No, Thunder is correct. The 2 tallest structures represent tails as modeled after the scissor tail.

Don't think so, go look at the architects (Butzer) web page and the tall structures are the wings. This is the mating dance (hence Skydance) arial position of the scissortail, they drop like a rock when mating, all spread out. You can find this 'dance' on wiki.

That's what I thought when I knew Scissortail birds have double tails!

So the bridge is a week old and it is already screwed. That's just great.

I just looked it up, the mating dance, and the body would be what is extended to the south, with the tail split and extending downward.

It's something you have to be able to imagine......

I've seen them do this dance out in the country, they just kind of fall from the sky. Their wings and tail(s) are all over the place. I imagine there is video on it somewhere.

I've heard tell of similar happenings with bipeds in regards to hay lofts and flat rock overhangs near bodies of water. I don't really wanna know if there are videos out there though.

I'm not buying it. I checked his website and it says nothing about a mating dance. The bird is called a scissor tail flycatcher for a reason, and that is because of its double tail. It would only make sense when making the sculpture to put the emphasis on the double tail because that is its unique feature, not its wings because every bird has wings.

I need reminded - is the pedestrian bridge part of the 'core to shore' project -meaning -when you get on the south side of the new I-40 there will some amenities there? OR - is the bridge simply for residential folks to travel back and forth.

Their will be the south 3/7ths of the central park, though I think it ended up in the plan early on because it was already known to be required in building i40 and fits in with trying to connecting the north/south sides of the city center's development that did not really happen with the old i40. They also have plans for another pedestrian bridge over the river directly south of the river.

This is the only thing I can come close to finding about the skydance. Most anything else that comes up in a search is a photo of the renderings or just the birds on a limb or flying.

I still think this is more appropriate representation.

You didn't look too hard - the mating dance description of the bridge starts at the 30 second mark - and the first picture in post #1156 is it....

I need reminded - is the pedestrian bridge part of the 'core to shore' project -meaning -when you get on the south side of the new I-40 there will some amenities there? OR - is the bridge simply for residential folks to travel back and forth.

The pedestrian bridge is actually part of the I-40 project. The federal government required the bridge to be built as part of getting the funding to build the new I-40. The goal of Core to Shore is to recreate traditional neighborhood development in the area where most needs are within an easy walking distance. Having a 400 foot wide freeway definitely makes that task harder and a 4 or 6 lane new boulevard will make it even worse. The City really needs to decide what it wants to do. It can't say on one hand it wants to increase downtown density while at the same time on the other hand dedicating so much space and infrastructure to cars.

So to answer your question, it is supposed to allow residents in the area easy access to daily needs, but we will see if a pedestrian bridge 380 feet long is up to the task. Thunder is probably correct that we will end up with two disconneted areas being shore to 40 and 40 to core and interaction between the two will be minimal at best.

I was hoping that they would set the lights to a multi-color arrangement set on freeze mode, as long as it is not rapidly changing it, like the Duke tower. I actually really like the color combination on that one. Wouldn't mind that being the predominanent color scheme on normal days. It's just that purple and pink and blue go freaking really well on steel structures.

Anyone notice the screens on the underside of the structure ? Is this to deflect any type of lighting glare on the motorists ?

screens occur right at the top of the bridge railing.
I have not been told, but they appear to be to prevent
people from being able to stick their hands in the structure
to re-aim the lights that occur down low and/or vandalize them.
They actually look very interesting.

No. The northern half on the I-40 West side doesn't have a floor. No one was enforcing it. Plenty of people were driving right up to it, walking around. People lined up to watch the fireworks. There was a generator that I assume was powering the lights that ran constantly. Messed up my audio.

Outstanding William - is the walkway deck wood ?

It's not officially open. They're not going to post a rent-a-cop there all evening and night. It's all mud and rocks leading up a hill to the bridge. Then there's this two or three foot deep gap where the dirt meets the metal part of the bridge. Something you don't want to fall into. You just have to pay attention to what you're doing. The wooden walkway doesn't completely meet the sides of the bridge, so you could fall right through that too if you get too close. It's nothing too difficult but I wouldn't recommend disabled people or someone who can't move well to bother. Then there's the northern half that's over the westbound side of the highway that's not finished being boarded up. It's a straight drop through the steel frame underneath. So you can't cross it all the way. I did go over to the Robinson bridge right next to it to get a side shot. It's all pitch dark. It's interesting walking on an unlit bridge where you're not supposed to be.

I wonder if they were just lighting it for the holidays and we will have to wait until the permanent electrical lines are finished before seeing it lit again.

I really like this bridge and the light show on it is really cool. However, it seems to me that with the cables missing, it looks like the bridge is incomplete. Correct me if I'm wrong, but, it appears to only span(the vertical portion) only half the highway.

Thundercitizen

I know it's a sore spot for some, but the structure just needed to be much bigger to have a real impact as an icon, or part of the skyline and put itself into the "world class" category.
I understand there are, as with everything, budgetary issues...I do, however, like what's been constructed.
