State Rep. Terry Hyman, D-Leon, died on his Love County farm Friday when his tractor lunged forward and rolled on top of him, according to the Oklahoma Highway Patrol.

He was 56.

Sometime Friday, Hyman got off his tractor and was standing beside it when it lunged forward and knocked him to the ground, said the patrol. The brush hog, a heavy-duty rotary mower, rolled on top of him.

Hyman was able to pull himself out from underneath the brush hog before succumbing to his injuries, said the patrol. His body was discovered about 10:20 p.m.

Democratic House leader Danny Morgan said he was shocked to hear of Hyman's death.

“He was a quiet and steady legislator,” said Morgan, of Prague. “He had respect among all of the members out there, both Republicans and Democrats.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with his family,” Morgan said today.

Hyman, a former Love County commissioner, was seeking re-election to House District 49. He was first elected in 2004.

He was unopposed in the Democratic primary and was considered the favorite over Republican challenger Sean Oliver of Madill in the November general election.

Services are pending with Alexander Funeral Home in Wilson.
