Thinking about old Southside things ....shouldn't admit this but Prunepicker told me to....I used to date a girl in Del City.....Her mother told me one time that the girls other boyfriends brought her (the mother) flowers.....Went to the cemetery that night.......you can figure the rest.......I thought it was funny....so did the mother....Police....No sense of humor at all.

Anyone remember wearing puka beads, bell bottoms, silky shirts, high heeled disco danny shoes!

And then the big puffy goat roper down filled coats for the life of me I cannot remember the name of them during urban cowboy days!

That dang john travolta sure set the trend for what we all wore back then sheesh.

How about hi-jacker shocks and cherry bomb pipes 'O GOD WE WERE SO COOL"

That dang John Travolta sure set the trend for what we all wore back then sheesh. It sure affected the prices of western clothes. The hats I had always paid $7-$15 for jumped to $70-$100 overnight and my last leather slicker (I can still wear it...) cost over $400, and that was on sale and marked down from $600.

I was the first long hair in OKC and took a LOT of abuse (beat up a few times and threatened a LOT.) Then I started selling the clothes that went with long hair and started converting the rest of you. Life got easier when there was more of us. Honestly, though, when the disco regalia came in, I ditched out on selling clothes--felt guilty, ya know. BUT, I never cut the hair off so I am the stereotypical old hippy dude. It's been decades since anyone other than my wife has beat me up. Life is good. What I never had was a stereotypical hippy van like yours though, '78. All I had were old Karman Ghias and ugly Ford pickups--not kool. :Smiley259

Does anyone remember the 53 or 4 chevy that had two front ends. The only place I ever saw it was on Commerce. It gave one pause...so to speak.

I took some pictures (35mm slides)of it and talked to the owner/builder at a couple car shows. I tried to find the slides a couple years ago, but couldn't locate them.

Hey, Frisky, since you and a few others seem to be Corvette guys, I was wondering if any of you ever knew Wayne Fleming and whatever happened to him. I ran into Jim Stewart a couple of years ago and he was doing metal art and made a fireplace for the place I was working on. He is still a heck of a nice guy. I met him in the 8th grade at Grant before he moved to the CH district. And speaking of Jim, whatever happened to Foy Smith?

O.K. first of all...No I didn't wear the stylish Urban Cowboy clothes....During that time, i was in Texas and wore them to work the cattle you guys ate...Riding a horse was work to us then.....Next I really thought you said Pee Wee Herman was your idol '78. But, it's been so long since you and the Mrs. came to a meeting I must have gotten you mistaken with Prunepicker. The '56 checy is STILL ALIVE....Gary Rowland's Grandfather had the car built and Gary has it in storage now. My wife (class 0f '66) had the car at their last class reunion...still in the same great shape it was in. Corvettes? Jim Stewart still has a 60-61 that he is rebuilding right now.....Don't know what happened to Foy it's been forever since I even thought about him. I have sometimes thought that Stewart was red/Gen. He does custom metal grilles for trucks and cars and yes, he is still as creative as he ever was. Can't wait to meet you guys this Saturday. Gave up a Pheasant hunting trip for this Sat.....See ya next time.

The first time we met (think in August) Channel Nine had a reporter watching this thread...(Dances with Cameras) and they did a segment about people from different age groups and different walks of life we having a good, clean, fun time. Then it was broadcasted on the internet. I'll go through the thread and try to find it for you and you can watch it...It was titled the South rises again I think....We have a good time, there's not as many people involved as before but we've had over 20,000 views. An old Grant graduate (TeriOKC) turned traitor and moved to the north side started the thread just trying to stir up some southside things,,,,,and the rest is history......

Hey now...no Southside traitor here...just a relocator. :dizzy:

And...I'm actually a CHA graduate - that's Christian Heritage Academy, class of 1978. When I went there it was at Sunnyside Baptist Church on SW 48th. My sisters (USG classes of '63 and '64) went to Grant, but when bussing came along they changed the district and I would have gone to Capitol Hill. My sisters couldn't stand the thought of that so I went private.

Guys, I'm going to try my darnedest to be there on Saturday. I will be hard go miss - probably the only late 40-something with braces. :beaten_fi

I was the first long hair in OKC and took a LOT of abuse (beat up a few times and
threatened a LOT.)

I hate hair cuts. I was in that era, too. Got in trouble a lot with teachers and
cowboy types.

I was a rock 'n' roller in the 70's but never did the disco thing. No hair cuts for
years :)

Now I can't find my hair. Prunette insists on hair cuts so I don't look like a dork,
or more dorkier.

Generals64
12-11-2008, 08:48 PM
during that era even the rednecks wore their a little long. Mine was longer than usual and one day my dad introduced me as one of his daughters....My horse even laughed.......got my redneck haircut back the enxt day....we were wearing boots when exotics cost 40.00 a pair. I don't tell my wife wha some of my boots cost now.....See ya'll Saturday.....

Yes, Angel27, there is a good chance that was me. I had gone to Europe in the summer of '63. In London I saw guys with jeans and jean jackets with long (usually blond) hair. When I asked I was told they were farm guys in for the weekend. Because I had a double cowlick I decided that that was how I wanted my hair. I had been back 6 months before I heard of the Beatles and Carnaby Street. I'm sure it took til the summer of '64 before it was long enough for a ponytail. And my parents did shop at Jim's in Mayfair and I still lived with them during the summers. Hope I didn't scare you too badly. I'm still looking for those who kicked the crap out of me, though. If only I could remember what they looked like.

Sorry guys, WRONG Twitty. The Twitty that own the storage facility are still alive and kicking. The ONLY buildingConway Twitty (Harold Jenkins) had built and owned is now a monument company building on the east side of Western on about 72nd st. If you looked from above the building and the awning made a C T....The Twitty's that own the storage used to have a boat and boat repair shop. There was (he's still around) a son, a mother and a Dad.
