Thread: Molly Murphy's

I agree that the "name" was distinctly OKC. It's just that most restaurant concepts are a copy of something somewhere else and back then we may not have been exposed to them elsewhere like we can be now. I have known people who even in recent years thought it was a concept that originated in OKC and admit that back then I did as well since I had never seen the others in Dallas, Austin or San Antonio. It wasn't until the former co-worker and I were discussing "clients" that he told me about those projects that he did for Tayer. He had some interesting stories about him as a client.

    What else did Tayer have?

One was TaMolly's Mexican Food, now the Johnnie's on NW Expressway. It had a clay tile roof at one point, the roofer repossessed it after Tayer didn't pay him.

And what was that a ripoff of?

It was just a mix of different Dallas Tex-Mex places, not any one particular place. I've been trying to remember some of the others but I keep thinking of Val Gene places.

When I was training in Texas we would often go to the Pappas restaraunts. Not from Oklahoma, but very tasty and easy on the wallet. Pappadeaux Seafood Kitchen - The Pappas Family

I'd go to MM's if the concept reappeared here. I used to make trips to Tulsa specifically for dinner at MM in Tulsa when I lived in SEOK. Fun, not expensive, it's own lil comedy dinner theater when you got right down to it,plus nice drive each way for ample visit time rather than sitting in near silence at a movie.

Wishful thinking mainly from this board.

    Default Molly Murphy's Restaraunt

Molly Murphy's was an oklahoma icon. It was such an amazing place and I had the honor of working there for several years. I have talked to so many people and they all say that they used to go there and had the most fun and how there needs to be another one.

My thought for today is what is/was your favorite Molly Murphy's memory?

Surprised in this age of remaking movies, music, brands from the 80's that nobody has brought back Molly Murphy's.

Were you a waiter there? If so, what was your character? Tarzan was my favorite, around 1984.

    The tee-tee tour.

Having patrons wear a black garbage bag with arm and neck cut-outs, giving them sunglasses and playing "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" while the customers did the California Raisin dance.

The concept that Tayar copied for Molly Murphy's is still open in San Antonio. The Magic Time Machine had locations in Dallas, Austin and San Antonio, the Austin location closed right around the time that I moved down here in 2003. I used to work with the architect who did Molly Murphy's and TaMolly's for Tayar, they made many trips down to the locations down here to get the layout and details. I have a book that his widow wrote about Molly Murphy's and other ventures that I picked up at Full Circle, it is an interesting read.

I first went to molly murphys for my 9th b-day, my big sis took me for a b-day surprise followed them to a 89ers game ( i have the greatest big sis). I love doing the carwash on the salad car bar. When i turned 11 I had another b-day their, our waitress was dressed as a cat and was overly into her role lol, my b-day cupcake came out and she slammed my hand down on it, during our dinner my mother asked to use the restroom and the waitress grabbed her hand and walked around yelling out loud that my mom had to go potty, my other was so bright red.. I really miss this place

Yes I was a waiter there but I spent most of my time as a cocktail waiter there (I prefer the title beverage coordinator) Most people remember me as Crash Landing. I worked on roller skates as a roller derby character. I do have quite the list of characters that I used.

bluedog Jeffie's book is good and there was a book written by one of the waiters by the name of Darren Stone. "Who are you supposed to be? My life in tights" I dont know if the Time Machine is still open in Addison TX. Last time I was there it was just people in costumes not characters. Other places copied the idea later.

MrZ actually there has been a lot of talk recently about the very prospect of opening a new Molly's

    I regret that I never got to dine at Molly Murphy's . . .
But a former waitress from there helped make possible one of the most perfect meals ever enjoyed at the old Keller in the Castle.

I did get a chance to "go backstage" at Molly Murphy's--while working for a company that was bidding on a kitchen remodel not long before it, the restaurant, closed. After about five minutes of measuring the walls and floors for paint and tile, grease (etc.) prevented my tape measure from retracting.

    Still . . . (as I said) . . . I regret never having dined there.
It looks like it was a lot of fun.

I really enjoyed the Molly's in Tulsa. Can't recall having ever dining at the OKC one, though there are lots of things I can't recall according to some, so who really knows. No one's threatened any pictures in any event.

Didn't know there was one in Tulsa. Went one time for my birthday shortly after I had moved back here for college. Don't remember too much about it other than a line-dancing thing, the salad bar car and the character wait staff. We had Marvin Martin. loved it. Can't give a review on the food as I don't recall what I had or if it was good/bad. Mollys was a place to be experienced more than anything else I guess.

The food was fine but nothing exceptional. As you said, the experience and entertainment was what you went for. I had a lot of different waiters (characters) in my visits and don't remember anyone in particular that stood out. The experience that always sticks in my mind was when I was there with my wife and kids in a booth. It was sort of a dark alcove area. We had been there for at least 5 minutes when someone who had been hiding on a ledge over our booth jumped out and scared the kids to death.

Then you should perhaps get out more often and make better memories.

You know, with the way everyone seems so overly sensitive and easily offended these days, I just don't know if this concept would work today.

Suppose the host/ess could always administer a humor test at the door. Or maybe everyone who goes in has to pass through a fake TSA enhanced screening (Welcome to MM .. do you prefer full body screening or gloved patdowns? How many in your party?)

Of course, if you are walking into some place called Molly Murphy's House of Fine Repute, see folks in costume, and you act like those are real TSA agents then they oughta be allowed to have a GI Joe costumed paint ball sniper on the rooftop taking shots at you as you are escorted out.
