OKLAHOMA CITY – SportsTravel magazine has announced that the 2008 Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon, 2008 NCAA Division I Softball Championships and 2007 USA Rowing World Challenge have been nominated for a 2008 SportsTravel Award. Also nominated is the USA Softball KFC Bound 4 Beijing Tour which included a stop in Oklahoma City. Events are nominated and then voted upon by readers of SportsTravel, the sports world's event magazine.

“These nominations acknowledge Oklahoma City’s ability to host major sports tournaments and events, and honor the quality of our growing sports market,” said Mike Carrier, President of the Oklahoma City Convention & Visitors Bureau. “Our city is developing a strong reputation across the country as a prime destination for all types of sporting events.”

Criteria for nomination and voting include superior organization of and attendance at the event, a superior experience for the competitors and/or spectators at the event, and how the site or venue served to enhance the event. With support from the business community, warm hospitality and numerous activities for participants and fans, and premier venues such as ASA Hall of Fame Stadium and the Oklahoma River, Oklahoma City is quickly becoming a major player in the sports market.
"Since the location of the event is a major part of the criteria for being nominated, the people of Oklahoma City should take great pride in knowing that an event held in their city is being recognized for its excellence," said Timothy Schneider, publisher of SportsTravel magazine, which organizes the TEAMS Conference & Expo. "SportsTravel readers are the leaders of the sports-event industry and they really know what it takes to execute a high-quality athletic event. The SportsTravel Awards program is an opportunity for them to honor their peers and the cities that host sporting events for a job well done."
The ballot includes nominees in amateur, collegiate and professional categories. Awards in those three categories will be given for best single-sport event, best multi-sport or multi-discipline event, and best sports event series or circuit. Voters will also pick best new sports event and an overall Sports Event of the Year from among the nominated events. The 2008 Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon and the 2008 USA Softball KFC Bound 4 Beijing Tour are nominated in the Amateur category for the Best Single-Sports Event and the Best Sports Event Series or Circuit, respectively. The 2008 NCAA Division I Softball Championships are nominated for the Best Sports Event Series or Circuit in the collegiate category, with the 2007 USA Rowing World Challenge being nominated for the Best New Sports Event.

Organizing and executing these events would not be possible without assistance from organizations and volunteers, such as the Oklahoma City All Sports Association.

“Oklahoma City's partnership with the NCAA on the Women's College World Series is a proven winner and this nomination gives us pride in knowing the efforts of hundreds of individuals that assist in executing this event have been recognized and appreciated,” said Tim Brassfield, Executive Director of the Oklahoma City All Sports Association.

Final balloting is open through September 15, 2008. Winners will be announced at the TEAMS 2008 Conference & Expo, October 21-25, 2008, in Pittsburgh. Readers can find more information and vote online at About SportsTravel Magazine (http://www.SportsTravelMagazine.com).
