View Full Version : Best places for OKC Urban Exploration?

I would assume that the old Belle Isle factory was great, but it's gone now.

I imagine old theaters or abandoned office buildings would be interesting.

In Shawnee there were some old buildings at St. Gregory's that we used to poke around.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Yeah, and I understand that it's still fully functional! When I officed in that building several years ago, my son took the ride!

i've heard it's best to snag some lunch trays from downstairs to use as a makeshift sled... otherwise it's kinda slow going.

while not totally 'urban', there's the former us marshall's memorial (http://maps.google.com/?ie=UTF8&ll=35.5376,-97.483857&spn=0.002763,0.00376&t=h&z=18) across from the cowboy hall of fame. it's pretty easy to get into and kinda interesting to see this failed monument thing all abandoned and overgrown.

Is the slide still accessible? I would think they'd have closed it off.

I think it is still required for emergency egress.

I used to sneak into the old Contenintal Theater on May and NW Expressway. I could never get up the nerve to go very far into it, but it was cool nonetheless. Those days are over though.

It was when I worked there in 1993. I know before I left TAP they were working on lighting it some way.

I believe there might also be one in the First National Center. Here is more info on the escape slide:

How interesting! I love stuff like that, but had no idea. I'll have to check it out.

There's a lot of remnants of old downtown as well as failed Urban Renewal projects that are interesting.

we used to sneak into the bricktown casket company way back in the 80's -- pre boom era when it was empty and the basement was still full of wood caskets... belle isle thats another story, it was actually pretty dangerous!

I would like to hear of more things to do that are still around. I like to take pictures of old decaying buildings and weird oddity's. Thanks for posting the escape thing.

Was the caket company still in operation? That would really be spooky.

No it was totally abandoned for years and years, all the caskets were wooden ! super creepy! Bricktown was pretty much a ghost town back then, super fun to check out!

Ive not been down there in years, I think its the brewer concert hall now? Back then it was a brick building wood floors that were soggy, the Oklahoma Casket Co. was lettered on the building at the time. according to my google search I came up with this

the Oklahoma Casket Co. 429 E. California
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=429+E.+California+Oklahoma+city&sll=35.465371,-97.504842&sspn=0,359.981976&g=429+E.+California+Oklahoma+city&ie=UTF8&ll=35.466385,-97.509778&spn=0.008773,0.018024&z=16&iwloc=addr&layer=c&cbll=35.465373,-97.504843&panoid=yscwVVwJkPNoV-NCCD91vg&cbp=12,35.70298555326542,,0,5

There was an old hospital located downtown about 10 years ago. I don't remember the name, but it was abandoned after a new one was built. I forgot all about it until I read your post. I wonder if it's still there. If so, this is the kind of place that I was referring to as a site for urban exploration.

Of course in a couple of years Crossroads will be abandoned and we will be able to sneak in there and poke around.

Yeah, you're referring to the old Mercy Hospital. Torn down years ago, now high end luxury condos are going up.

For those who may or may not have been down the slide---

If you had gone, would you have noticed an "old building smell" to the premises? Would the construction of the slide have featured interesting, archaic building techniques?

Also, is it a tight spiral for 300-ish feet?

He meant maybe the luxury townhomes/condos will go up at the old Mercy site. Either way, it's nothing more than a field anymore. It's an Urban Renewal project and this one has already been delayed twice. Urban Renewal doesn't have the best reputation for getting things done on time, nor as proposed. See the Overholser Green thread in OKC Metro Area section for more info.

Also, apparently you haven't been in that area in while. I highly encourage you to do so and see the renaissance that has taken place along Walker and also around the roundabout in front of St. Anthony's with Grateful Bean, Plaza Court bldg. and St. Anthonys. You'll be impressed with all the new infill.

Just watch out for bums, crack ho's and neer do wells. If you have a CCW, it would be wise to excercise your rights.....

Just sayin....
