Parks Department to scour Bricktown Canal

January 4, 2008 (OKLAHOMA CITY) - Oklahoma City Parks and Recreation employees will be up to their ankles in red dirt and clay when they begin the arduous task of cleaning the mile-long Bricktown Canal on January 22.

Parks staff will use small tractors, fire hoses and brooms to remove the muck and flotsam that have collected in the canal since its last cleaning in 2006. Pending any weather delays, the canal is expected to be flowing again by mid-February, just in time for a Valentine’s Day stroll.

According to Parks Director Wendel Whisenhunt, the Canal will be drained in order to clean the settled dirt that keeps getting stirred up and affecting the water quality. Periodic cleanings also allow staff to inspect the Canal for damage and perform any necessary mechanical maintenance.

Dirt and debris swept into the Canal by wind and rain are the primary culprits muddying the waters.

The Parks and Recreation Department schedules canal cleanings every two or three years.

"We've picked a three-week period to clean the Canal that would have the least impact on Bricktown businesses, tourism, Water Taxi and the community. As busy as the Bricktown area is, that's not an easy task," Whisenhunt added.

It's funny seeing what all collects in there.

Last time there were multiple patio chairs, a bike, cell phones, etc.

wonder if they'll transfer all the little fishies over to the river or just let them flotsam to death when they drain it
