Default Scam - Phishing

Just a reminder to be very aware on the internet.

" Phishing refers to e-mails that appear to come from banks or other trusted businesses and are used to induce recipients to verify their accounts by typing personal details, such as credit card information, into a Web site disguised to appear legitimate.
"What's happening is that more and more people are actually engaging in transactions online that would generate e-mail traffic that the scammers are copycatting," said Tatiana Platt, senior vice president at AOL."

Don't ever reply back with account numbers, passwords or personal information.. close out the email and go to the homepage of the site in question eg. Midfirst or Ebay etc - you can access messages from retailers this way or the old fashioned way - a phone call. Don't fall for these scam artists.

Another form of phishing involves companies that operate mostly out of central America who actually set up phishing web sites using commonly mispelled URL names that belong to legitimate PC security web sites, such as Norton.

For example, if you mistakingly type in www.symanetc.com instead of www.symantec.com, you will be taken to the mispelled URL made up to look just like the legitimate website, making the user think they are at the right web site. From there, they collect personal information form the user and have a field day.

So, be sure you carefully spell out the URL. Phishing scams get more clever by the day.

I get one or two of these every single day. I used to report them to the firms whose customers were being ripped off, but the volume has gotten to the point that it's impossible to keep up.
