Obviously if an NHL team came around it's curtains for the Blazers, but I doubt seriously this will happen. Because of the overlap of the seasons, NBA and NHL aren't great in the same city unless it's very big and can support both. Even St. Louis, America's top sports city, isn't seen as a great NBA candidate because of the presence of the Blues.
Because of an excellent stadium, probably the best in minor league baseball, I'd say the 89ers...um, excuse me, the RedHawks are safe. |

I will add another scenario to the mix. The ABA has told me they intend to still place a team in Oklahoma City. In fact, they are still in negotiations to finalize the deal. The commisioner says he thinks NBA and ABA will both work here due to ticket pricing (even locally, we had no idea what prices would be at the time), thus giving everyone who has a couple of spare bucks to enjoy a game.
Do you think both leagues can survive here? Personally, it might. Here is how. Home games are played on days the other team is away. Otherwise, the ABA might as well skip the big O. |

There's no possible way both could survive. It's laughable to think it's possible. The ABA is here with the assumption the Hornets will go back to New Orleans. If they stay here, the ABA is dead as a doornail in Oklahoma City.
Ticket prices are far from the only factor, and the Hornets (very wisely) have put their prices as affordable for middle class families. Were they charging $55 minimum per ticket (like the NFL) there'd be a possibility of a team existing as a "cheap alternative" but not with the Hornets selling $10 nosebleed tickets. Another factor to consider is how do they get promoted on the news? Do you really think Bob Barry, Jr is going to be able to get the Hornets, Cowboys, Sooners, small colleges AND some minor league most people never heard of before on the evening news? One other thing to think of...we've HAD minor league basketball here before. It failed miserably. The CBA is pretty much a joke. The idea that a team can exist in the same city, ESPECIALLY a smaller city, as an NBA team is hysteria. They're here ONLY to be the "big show" once the Hornets head back to New Orleans. If they don't, our CBA team will be short-lived. I still have my Oklahoma City Cavalry ballcap. |
