Default Electoral College

I know this isn't completely accurate for the 2008 election but it has some fascinating info on the past elections going all the way back to 1789. Lots of interesting trends as far as how different regions tend to vote .

ie..Oklahoma last voted for a Democrat for President in 1964

...how the west coast and northeast (population centers) tend to vote for a democrat lately

...and how the northeast used to be strictly Republican and the south was Democratic until about the 60's then they switched.

Any ideas as to why some of these changes occured? Is it because of income, or college education, or maybe age? Religion maybe a factor too. I was curious why Oklahoma tends to vote so overwhelmingly Republican in national elections.

On the right side of the page is a cool little Electoral college quiz I didn't do very well, but its informative.

Religion is huge. I love hearing "You can't be a christian and vote for Obama".

The GOP's "southern strategy" of going after the racists who were mad about the civil rights reforms in the 60s (along with some people who blame peace activists for losing the Vietnam War), which was followed by many democrats going to Reagan and the GOP as a backlash against Carter and Democratic corruption. A large number of Oklahomans are still stuck in such a 70s-80s state of mind.

Lately the extremist right-wing Christians that have taken over the GOP, which sadly includes a lot of Okies. The Regan Democrats nationally are now swinging back to the Democratic party (I suspect we'll hear the term "Obama Republicans" a lot soon), due to the extremist religious nature of the GOP, along with its utter failures and corruption of the last decade. Okies will be the last to catch on in a decade or two as usual, as the rest of the world will have already moved on to something else by then!

And yet McCain and Palin are actually Christian enough for voting Oklahoma Republican Christians?
