Laundry plant, jobs coming

Uniform manufacturer UniFirst Corp. plans to open a $9 million industrial laundry facility in eastern Oklahoma City that could create 100 jobs.
The Wilmington, Mass.-based company decided to expand its Oklahoma City branch because its laundry business has grown, branch manager Tracy Caine said. Today, its office at SW 29 and Portland Avenue ships clothing to the company's cleaning facility in Broken Arrow.
"We've doubled our business in recent years, and since our essential mission calls for timely deliveries and responsive customer service, a new plant became an absolute necessity to best serve our customers,” he said.
The new 72,000-square-foot facility near the intersection of Interstate 35 and Interstate 40 will absorb the branch's 25 employees, and the company will hire as many as 100 new workers to process garments for $8 to $10 an hour, Caine said. The operation is expected to begin in September 2008, he said.
Inside the facility, UniFirst employees will do "what you do at home to do laundry, except on a massive scale,” Caine said. Workers will separate customers' uniforms before placing them in mini van-sized washers and driers. Then UniFirst will deliver the clothes to the customer.
UniFirst will host a 3 p.m. ground breaking ceremony today at the construction site, south of California Avenue.
