I think Bush has a few options in his next term.
1. He can finally decide to unite this country by reaching across the aisle and compromising with his Democratic opponents. Although he did this in Texas, he hasn't really been too successful at it since he's been in the White House. If he can work well with the Democrats in Congress, he'll leave a lasting legacy. 2. As a lame duck president he can conclude that he has nothing to lose and try to push his far right agenda through, further diving the country, but still getting his bills passes and making his Right winged supporters happy. For the sake of the country, I hope he chooses option number 1, because, it's still pretty obvious that this nation is clearly divided. I don't consider a 51% to 48% victory for the president and clear cut victory. It just shows the continued divisiveness of this country on clear issues. |

I must say...again Zobgy called this race correctly. He gave Bush a 1 point margin. Bush won by a little more, but Zogby still called it right. In the meantime, Gallup claimed the race would be a tie. I wonder if they did that to hold their credibility, thinknig the race could go either way.
I think another reason Bush won yesterday is because he simply was better at getting his supporters out to the polls. They said that the candidate who got his supporters to the polls would win. This time around, I think the Bush campaign really had a well thought out get out the vote campaign. |

I really hope he restyles his administration as fiscally conservative. Spending and government programs have really gotten out of control on his watch! The drug benefit to medicare was a monster of a program to add.
The next 4 years should be spent slashing and hacking at government spending. I'm heartened though that we selected a president that actually has a pair -- he has the power to do these things if he wants to. The next 4 years should prove interesting. |

Bush will cement his place in history (policy-wise) if he does something to reform Social Security. His payroll plan hasn't been fleshed out, and some don't think it's safe. If he truly is someone who does what is right, no matter how unpopular it is, he would ask Americans to sacrifice by either cutting benefits, raising the retirement age, or some other measure. It's a tough problem, but that's what we expect presidents to do -- tackle problems, if not drive Congress to.
