Oh Yeah, I have been looking for old yearbooks to get the answers of all the shop teachers....try to get them done tonight. However, I am looking for a 1958 Redskin Year Book or 1958 U.S. Grant Yearbook for a friend of mine if anyone has one for sale or trade.

Funny story about Ronny Kaye, I was working at Jack Clark crysler and plymouth when his wifes car came in on a wrecker with all the widows broke out and dents all over the car. We thought it was hail damage, apparently Ronny got pissed off at his wife and beat the crap outta the car with a hammer or bat I dont really recall.

No, Pat Molitari (sp) was the main female dancer on the show. About 6 of the couples of the show were actually on contract with Dick Clark because of their popularity.....I can't remember the guys name but he was always a Greasey Duck Tail kind of a guy. Remember the Ducktail Haircut....or a "Boogie" how about Wdges...I'm sure you had a pair and you probaly got them at Levines....Then you probably had Continental and Horseshoe taps on them...Got your rear busted once or twice slidding down the Grant Hallways.....Do you remember what Huffman did before he was a principal? The Big Dipper is still in use in (I think) Ohio at a small amusement park. If you go out to Frontier City at their Roller Coaster there is a picture and the entire story about The Big Dipper. I don't remember the arcade situation but I sure liked going in there and in the Fun House...Remember the sack slide? and, how many times did you just stand out front to watch the girls dresses get blown up?...I heard the train ended up in someones personal collection....Did you ever soap down the tracks and watch the wheels spin and the train go nowhere? It was "funny" until you got kicked out of the park two hours too soon.....and you had to wait outside until your mom came and then you couldn't tell anyone.....

There was a theater on N. Hudson, just south of 12th, called the Uptown. At one
time there was the Overholser Oprea House on either Main or Grand Avenue (now
Sheridan).

Does anybody know when Grand Avenue was changed to Sheridan?

Nope!! All rumor on the Big Dipper still existing!! It was dismantled in 1983 by a couple of home builders just to get the lumber. It collasped on them and they were nearly killed but were able to escape. The Arcade was a "Ballroom" originally called "Fairyland" and later changed to the "Casino Ballroom." You didn't answer me on the "Train." It was crated up and shipped to Lima Peru, my uncle worked there at the time (1983) and help send it a packn' and watched the "Big Dipper" come tumbling down.

What are some of the businesses or careers that have either vanished or
are near extinction?

Here are some that I've been thinking about.

1. Dairy farms.
2. Fountain pen, lighter and watch repair. There used to be a man in the
Municipal auditorium that did that for a living! Try that now! Although watch
repair isn't out, yet.
3. Fuller Brush man. Some people went their whole life selling Fuller brushes.
4. Shoe salesmen that knew how to fit you. Does anybody remember the days
when you'd have 9 on your right foot and an 8 1/2 on the left?
5. Sign painters.
6. Telegraph / telegram delivery.
7. Peddlers, similar to Fuller Brush. Jewel Tea comes to mind but there'd be
guys walking the neighborhood selling everything.

There must be a million others.

Well, it looks like the old southsiders are slowly regressing into their shells and not remembering the good days and good ole times. I know that someone out there in Cyber land has stories that would make all of us remember things that maybe we should or shouldn't want to remember...If you have to surf the Web (whtever that means) to get the answers then get after it...My old times memories were pretty cool....You guys have posted some of the best laughs I have had in a long time.....I still remember the dirt roads on the southside, the Danes at Schoo, (Howdy week)....Rainbow dances....getting our butts beat in football but still enjoying it. I remember the Friday Night after Kennedy was shot the band had to perform at Capitol Hill Stadium...Everyone was so somber that you could cut the air with a knife and then it seems as though we pulled together as a school and knew that we had been part of History and that we really didn't know what to expect with this place called Viet Nam. However, many of classmates served over there and some gave their all but, that's what the Southside of OKC was about.... We began to relive our lives and do the things that teenagers do in their lives once JFK was put to rest. Dates, Cokes, Drag Races, Football, and all the other school functions. I remember the class of '64 gave an organ and the big thing was whether or not we were giving a Male or Female organ...Get it?????Then the class of '65 started something called "WOB" never have figured that one out. Then we began to reminisce about the future....The least likely succeeded and most likely didn't. The ugliest became the best looking.....What stories are still left out there buried in the backs of the minds of a bunch of Old Southside Ruffians????Share them with the rest of us even if we have to go and look them up somewhere else...See ya next time:.................

All right, let's dig through the cobwebs and see if any of this rattles and cages. I'd like us to reach 15,000 views before the South goes back to sleep. This thread has been phenominal (sp) in the short time that it began. See if any of these work for anyone.
1. Remember (if you can) the snow that came in the early fifties and the sixties and yet school was never let out. How many Snow forts were built and how many rocks were put in (accidentally) snow balls during the snowball fight.
2. When all the old shopping centers were around, No one dared to put out Christmas decorations until Friday after Thanksgiving. I remember the good old time and a half if we work on Thanksgiving afternoon....made 90 cents an hour then...(after time and a half).
3. What did you pay for your first driver's license????not you guys that bought yours at the local Wal-Mart
4. Do you remember the paperboys on their Mustang motorscooters and Cushman Eagles?? Gosh, I wanted a cushman so bad....broke both arms (two seperate accidents) on another guys scooter...didn't really need one.
5. How late on New Year's Eve did you stay up (Really) and listen to the oldies from the previous year? Tried to stay awake the next whole day...duh ...how dumb can you get.
6. Remember the pony pictures Everybody had to have made? Still have mine (hidden of course.....) I convinced the guy to let me ride the pony...he told me that for every kid I got to line up for their picture I got to ride the pony one time around the house. There were 5 girls that lived next door.. and the other side there were six kids...you got it, I told them I thought he was giving away pictures.....(He might have been).
7. How many of your parents HAD to plant a garden? I think it was to show us the correct procedure to use a chopping Hoe....For you younger guys...It's not the same kind of hoe you're thinking about.

Come on Southside. There's got to be a few more stories out there.....

Remember prior to the days of The Country Club Drive In and across the street where once was a Tastee Freeze and Southwest Ford. Years before that it was a "Watermelon Stand" where they had big coolers with cold watermelons floating in water with pick-nik tables with salt shakers everywhere. They would cut you whatever size you wanted. That location and the one at 44th and Portland were the two most popular ones. They still have them just north of Rush Springs on Hi-way 81, also the "Chief Drive In" Theater is still operating in Chickasha, just off of hi-way 81.............................

Generals64

Man, I had forgot about the watermelon stand and I knew the Tastee Freeze was there. When the people that owned Country Club got mad at you, then you just went over there to hang out until they weren't mad anymore >>>(burning rubber was not good). I remember when Southwest Ford first went in I drooled over a Mustang then, the Mach I came into play and I though my Corvette (1965) could out run any of them....A friend of mine Mach I 390 and he proved my theory was WRONG.....Corvette in it's class was alright, that 390 left me like I wasn't even there.
I was thinking about old memories on the southside when one just hit me...Remember when Gas was $ 2.19 ?????...Duh...Thanks Red/Gen for not leaving me here by myself.

Corvette's have been my car of passion. I have had 18 over the years my favorite was a 1987 Convertible that Don Bennett had built for his wife and she just got tired of it. Jim Stewart (an old friend of mine) had a '61/62 that I really like and talked to him about buying it....His wife said NO. My last one was a numbers matching Black '63 and just had to sell it. Answer to your question....If you get a chance there is a guy in Purcell that seems to come across quite a few of the older models. I see if his has any builders next week. Jerry Anglin has 10 or 12 of them in all stages of rebuild. The first weekend in October there is a big rally in Eureka Springs and, there is always some cars there for sale. I'll really get on the look out for some and then you can go and investigate. Oh yeah, Knipplemier ALWAYS has some in the Brown barn. You just have to talk to Knipplemier himself....and they are for sale. Some very Pricey...others not as much. I know I'll get another somewhere in the '92-'95 Convertible era. Just like the way they drive and ride and they are affordable. See ya next time:..........

When I had only been married a few years, I bought (from original owner) a 360 horse '65 Corvette Convertible....Paid $ 3,500.00 for it and let my wife drive for a driver (dumb huh?) The thing had so much Torque that she got mad one day and jumped on it and after 3 donuts in the parking lot she go it turned off and the tears began to flow. She did however keep Ethyl in the tank she paid .29 cents per gallon...It got around 20 miles to the gallon....Wonder why those cars get such mileage and the others don't. I had a '92 conv. and it average (on highway) 26 miles per gallon. I have gotten off southside track but, I had one awesome ride to drive up and down southside streets.....I always wanted a black '62....Got close.....

In 1969, there was a major snow storm i the OKC area. Stores, roads, businesses were all shut down. My wife' little sister and some of their frineds were out messing around and got caught in it, they spent the night (along with many others) in the TG&Y at S.E. 44th and Bryant (the manager that stayed there also was David Green (Hobby Lobby). the phones were out, it was a mess...My mother-in-law panicked and my Father-in-law and I were told to go and look for them...OKC???. Anyway, away we went...Got caught in it ourselves and spent the night in the old Unit Parts warehouse on S.E. 59th st.... Played Poker all night and then when the Snow Plows (road Graders in OKC) came through got to go to work.... Got home and guess who had alaready gotten there? Yep, the sister-in-law and friends we about froze to death and Green set up tents in the aisles of the store for his customers.

Does anyone remember much about El Charrito Restaurants? I remember going to the one downtown and eating the Juarez special...I think it was $1.99 or some ridiculous number like that.....How about the Kip's Big Boy on 59th st. They had really good Onion Rings...Sheri's diner is about the only one around here that make them that good anymore....How about the Grapette?....So many things have come and gone.

We used to eat at the one on S. Robinson. It was incredible. Jorge was the

I always got the enchilada dinner. I think it was called the Explorer? The

Dad would take his employees to the one in Paseo. Then there was the

This may have been brought up before.....but does anyone remember where the "Twilight Zone" was?? I remember driving through a neighborhood but don't remember where it was. One of my friends thinks it was in (or near) the Gatewood neighborhood. And if you do remember.....what was so scary about it?

Carey Place across from OCU on the NW 23rd. It's in the Gatewood edition.

East on NW 23rd, from Penn, it's Virginia, Indiana then Carey Place.

I've been driving through it to get to work at the Lyric on the Plaza.

Thanks!! Me and a friend were on Carey Place yesterday for the Gatewood Historic Home and Garden tour....and she made a comment that she thought this street was the old "twilight zone" street. I guess she was right! Do you remember why we called it that back then?

Because it's supposed to be haunted. The Twilight Zone inspired many
weird legends, hence the nickname. Also, the architecture is remarkably
different from that in the surrounding area. Obviously the builder, Jess
Woolf, had an attraction to the Mediterranean and Spanish style.

There are many rumors about the area, too. Probably all legends.
supposedly a little girl was murdered and her ghost walks around. I
remember some old people who walked around in long coats no matter the
season.

Being a few years older than you two, I can remember going through the "Twilight Zone" area because they said that the people wouldn't come out after dark and that it was nothing to see them naked through their windows. Well, young and excited away we went. And, low and behold the first time we cruised through there there was a lady standing in front of the window with nothing on. This was to be the only time that happened though.....Do you remember the place called sleepy Hollow? Not the restaurant...but, out on S.W. 149th...Good place to take your date they got scared and got close....

Something else, where is Camp Kickapoo located? Old mind is trying to get into another gear...How about when everyone rented Honda motorcycles? TG&Y rented them for a while until people started getting hurt and wrecking the bikes....Always wanted one but my dad always said no....Got on a Cushman twice..broke my arm both times....don't need a motorcycle....rather ride a horse. See ya next time:.........

In the 60s my Boy Scout troop planted about a million trees in Camp Kickapoo. I wonder if any of the trees grew?

Well, curiosity got to me to quickly today. I drove out to Camp Kickipoo....doesn't look like I thought I remember it to be. Went out there several times as a Cub Scout but man, that was a long time ago. You know we've talked about Southsiders....Did any of you know that a Grant Graduate (class of '64) is the defensive Coach for the Miami Hurricanes? Billy Young is in the big game it looks like...

They grew Frisky, long tall and proud they grew. Cedar is again (still?) trying to overtake all other forms, as is all too typical in our state, but rest assured, your tree planting efforts back in the day have provided ample shade and ground cover for Scouts and leaders for many years.

I grew up during the mid-70s and early 80s, in a little house, set back off the road, on SW 119th, between Penn and May. The house was sold in the late 80s and it is now the little retirement patio homes sitting in front of Fisher Elementary school. I think they are called Autumn Leaves.

There was absolutely nothing out there, even during the early 70s and 80s. The area that Fisher Elementary is on, was just farm land. We had barbed wire fence going around our little two acres. Just west of us, there were ponds that we would go fishing in. We'd just hop the fence and go fishing. Now, a little doctors office sits there - I think its a breast cancer office or some type. At night, you could sit outside and watch fireflies and there was little traffic or noise.

I'd also just hop the fence on the east side of our property and cross the creek and would be at Golf Acres where I worked from my 9th grade year until I graduated in '83. If you go into the housing development that was built on the old Golf Acres site, and go all the way to the back part, you can see the original white ranch style house that belonged to the owners. Golf Acres went through at least two owners that I'm aware of - both of which I worked for.

Our addresses were rural routes.

SW 119th was a two lane road.

Village Green was probably upper middle income homes and those are now probably 20-40 years old now.

If you went much further west than May and south of 119th, it was dark and just farm land. It was so dark and unpopulated and hard to see anything that a guy, Jerry Krauss, a senior at Moore High, was killed in a car wreck because a person couldn't see the stop signs due to the high weeds. At least thats what I remember of the incident.

Very different times...Now, I live off SW 119th between Penn & Western. There are houses everywhere, businesses, churches.... great area to live in, but I sure miss the fireflies and all of that farm land and just being able to hop the fence and go fishing.

memories.
