Default This is garbage

A few details about the bailout:

THE changes
Tax breaks sweeten the plan
Millions of taxpayers, thousands of businesses and groups as diverse as solar power developers and natural disaster victims will see tax relief with the House vote Friday to approve and send to the president a $700 billion financial rescue plan.

The tax relief package attached to the rescue bill promotes renewable energy development and extends dozens of tax breaks from the critical research and development tax credit to breaks for such narrowly focused groups as motor sports racetrack owners, film producers and bicycle commuters.
The renewable energy part of the package alone, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said, will "create and save half-a-million good-paying jobs in America immediately.”
The renewable energy incentives include an eight-year extension of investment credits for solar energy, as well as breaks for wind, geothermal and other alternative sources. The solar industry says extension of the credits through 2016 would produce an extra 440,000 jobs and more than $230 billion in investments. The measure also has $8 billion in tax breaks for disaster victims, $5 billion for higher education tuition deductions and $400 million in deductions for teachers who buy school supplies with their own money.
There are also some four dozen small provisions. Among them, with projected costs over 10 years:
Extending an expired provision that gives Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands a rebate against excise taxes charged on imported rum. The rebate, at $13.50 per proof gallon, helps finance local infrastructure projects. The cost is $192 million.
Establishing a new tax credit ranging from $2,500 to $7,500 for purchasers of plug-in electric-drive vehicles. Cost: $758 million.
Extending tax credits that expired at the end of 2007 for certain domestic corporations involved in American Samoa economic development. Cost: $33 million.
Extending a credit of up to $10,000 for the training of mine rescue team members. The credit expires at the end of this year and the one-year extension costs $4 million.
Enacting President Bush’s proposal to erase the debt of the black lung disability trust fund at a cost of $1.3 billion.
Extending for one year a seven-year depreciation timetable that motorsport racing facilities have had for some years, the tax break amusement parks get
Extending for five years a program that reduces import duties on some wool fabrics. The tariff relief benefits U.S. worsted wool fabric producers that use imported fibers and yarns. Cost: $148 million. ASSOCIATED PRESS

Everyone needs to vote on Nov. 4th All Oklahoma politicians who voted for/supported this measure need to be fired. Tom Cole just lost my vote.

Thank you congress for passing this crap now we in the working class get to look forward to several decades of tax increase to clean up this mess.

I thought we had a goal of paying off the national debt not charging it up like a teenager at the mall.

Congress has once again screwed Joe Citizen.

I am I the only one thinking the recent bankruptcy laws that forced Joe Citizen to pay his bill needs to be repealed. If you think about the banking industry has just done what it prevented Joe Citizen from doing a couple of years ago.

Where is the outrage? Why are people just allowing this to happen? People should be in the streets protesting this garbage.

On Nov 5, I would love to see the headlines read "Every Politician that voted yes on Bailout Defeated"

Agreed. We MUST send the politicians a message. They are NOT in charge, we are. They seem not to believe that.

Coburn and Fallin will not be getting my vote.

Ha, that's easy to say if you're a Democrat. But the indisputable fact is that most voters in Oklahoma will be voting to keep their incumbent congress people in office no matter how they have voted on controversial issues. To most Oklahomans it not about we the people. Instead, Oklahomans most desire to get across that we are for the government and we will keep it just as it is. The incumbents must absolutely stay, no matter what, thank you.

By the way Inhofe, not Coburn is up for reelection.

IT IS A SAD THING TO BE SURE.................. Tax Poem -
At first I thought this was funny...then I realized the awful
truth of it. Be sure to read all the way to the end!

Tax his land,
Tax his bed,
Tax the table
A t which he's fed.

Tax his tractor,
Tax his mule,
Teach him taxes
Are the rule.

Tax his work,
Tax his pay,
He works for peanuts Anyway!

Tax his cow,
Tax his goat,
Tax his pants,
Tax his coat.

Tax his ties,
Tax his shirt,
Tax his work,
Tax his dirt.

Tax his tobacco,
Tax his drink,
Tax him if he
Tries to think.

Tax his cigars,
Tax his beers,
If he cries
Tax his tears.

Tax his car,
Tax his gas,
Find other ways
To tax his ass.
Tax all he has
Then let him know
That you won't be done
Till he has no dough.

When he screams and hollers,
Then tax him some more,
Tax him till
He's good and sore.

Then tax his coffin,
Tax his grave,
Tax the sod in
Which he's laid.

Put these words; upon his tomb,
'Taxes drove me to my doom...'

When he's gone,
Do not relax,
Its time to apply
The inheritance tax. There is an:

Accounts Receivable Tax Building Permit Tax CDL license Tax Cigarette Tax Corporate Income Tax Dog License Tax Excise Taxes Federal Income Tax Federal Unemployment Tax (FUTA) Fishing License Tax Food License Tax Fuel Permit Tax Gasoline Tax (42 cents per gallon) Gross Receipts Tax Hunting License Tax Inheritance Tax Inventory Tax IRS Interest Charges IRS Penalties (tax on top of tax) Liquor Tax Luxury Taxes Marriage License Tax Medicare Tax Personal Property Tax And a: Property Tax

Coburn and Fallin have provided more good than harm. I'm not happy that they
voted for the bill but I'll continue to vote for them.

Fallin is obsessed with every family's values except her own, which makes her the quintessential social conservative.

I'm so sick of politics, the crappy economy and hearing about it 24/7.

This is all so depressing and stressful. I need to find a happy place... blah.

Anyone else starting to get bogged down?

That's wishful thinking, at best. She has never shown any signs whatsoever of
being obsessed with every family's value except her own.

She had an awful marriage to an abusive husband that left her. Does that make
her a hypocrite? No. Does that mean she can't be involved with doing what's in
the best interest of the state and nation? Not by any stretch of the imagination.

Even the most hard lined anti-family leftist can't disagree with that.

Yep. I usually don't try to escape reality, but right now, I'm done.

Am finding all sorts of reruns to watch on TV, other radio stations besides NPR, and have switched to magazines instead of the newspaper. Contemplating not voting just to be obstinate, but since it's a month away, I know I'll change my mind.

Going to stop looking at OKCTalk for the next several weeks to avoid some of this discussion and get things back into perspective.

I admit I was a little off my rocker when I posted this. It just angers me when the people that are supposed to be the voice of the people vote directly against the wishes of the people. They ignore thousands of angry citizens and trust the word of Washington insiders and lobbyists.

XM Radio, IPOD and my Cox DVR have helped me keep my sanity this election season. I see very few political ads this bailout crap is the first and only thing that will get a rise out me during this election.

I believe what you posted was true before the stock market fell off a small cliff

A shift in tone in calls to House members on bailout - International Herald Tribune

Many of the voters in the United States who initially opposed the $700 billion economic bailout plan changed their mind after stock markets dived when the House of Representatives rejected the bill, prompting some representatives to reconsider their stance ahead of the crucial vote Friday.

Before the House rejected the bailout Monday, 90 percent of those who called and sent e-mail messages to Representative Joe Barton, a Texas Republican, opposed the bailout, said a spokesman, Sean Brown.

"One guy called me yesterday and said: 'I paid off two mortgages on my own, and I don't want to see us bail out people who got in over their heads. I was responsible enough to make the right decisions. They should do the same thing,"' Brown said.

Then the markets nose-dived and the tone changed as frantic investors, including retirees, called to complain about what the House had done.

It's not just going to go away by ignoring it, thats what the CEO's and government are counting on, people just ignoring it and being passive so they can pounce again.

If the House had voted for it the first time we would have saved about $100 billion. As you can see from the list much of that pork was directly aimed at the deep south politicians who initially voted against the bill.

I for one am happy that this went through, my main concern is that it may not be enough. I'm less worried about a tax increase than I am the possibility deflation could kick in. Think about the possibility of getting a -5% raise for the next three years vs. a tax increase.

You know, I have been trying to think of a way to explain this whole mess in non-financial terms and a thought just came to me.

You know how sometimes if you pick up the phone following a major disaster and try to make a call you get a 'double busy signal'? That's because SBC may only have 30% of the phone lines really required to cover a neighborhood. In reality most of the time not everyone is going to be on the phone at the same time, so they make sure they install just enough lines to be profitable and meet needs. Occasionally a full-up scenario hits and then you get a busy signal. That's just the way it is.

Our federal thrift banking system is kind of the same thing. We don't have enough money to cover everything in all the banks. Most of the time this should be fine, but if everyone 'picks up the phone to make a call at the same time,' e.g. the markets all collapse or everyone decides to yank their money, then there is going to be a problem. The first thing to go is easy credit because in effect the available money supply has shrunk. As time goes on it starts to effect everything.

In essence the bailout bill just 'added more phone lines' so that hopefully we can all keep making calls. But this isn't a sure deal... if people are freaked out enough they may still all try to make that call at the same time. But hopefully they won't now.

People aren't gonna revolt against the government until they have nothing left to lose, like when they no longer have a job and have been foreclosed from out of their homes. It takes a lot of people to revolt, though, and we're still a long ways from there.

This was one of the main differences between us and the Germans(who turn to the NAZIS).
We just barely stayed a democracy, we had high unemployment, restless masses, we had some wealthy folks plotting a coup, but got caught at it.
Its a miracle we survive as a democracy, or technically a federal republic.

The USA is a Representative Republic and not a democracy.

A Representative Republic is guarded by laws and the executive magistracy is
carefully limited; both in the extent and the duration of its power. The Constitution
of the US was carefully written to prevent the nation from becoming a democracy.
