View Full Version : Building new Computer - ???

With the lightening striking so close to the house, my son lost his computer, so he is building a new one. We lost a wireless modem (2wire - SBC) and a Belkin Router. My new Dell took the surge just fine. Replaced the wireless modem and got a wireless router replaced, already. Upgraded the surge protectors.

He found a lot of good stuff at this site:

Newegg.com - Buy Computer Parts, PC Components, Laptop Computers, Digital Cameras and more! (http://www.newegg.com/)

Anyone have any other suggestions on any good steals or deals?

That's actually where I usually go.

You can sometimes save money if you shop on pricewatch.com

ditto. i've been really happy with newegg... they usually have competitive prices, but they win hands down in customer service. often times the cheapest online retailers have horrible customer service... so you may pay less up front, but if anything goes wrong you're on your own.

How's your power supply? You've got some high powered items in the list. Make sure you get a quality PS (500W minimum). I recently purchased this little jewel. It's rock-solid and quiet.
Newegg.com - THERMALTAKE TR2 500W Power Supply ATX12V V2.0 - Retail (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16817153028)
It's overkill for my current system, but I'm planning for a future upgrade. ;)

I have a Thermaltake PSU as well.. It was pretty quiet when I got it, but these days (about 1 1/2 years after I bought it), the damn thing sounds like a blow dryer.

I bought a Zalman by mistake for my wife's new PC. It'll probably be going in mine. I'll let ya know if it's any better (if you care).

Oh GAWD the Smell!

Antecs are usually pretty good. Very quiet! My only gripe is that they have very fragile hinges on the front which means the doors break off pretty easily.

Thanks Mid I will be sure and tell him that. He has a blue heeler that gets quite rowdy.

I have quite the opposite experience with my Antec power supply. It's pretty noisy. But the case is absolute top-notch. I built it in 2001, and my door is still just fine. This is the newer version of the case I have. (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811129158)

OkieKAS, Click here (http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=P180B-DT&cat=CAS) for that same case you linked to (except this one is black) for $117 or so. Newegg has it in silver for $129.

egads! Geeks has it cheaper! Thanks for the link!

That's an awesome price for that P180 case. The last time I checked on them, they were $169 (for the silver) - even at Newegg. I like the black even better. Buy.com and Geeks.com are similarly priced if you figure in shipping costs.

Kev - Head got all of his stuff in and is constructing his masterpiece!

Check out the rest of his package.

PS: yeah, that really is his HAIR! Last year I sold it on eBay! He said that if I wanted him to cut it,
I would have to "pay him", so when he was gone to S Padre, I listed it on eBay and SOLD it!

 ..nope, I'm not gonna say it. :D

Anyway, that case looks sweet. You're giving me the itch to buy one.

LOL go ahead, say it.......

I have heard it all!

Funny thing about his hair, he always kept it shaved when he played basketball. He was Grady Co Player of the Year (2001) and he played for the NOC Mavericks/Tonkawa. It was in his last semester at college that he let it grow out.

It is just like mine, but I can't let mine grow out. Janis Joplin deluxe!

Hair...hair...beautiful hair......

His computer is radical. I want the red case from newegg.com, but will hang on to my silver one, for now.

Thanks for the humor, I really needed it TODAY!
