View Full Version : Skydance Bridge
Double Edge 12-11-2011, 07:59 PM Apparently you have never built a house from the ground up, changes are a given part of construction.
Apparently, you have no idea what I do for a living nor what my education is, which is just fine. I'm not the subject of the thread.

Nor do I care. (just saying)

That's obvious. Just like your lack of care for facts and accuracy on all of your posts.
Enough!! Back to the subject...
Here are a couple of screen captures from William's video that shows the scale, even with the highest element to come:

Looking Great!, thanks for the photos. Living at Tenkiller, I rely on the pics and videos to keep me updated.
Doug Loudenback 12-12-2011, 07:58 AM For comparison, here are 3 pics merged together to show the development of this bridge. The 1st 2 look west and the 3rd, Will's pic that Pete posted above, looks east.
http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a49/DougLoudenback/i40crosstown/i40bridge_3.jpg
From its angle and more or less vertical orientation, I'm supposing that the arm which points upward is the east-side arm ... it's difficult to tell relative height from the drawings ... note the differences in placement of these arms or wings in the 1st two renderings ... they appear to be reversed.
I like the little upturned tail they added with the final design.
I really do think the open structure is going to look better when lit at night.
Doug Loudenback 12-12-2011, 11:41 AM ^^ Agree with both points. I also think that the non-straight-line top/cover of the bridge's enclosure creating a stretched-out ^ over the north lanes of I-40 is nice, too.
Snowman 12-12-2011, 02:16 PM It seems somewhat odd to me that their is not any structure representing a head
OKCisOK4me 12-12-2011, 02:24 PM I, for one, like the design! Who cares about the functional, structural, conceptual, or visual integrity of the bridge!! Besides this, what other kind of outdoor artwork is there in the OKC metro area? Whether it be miniscule or grandiose, the only things I can think of are a few statues and obelisks downtown, the new sculptures in the MBG, that tall white spotlight that beams into the sky at Stiles Circle Park, anything in Bricktown, the Landrun Monument, and Painted Buffalo randomly placed all over the metro area.
That's the thing about art. You'll either love it or hate it or not even really care about it. At least it's there. Can't wait to stroll across it, even if it's a bridge to nowhere!
OKCMallen 12-12-2011, 02:29 PM Looking goooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooood!
jungmuny 12-12-2011, 02:42 PM two things that I see from the pictures is it is basically oil derrick derived and it will be facing Devon. It seems like they concealed that because there isn't as much westbound local traffic at the Robinson exit as there is eastbound into downtown. So it wouldn't make sense to post a westbound drawing unless you were trying to conceal the fact that this bird is facing Devon. Of course its nothing but a theory
So they aren't completely done with it yet, they still have 1 more wing to put up, correct?
Correct!
I would expect it to be up already or very soon.
Anybody been by there today??
G.Walker 12-12-2011, 03:23 PM Correct!

Anybody been by there today??
Yes, I went around 12:30 pm on my lunch break, and the last wing was not added yet. But there was a lot of activity at ground level. Let me tell you, the new I-40 looks great, I thought I was in a different city for a split second, lol...
I'm going to go by in about an hour so I'll check it out.
mrktguy29 12-12-2011, 04:01 PM The drawings make me think it faces South so seeing it in person it changed my whole perspective. Ready to see the big wing go up.
Bellaboo 12-12-2011, 05:01 PM Correct!
I would expect it to be up already or very soon.

Went by at 4:30, and not even a crane in sight. Maybe tomorrow. I did go by Saturday afternoon and they had workers all over it.
Yeah, I just went by it and it's still not up yet.
jn1780 12-12-2011, 05:49 PM Is that wing onsite yet? I don't see it in williams pictures.
OkieMike 12-12-2011, 06:09 PM Today, I drove from I-44 east on to I-40 east towards downtown and it really was like being in a new city. Everything is starting to come together rather well! Then I drove to the Pedestrian Bridge for the first time and was somewhat disappointed with the size(looking from Walker east at the bridge). Once it's complete I'm sure it will be a lot better, but I was hoping it was going to be larger. It's been a while since I just randomly drove around downtown and I have to say that I am extremely excited about what is happening. Devon Tower/Myriad Gardens/re-done streets/Skydance Bridge/etc. make me very proud to live in OKC right now!
Snowman 12-12-2011, 06:24 PM Is that wing onsite yet? I don't see it in williams pictures.
I think the schedule had it going up a full week after the other wing, so having it on site that much before it is needed would just be make it a large obstacle near all the work.
OKCisOK4me 12-12-2011, 06:36 PM Is the wing too heavy to be lifted by one of those massive helicopters? I sincerely don't see them rolling a 10 ton crane out on the new I-40 concrete!

I didnt know the schedule had it going up a week later. You know how many pieces its composed of?
Spartan 12-12-2011, 07:54 PM Having just seen it personally, the truss bridge doesn't look too bad in person, but the scissortail does look very strange now that it's been reduced to gratuitous ornamentation.

Maybe when its completed, you can hang some shiny Christmas ornaments from it for us!

Like the articles said above, it was supposed to be done Dec. 8th
Thunder 12-12-2011, 09:59 PM I saw it a few hours ago. Not impressive to me. It doesn't look big. Sorry.
clz46 12-12-2011, 10:06 PM Went by around 4:30 pm with my husband and we saw it from the (Walker?) bridge next to the pedestrian bridge. The last wing was laying on the ground with lights on it. I stop on the bridge to look closer and, yep, those where different colored lights!
ljbab728 12-12-2011, 11:07 PM Once it's complete I'm sure it will be a lot better, but I was hoping it was going to be larger.
If you compare the conceptual drawings to the actual pictures you can see that the size of the bridge in comparison to the roadway and cars appears to be nearly identical.

there has been a crane on site for a couple of weeks it was there yesterday ..
and the last "wing" is on the ground on site .. i would expect to see it go up pretty soon
OKCisOK4me 12-13-2011, 09:21 AM That's cool. Haven't been down there or paid attention to the vast array of metallic objects in the pics provided since its a cluster$*!# so thank you for that observation ;-)

Urban Pioneer 12-13-2011, 01:17 PM Looks like the rendering to me. And, I think that the scale is right. IMO
SkyWestOKC 12-13-2011, 01:24 PM Looks good. Thanks for the pics!
OKCisOK4me 12-13-2011, 01:38 PM Looks like that other wing goes over half of the westbound lanes to me!
Honestly, looking at that last pic, this might be a slightly better design. I'm trying to imagine the sculpture with cables, and I think, now, that they would have crowded the space over the bridge. The bridge is a bit industrial for me, but the "bird" has a really nice figure.
Bellaboo 12-13-2011, 03:59 PM It looks good, that last wing did it.
NewUrban5 12-13-2011, 05:37 PM Does anyone know anything about the lighting effects? Did they get stripped down in the budget cuts as well? When they will go into effect?
mrktguy29 12-14-2011, 12:55 AM This is what comes to mind when I see it.

I like the design, but I had a similar thought, though more along the lines of the spider creatures from Starship Troopers

I have yet to imagine a spider, not even while looking at this photo did I imagine a spider but thank you for giving me a 'new' perspective I suppose. LOL
David 12-14-2011, 07:58 AM Been away a few days, so it's been interesting reading the latest few pages and seeing the full structure go up. With just the first wing the sculpture was looking a little small compared to the full bridge, but now that both wings are on it is looking pretty nice.

I was thinking it looked more like a tank trap or a landing ship trap.

OKCisOK4me 12-14-2011, 05:29 PM Personally, I think it looks like an X-wing fighter from Star Wars (I doubt I need to post a pic).

No, you don't Sheldon. LOL
OKCisOK4me 12-14-2011, 05:47 PM No, you don't Sheldon. LOL
Please enlighten me with the Sheldon reference...
Dulahey 12-14-2011, 06:01 PM Sheldon is the main character on the television show, Big Bang Theory. His character is considered a major "nerd".
SkyWestOKC 12-14-2011, 06:10 PM Seriously all the excitement leading up to this project and only two pics of the structure? Anyone want to go out tomorrow and get some different angles?

Thank you. But OKC, I say that poking fun not actually calling you a major nerd. LOL

In fairness, the weather has been crappy until late this afternoon. I Plan on getting new pics as soon as weather cooperates.
