be glad to see them back.
