Oh GAWD the Smell!

Unless I missed it (I looked), I can't believe nobody has posted this particular topic.

I'm not a die hard beer snob (I like a cold Coors Light on a hot day as much as the next guy), but I am fairly picky when choosing "good" beer.

I'm on a current Irish Amber kick, John Courage is the front-runner. There's also always a bottle or three of Chimay around. For a stout, I'm really liking Mackeson's XXX and I'm also really digging Anchor's Porter.

I'm just wondering what the other beer-type folks are drinking, and see if anybody has some favorite beer recommendations.

I like the one that makes her look the best, the fastest! Remember those ads where with each tip of the beer mug the girl across the table got better and better looking?

Personally, I keep beer in our garage frig for guests. If we have no guests then it doesn't get drank.

I really only like beer in two circumstances...
1. On a really hot day while sitting outside. In that case an ice cold Mexican beer in a frozen glass with lots of crushed lime.

2. At a social event where I need something to do with my hands and don't want hard liquor. I can sip on a beer all night.

Personally, I find most brands are just fine as long as they are surved extremely cold - much like vodka.

I have an entire fridge in the garge just for beer (I'm single :D ), but I don't drink all that much.

But you should have seen the look on my mom's face the first time she opened that door and saw nothing but beer filling the whole thing. I had to show her the dust on some of the bottles before she backed off with the intervention. I've even had beer expire (yeah, that's a little embarrasing). Now she always asks "what's good?" when she's in town, and we'll have a few together. She's developed quite the taste for Paulaner Hefeweizen (of course she likes the stuff that's $12 per six pack).

My favorite's are Boulevard Wheat, Newcastle and Negra Modelo

I will drink just about any wheat beer out there though....One beer I am currently stuck on is Sam Adam's Summer Ale....Perfect beer for this time of year

Another fan of wheat beers, here. I love Boulevard, but mostly on tap--it's not quite the same in a bottle for me. With a big twist of lemon or orange.

Hubby and I found "Cantina" beer at Byron's...it's literally less than $1/bottle, and if you buy a case, you get a free t-shirt! It's kind of like Corona, but with a cleaner finish. It's very good when very, very cold in a frosty mug.

I also like Sam Adams Boston Lager, and Summer Ale. I also enjoy a good German dark beer, as well as Warstiner. I was in heaven in Germany...the only beer I didn't like was Bitburger...the name says it all!

I have a hard time going to Byron's. While they have the most beer in town, their selection really isn't all that great.

I like the liquor store at 4th and Eastern in Moore, next to where Buchanan's (I used to be a stocker there LONG ago *sniff*... good times) used to be. I've not found their equal locally for selection.

Of course, most stores will order almost anything you want...But I'm more of an "instant gratification" type person. I want my beer NOW!

Current favorite has about as much to do with atmosphere as it does with the beer itself. Sitting on the patio at El Parian, big 'ol bowl of chips and salsa especial and a huge, frosty fishbowl full of Pacifico and lime juice. Mmmmmmmmm BOY!

bandnerd

Byron's can usually get whatever you want in about a day. I got KeKe Beach ordered for me once--even ordered it online--and they had it there in less than 24 hours!

It's the closest and least-scary liquor store to my apartment lol. They have a decent wine selection, and the staff is more knowlegeable than you would expect. I'm all for big selections at places, but I don't really feel the need to drive 30 miles to get it, either. I'm too picky, I think ;)

Oh GAWD the Smell!

Think you're picky bandnerd?

I won't go to the liquor store closest to my house (SE 89th and Sooner) simply because I think it smells funny in there. So I drive into Moore for my hops-n-barley.

But if you are up for a little further drive...New liquor store next to Dan Mcguinness on 19th, which has an even better selection

Hey bandnerd have you tried the Flying Dog In Heat Wheat?...Not bad at all

Shiner Bock is from Texas....Well, they say Texas is like a whole other country. So, I guess you could still call it an import.

My favorite beer depends on what type of beer I'm in the mood for.

Just a few of them:

Sweet Stout - Left Hand Milk Stout or Samuel Smith Oatmeal Stout
Belgian Ale- Chimay (Blue)
Hefeweizen - Paulaner
Lambic - Lindemans Kriek
Lager - Red Stripe or Sapporo Reserve (For the most part I consider macro lagers swill, but these are good session brews. No fruit needed)
I also have a soft spot for Sam Adams Boston Ale. For an American macro brewer, Sam Adams is pretty good in my opinion.

I usually shop at Byrons if I'm up north. If I'm just around the house I'll go to Moore Liquor at S. 4th and Eagle Dr. Pretty good selection there and by far the cheapest in Moore or Norman. Plus, I usually get a nice chuckle reading his sign.

chris: Yeah, I realize it's a domestic in that it's made in the USA, but it's typically priced and viewed as an import at restaurants and bars. So is Sam Adams. So that's why I put it in that category, even though I myself (as a Texan by birth) consider it domestic.

I went in that store after stopping by Dan's and checking out the blissful stomach hammering that is their Irish Stew...And was impressed with their selection as well.

But the Chihuahua and I have this rapport now, I'd feel like crap if I violated our mutual understanding of hoppy commerce and our uneasy truce of of "no-bite, no kick".

Freshly stocked last week! Pay no attention to the Shiner cans, I'd never seen them, so I bought a sixer of them :D

My most favorite beer is made at Belle Isle Brewery. It is the ABA (American Brown Ale). It is one of the most wonderful Brown beers I've had. It is one of the lighter of the dark beer family, and it doesn't have quite aftertaste that a Porter has. Sometimes I'll get a little crazy and have a shot of Blonde mixed on the top and it "sweetens* it up in a beer sense.

I like Bass Ale too, but my all time fave is Orval. It's one of the few trappist beers left. (brewed by monks in Belgum) I don't know why but I never grew a taste for Chimay (another trappist beer). Orval is very pricy $6-$7 per 12 oz. and hard to find. It has a very complex flavor, citrus, woodsey, and hopped up. That damned Scott Woolum at Tapworks turned me on to it.

I bought that at 4th and Eastern, and yes it does say "keep refrigerated".

Probably why it tastes like crap. But I never liked Fat Tire (I lived in CO, so it was everywhere), so it's no surprise that I don't care much for their Amber either.

There was regular old Fat Tire sitting right next to it on the shelf too.

Well, I just saw this thread, and thought I'd chime in, although some people will probably hate my input (or ignore it completely).

I just sat down this afternoon to check out OKC Talk with an Orval. Darn tasty, and highly available over here in Belgium. Saw a post somewhere else on the board today about the Trappist Beer known as Westvleteren... might have to take a drive out to the Northwestern part of Belgium, visit the Abbey and see what the fuss is all about.

I have developed an affection for a German Beer named Erdinger while living over here... it's probably my current favorite, as it rings in at just under 6% alcohol; I am not real keen on the 12% beers that are usual big deals around here.

The Belgian cheap beer in this area is called Jupiler... and the 'quality' shows. Every country has their own version of Natty Light...

Even though there is a huge selection here, I am sure that I have barely scratched the surface. My understanding is that there are about 800 different types/brands of beer brewed here in Belgium... but I have tried many local beers that were just slightly better than average, and have even run into some that are way less than impressive (I had a beer with a 'hint' of a chocolate flavor in Brussels known as Phantom that was a real struggle to finish).

Based on the overall quality of the beers I have been able to sample here, it will probably take a few months back in the States until I will be capable of tasting a Bud or Coors Light again... but I will certainly enjoy coming back home!

We're from Colorado too where did you live?

So anyway about the Fat Tire.... Is there a secret room in the back or something?? lol There was none there. I went up and down the isles 3-4 times and when they began to get suspicious that I was plotting something having gone over thier whole store several times I broke down and asked. Again, the guy looked at me like I was nuts and said you can't buy it here in Oklahoma. (Which I already knew)

I lived in Denver from '98 to '01 or so.

Are you sure you went to the liquor store on 4th and Eastern? Because the only people I've talked to in there barely speak English. That's pretty much the only thing I don't like about that store...The only times I've asked for something that they don't have on the shelf, they look at me like I've got a third eye.

But yeah, I pulled it right off the shelf, no secret locations or anything. It was right by the Anchor products if I recall correctly. Opposite side of the shelf than the Erdinger that Rifleman was talking about :D The imports are generally on the side of the shelf in the store that would face the parking lot if there were windows, and the domestics are on the other.
