I also heard that Les Miles is taking some of his assistants with him too. As far as Gundy becoming coach, I heard that they were possibly "looking" at him, but a decision has not been made yet. I hope it is not Gundy, because he is such an arrogant jerk.

Looks official... ================================================== ============= Oklahoma State hires Gundy to replace Miles By JUDI BOLAND, Associated Press Writer January 3, 2005 STILLWATER, Okla. (AP) -- Oklahoma State promoted offensive coordinator Mike Gundy to head coach Monday, the same day his predecessor Les Miles was hired at LSU. Gundy was the offensive coordinator under Miles for the past four seasons, helping the Cowboys average 31.5 points per game over his tenure. The 37-year-old Gundy was Oklahoma State's quarterback from 1986-89. He holds school records for career total offense and most passing yards in a game with 429. ``It's been a long ride for me, but this is my New York Yankees job,'' Gundy said. ``At times in our profession, people will tell you you're not supposed to ever let administration know that you're at your last stop. Well, I didn't have a problem with that because I'm so fired up to be here at Oklahoma State and be working with the administrators and the people we have here that I can't hardly stand it.'' After his playing days, Gundy joined the Cowboys' coaching staff as an assistant in 1990 and served in several roles, including offensive coordinator for the 1994 season. He left in 1996 to become Baylor's quarterbacks coach. He joined Maryland the following year and worked with the team's receivers for three seasons before becoming the team's passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the 2000 season. He was a candidate to be the Cowboys' head coach in 2001, when Miles was hired. Gundy was hired days later as Miles' offensive coordinator and has also held the title of assistant head coach. ``We knew we had an outstanding internal candidate,'' athletic director Harry Birdwell said. ``The question simply was, were we going to start all over again and run the risk of losing the momentum that we've gained, or would we try to salvage the core of a great coaching staff and move forward that way.'' In his first three seasons, Gundy built a strong passing game around quarterback Josh Fields and receiver Rashaun Woods. When those players left, he adjusted the offense to showcase 1,500-yard rusher Vernand Morency this season. After a mediocre first season in 2001, the Cowboys have averaged 34.2 points and 402.7 yards per game in Gundy's offense the past three seasons. As Gundy was introduced, school officials learned that Vernand Morency decided to leave school and become eligible for the NFL draft. Despite missing one game with a knee injury, Morency carried 250 times for 1,454 yards and 12 touchdowns during the regular season. He ran for at least 100 yards in each of the first seven games. ``If he feels like this, it's what he needs to do for himself,'' Gundy said. ``Then I will wish him the best.'' |

Actually, I think Gundy will be a better coach. I see OSU's offense converting to a more pass offense when Gundy takes over. After all, he has been the passing game coordinator for several teams in the past. It was always said that Gundy was more of a passing man, while Miles was more of a run-game man. I think OU has shown that a run game is important and can indeed set up the pass, but if you have to choose between the two it's better to start with a astrong passing offense. Just look at Mike Leach's offense at Tech and how succesful it was here and has been there.
Also, I heard that Morency would be leaving as well. Maybe it's good that he's leaving, because I suppose OSU will be relying more on the pass next season. Expect to see Bobby Reid as the QB next year as well. I don't think Gundy will stick with the run and pitch offense. Expect to see a West Coast offense. |

you mean this? ================================================== ============== Oklahoma State RB declares for NFL draft By STEVEN WINE, AP Sports Writer January 3, 2005 MIAMI (AP) -- Oklahoma State junior running back Vernand Morency says he's turning pro because his coach has departed for LSU. Morency said he submitted papers Monday to the NFL making him eligible for the draft in April. The former Miami high school star disclosed his decision in his hometown shortly after Oklahoma State's Les Miles was introduced as the new coach at Louisiana State. ``With coach Miles leaving, I just feel mentally and physically ready to go and make my presence felt in the NFL,'' said Morency, who turns 25 on Feb. 4. ``There's no doubt I'm the top back in America. I said that before the season, and I'm sticking to my guns.'' Despite missing one game with a knee injury, Morency carried 250 times for 1,454 yards and 12 touchdowns during the regular season. He ran for at least 100 yards in each of the first seven games. ``I would say he's absolutely going to be taken in the first round of the draft,'' said his agent, Drew Rosenhaus. New Oklahoma State coach Mike Gundy said he found out about Morency's decision Monday. ``If he feels like this, it's what he needs to do for himself,'' Gundy said. ``Then I will wish him the best. ... ``I'm not surprised about him leaving, because of his age. There's only so much wear and tear that a running back's body can take.'' Morency was limited to 24 yards on eight carries in the Alamo Bowl, which the Cowboys lost 33-7 to Ohio State. Before that game, he said he would return for his senior season so he could keep a pact with his mother to earn his degree. Miles' move changed Morency's mind. ``When the boss man leaves, you don't know where the team is heading,'' Morency said. He declined to say how high he expects to be taken in the draft. ``If a team needs somebody to be a spark plug,'' he said, ``I'm their guy.'' |

I actually think Morency was smart in doing this. He's wrapping up an excellent season from his end of the game......might as well leave while he has the chance. I'mm sure Gundy will maintain the status of the team, but he'll probably be shifting around things a little, as he installs his new system. The uncertainty isn't good for a RB who's destined for the NFL.
I'd argue whether he's the best RB in the country, but regardless, he's still probably making the right choice. I'd imagine OSU will probably have a down year next year with a new coaching staff in place. |
