Thread: Sheet Metal Buildings in Bricktown

Default Sheet Metal Buildings in Bricktown

Do you guys know if there are any plans for those old sheet metal buildings (actually don't know if that's the correct term) in Bricktown? I remember hearing awhile ago that a developer was planning to tear down a few of them, but I haven't heard anything recently.

Also, are they all being used? I drove through there the other day and some of the bigger ones look abandoned or are just being used for indoor parking. Of course it would be really nice if those could be removed to make room for housing and retail.

I believe the one on the NW corner of Lincoln and Sheridan will be torn down to make way for the new Bricktown Firestation. All those buildings are owned by Robert Meinders. He had plans back in 2003 for a large mix-use development that never came out of the ground.

Here is the thread on the buildings across the street from the ones you are talking about:

Awesome. Thanks, guys. I didn't know that area was called the steelyard, but I guess that makes sense. I see Betts says they're being torn down as we speak. I hope some mixed-use goes in there. Residential would be a big plus.

Anyone know if there's something planned for the land where the metal buildings were demolished? I went by on Friday and they were putting sand down. That makes me think of concrete and a parking lot.

Talked to the owner. He says there is no deals working at this time. What you may have seen is the fire station being built if it was facing Lincoln

No, it was on the south side across the street from the fire station area. They've got a big pile of sand, and I see that sand has already been spread over the entire lot. That's what made me think parking lot. I would think if they were just going to clear it, they wouldn't be putting sand down. I don't remember seeing that on lots being cleared to lie fallow.

The sand could be an attempt to level the site in preparation for a building, although they would have to treat the sand for it to be stable..

maybe erosion control? sopping up some type of ground seepage?
Just guessing. But as Steve reports owner doesn't have projects in place, seems it would be something rather bare bones.

Isn't that an area that would fall under Bricktown Design/Review? I have not seen anything to make me think a building is planned there at this point in time.

The last thing Bricktown needs is more parking lots, what it needs is residential, designation shopping, entertainment (House of Blues would be nice).

I think a House of Blues would be excellent! We definitely need more attractions versus just being a restaurant district. The Deep Deuce Residential area will explode throughout the years if Bricktown can bring in attractions. I still wish a promenade similar to 3rd street in Santa Monica (but smaller of course) would arrive.

Hey how about a nice Hotel/Casino/Spa where adults can go and have a good time?

20.4 miles south and you'll find most of what you seek. Not perfect, but about as close to it as you can find without traveling much greater distances.

Sure would, but not at that spot. Would be better to see it in Deep Deuce
or on the water, either the canal or down at the river once development at the river begins to take shape.

I just got back 3 hours ago from Gatlinburg, TN. They have a really nice aquarium there and I think one could do really well in OKC. Maybe I should write Ripley a letter. Since it was built by Ripley they specialized in unusal sea creatures.

Is it for sale? I knew they were having some maintenance problems, but it's a very busy church and I'll be sorry to see it go if they sell it.
