The president has been discussing lately a plan to overhaul the Social Security System. Unfortunately, back in the Johnson days, the govt. decided that it was okay to rob Social Security to make up for budget deficits......so much of the money older Americans payed into the system all of those years has been spent in other ways. Personally, I think the government has wronged the American people by spending their retirement money, but that's my opinion. Had the government put Social Securty in a lock box years ago, and not allowed themselves to withdraw from it at any time, we wouldn't have problems with Social Security today. But, that's all water under the bridge. So, what do you think about the president's plan to fix the system? His fix involves young people being able to store money away in personal accounts, with their names on the account, so the government can't raid the fund!

Personally, I think such a plan should've been put in place years ago. Anything to keep the government from raiding the plan. Simply putting a lock box on Social Security would've had the same effect.
I just question how the government will continue paying for current Social Security payouts to our seniors. If a new system is put in place, young people won't be paying into the system to help pay for the retirement funds being shelled out to our seniors. I'm guessing benefits will have to be cut. Is this fair to seniors who worked hard for years for these benefits? Probably not. But, the buck has to stop somewhere. |

But then again, I'm not going to rely on social security even existing when I retire. I already have a pretty good start on my retirement savings, and I'm only 25.

You bring up a good point Midtowner. Too many people think Social Security is a retirement plan. It was never intended to be a complete retirement plan. Instead, it was designed to supplement retirement when one was older.
Regardless, had the government not raided OUR money, we wouldn't have this problem today. |
