I hate Ethanol 1,000 times over. It's absolutely horrible. I used to get 22-24mpg and today I did the math on my nearly-empty tank and the number was no 19mpg. In essence, I've been losing 50 miles a tank using the cheaper gas, all to save like $2.00 a fillup. I'd save a few bucks more using the pricier stuff. I believe I'll be switching to the non-alcohol gas.

Here's a list I came across of Metro Oklahoma City stores who sell gasoline without ethanol/alcohol:

    September 4, 2008
    Metro area NO Alcohol/Ethanol stations.
This list is subject to change at any time. Look for the No Alcohol stickers and banners to be sure you’re purchasing 100% pure gasoline.

Has it just been in the last couple of months or so that ethanol has come to be in our gas supplies? I never noticed anyone talking about it until this thread took up residence here. Now it seems like everyone is talking about it. I noticed my own car's gas mileage has dropped recently, and when I called a repair shop to ask about putting it on a diagnostic and the mechanic asked why, he launched into a diatribe about ethanol. Well, maybe not a diatribe, but certainly he thought that was a factor in my problem. (I assumed the ethanol had always been there...)

No....It's been in a lot of station's gas for years. They just made it a requirement to LABEL it so recently.

I haven't read through all the posts to see if this has been covered, but I'm a big fan of using STP Gas Treatment every once in a while, and a HUGE fan of their Total Fuel System Treatment product.

My F-150 was running poorly a few years back, just because I only drove short trips. I always had all the proper maintenance done and such, but the engine was knocking and the power was poor. I used the fuel system treatment and it cleared right up. Now I try to use it twice a year. I really believe it's a good product.

I'm also getting ready to try a bottle of Lucas Tune-Up in a Bottle, which bills itself as an upper cylinder lubricant and injector cleaner. A guy at an auto store told me a lot of people swear by that product.

Starting appearing in Oklahoma City for the first time since the early 80's in the Spring of 08. Tulsa got their first taste in the fall of 07.

Not correct, Oklahoma City started getting ethanol blended in by some of the gas stations in February 08. Labeling was mandated July 1st by SB 1451.

The whole reason around ethanol being used was it burns cleaner. It wasn't about mileage. Plus its renewable.

Most of my driving is city. I really don't see a big enough diff either way in my SUV. It sucks both ways. Around 14 w/ ethanol, 14.5-15 w/ straight gas.

Looks like I'm going to have to take my question elsewhere for a definitive answer. But even if they weren't selling ethanol until February, my gas mileage problem didn't start until this summer, so it would seem ethanol is probably NOT the problem. Maybe I just need to find a mechanic who will actually listen to me (always a good idea in any case)...

jsibelius, Some stations started selling in Feb. 08. Most came on later. Easy do it yourself test, get really low on fuel and try a tank of 100%. I know my car gets 15% better fuel mileage on 100% gas. That=about 50 cents/gallon savings.

  13. Default Re: Gas Stations WITHOUT Ethanol

Jet skis both started acting up this weekend... everyone and I mean everyone was adamant that ethanol was to blame.. you would have thought it was arsenic.. seriously.

I never heard so many different people swear that ethanol was sooo very bad for engines..

Now, I'm worried I've screwed up my engine on my vehicle .. probably time to trade it in..lol I kid, I kid, but I do think I'm done with ethanol... only pure gasoline from here on out.

No offense, but I think people are way off in blaming a lot of their efficiency problems on ethanol.

E100 is about 85% as efficient as pump gas, and today's E10 blend is still 90% gasoline. So any engineer will tell you that your efficiency loss is not going to be worse than 2-3%. If people think there is a problem with efficiency, they will find it. If you're getting poor mileage, replace your spark plugs and get a tune up.

I did try this and didn't pick up on a big difference.

This is what I'm concerned about. I didn't want to blow off my problem as Ethanol if it was really something else like dirty fuel injectors or something else more serious.

By all means, try that STP product, I believe it's called Total Fuel System Treatment, available at WalMart for maybe 5 to 7 dollars, something like that. It's like chicken soup, it can't hurt.

Put that stuff in, then get out on the highway for a few minutes and let your engine run at a nice brisk pace. This stuff blows the cobwebs right out. Don't fill up again until you are nearly empty, so the product will have the right dilution rate.

Ethanol has a 66% lower BTU value than gasoline. That being said, E-10 based on its BTU value should give you 3.4% less MPG. However; each and every vehicle since about 1987 uses oxygen sensors and an ECM to control the fuel mixture ratios. Ethanol is an oxygenate and most oxygen sensors read the exhaust with ethanol as lean; therefore, informing the ECM to richen the fuel mixture up. That's how you can loose more than 3 to 4 % when burning E-10. The most important part is Each and every vehicle is different and can perform differently on ethanol blended fuels. Most (general statement) on average will lose between 10 to 15% in fuel mileage on E-10. Test each and every vehicle yourself and find out what saves you money. (Not even mentioning increased maintenance costs by quicker replacement of fuel system components caused by ethanol's corrosive properties)

My job uses a fair amount of gasoline during daily operations. Two of our shuttle vans(I should mention the vans are 07 and 08 models) have had serious problems running on 87 ethanol.

Our fleet mechanic suggested we switch to 89 premium unleaded. Since the change the problems have gone away. The octane level seems to off set the effects of the ethanol. At least for a little while anyway. Only time will tell how long the switch will work.

Hmmm. This may explain why I've had no issues: I buy the 91-octane stuff, as specified by the manufacturer. (On the east coast I buy 93.)

The gas station at 2nd & Kelly is ethanol free.

Also, the McDonald's at 15th & Santa Fe has a couple of pumps that are ethanol free.

I always like that store, Not (The Micky Dee's). They quit selling Super and Plus and have notes about which pumps have ethanol and which don't. Very confusing. Are they really sure?

  22. Default Re: Gas Stations WITHOUT Ethanol

I'm done with ethanol too. For my car, with complete comparsion of amount fill up and amount paid, the gas with ethanol lasts me one week while gas with no ethanol lasts me two weeks.

I prefer paying $50 bux every 2 weeks for gas only instead of $30 each week with ethanol.

  23. Default Re: Gas Stations WITHOUT Ethanol

With all this talk of "pure" gasoline, I took the time to put a few dollars worth of the real stuff in on top of my crappy 7-11 gasoline. Maybe it's just the placebo effect, but I swear it ran smoother with a bit more power, and that was just putting in ten dollars worth on top of a half full tank. I think I'm going to start seeking out the real stuff from now on.

And I still encourage everyone to make the trip to WalMart and buy some STP. It seems to work very well.

  24. Default Re: Gas Stations WITHOUT Ethanol

    What is STP?

Yes, my car is running smoother on "pure" gasoline.

After 4 fill-ups on pure gasoline, I too am a believer. The AM/PM on 15th and Sooner has the no-ethanol blend and the price is usually less than 5 cents higher than Shell's 10% ethanol blend.

Well worth it - my miles per gallon improved by 5, city driving.
