Frontline buys First Christian Church building

OKLAHOMA CITY – Frontline Church, a rapidly growing congregation with roots downtown, has purchased the historic First Christian Church building at NW 10th Street and N. Robinson Avenue for $1.2 million.

Frontline’s downtown ministry has been housed in Automobile Alley at 714 N. Broadway Ave. since 2006. The congregation has grown to about 1,100 members after beginning in the living room of Senior Pastor Josh Kouri on Easter Sunday in 2005, said David Adair, downtown campus pastor for Frontline.

“We were just praying and really looking for a building downtown – there’s not a lot of buildings downtown for a church,” Adair said. “It was just good timing and God timing. We made an offer and it was accepted really quickly.”

The 52,867-square-foot church building has been listed since April 2010 with Rick Pritchett, a broker with PrecorRuffin. The building originally had an asking price of $1.85 million.

There was interest from several parties to convert the building into everything from an events center to office space, but the cost of such transformations ultimately proved prohibitive, Pritchett said.

“Because of the renovations that would be required, it would be hard to make economic sense of those types of uses,” Pritchett said.

“We felt we were going to get someone to use it as a church-related facility.”

Pritchett combed the area for churches that might be interested in purchasing the property.

Frontline plans to have its first service in the building on the first Sunday in December, exactly 100 years since the original First Christian Church congregation held its first service there.

The First Christian Church building was attractive to Frontline in part because of its commercial kitchen facilities, Adair said. The church has forged a partnership with the local nonprofit City Care to reopen the kitchen and begin meal services for needy people there, he said.

The First Christian building’s gold dome has been a downtown landmark for the past 100 years and sits on a block that was once known as Church Row.

Citychurch, a charismatic congregation led by pastors Richard and Marilyn Hogue, has owned the limestone, neoclassical building at 1104 N. Robinson Ave. since 1992.

Citychurch purchased the building for $580,000, according to Oklahoma County records. Attempts to reach a representative for Citychurch were unsuccessful on Tuesday. The Citychurch congregation has already moved out of the building and is having services at the Lansbrook Events Center at 6009 Northwest Expressway, Pritchett said.

Architect E.W. Van Slyke designed the First Christian Church building, which features an elaborate gold dome, dozens of large stained-glass windows and limestone columns topped with Corinthian capitals.

Or perhaps better, leave politics out of religion and volunteerism for the rest of us. America is devisive enough.

You can see it all just by looking at the videos. That's only a small part, however. Everywhere you look there's work to be done.

We chose to provide an insert with proposed costs broken down into tangible pieces for a few reasons:

Transparency.
Plain and simple. As a church, it is woven into our very fabric to both encourage and require accountability. We realize that ALL of our resources belong to the Lord. Fiscal accountability can in no way be separated from the accountability we receive in our spiritual disciplines.

Visibility.
We felt as though it was important to give you the project broken down in a way that would allow you to visualize our mission, and also to provide context to basic needs that could potentially be overlooked.

History.
Last, we want to record the journey. Being called by Jesus to enter into a long and arduous work with Him can be daunting. In our "Western" frame of mind, we tend to focus on the end goal so much that the sanctifying process of trusting Him along the way can get lost. Our sincerest desire is to be able to see each fulfilled step along the way as provision from our Heavenly Father.

Historic Oklahoma City church celebrates centennial, still centerpiece in revived MidTown community

Oklahoma City's Frontline Church will have to wait a little while longer before moving into the historic First Christian Church in MidTown.

I believe they were copper but had become corroded (or oxidized or however copper deteriorates) beyond repair.
