Default 48 states will be able to vote for Bob Barr... not Oklahoma.

Why is that?

You should see the ballots in other states filled up with meaningless candidates who won't ever get 1% of the vote.

I actually don't think Oklahoma's ballot access law is horribly unreasonable. If the libertarian party in this state had enough votes to be significant, surely they could collect the requisite amount of signatures.... but they can't.

While I like the Libertarian platform, I think Bob Barr is someone who is past his prime. I wouldn't be voting for him anyhow.

I'd like to have some choices other than Obama and McCain.

If not I'll have to write someone's name on my ballot. And THAT would truly be a wasted vote.

Primarily due to the arguably corrupt practices of the local government in enforcing the ridiculous ballot access law. The Libertarian party is, from what I understand, not even allowed to bring anyone in from out of state to help collect signatures. But they aren't established IN the state. Nice way to keep ANY other party from ever establishing in Oklahoma, huh?

Worst part is, many individuals are waking up to the logos and pathos of the party's platform. Many OKlahomans would probably like the Libertarian party of they were exposed to it. But they won't be. I love our state, but sometimes, I hate the way it behaves.

Local governments don't enforce ballot access laws. These laws are the responsibility of the Oklahoma State Election Board.

I'm not positive about the out-of-state workers being able to collect signatures. I am certain that is the case for initiative petitions, but I'm not so sure about signatures for third-party candidates.

As far as the Libertarian party not being "established" in our state, I'm not sure what you mean. You certainly can't blame the state for that. They don't have to have ballot access in order to organize, collect signatures, etc. The fact is that they just don't have the funding to do it. The state can't do much about third parties organizing here without running afoul of the 1st Amendment.

If the Libertarians had the funding and support to be here, then they'd be here.

I've discovered that I can call my state representatives and share with them my discontent.

Oklahoma Legislature Home Page

The link above will help you find YOUR representatives. (Sorry to say, I needed that link to find out who mine were)

To be one of the third party presidential candidates on the ballot in Oklahoma you gotta be rich like Ross Perot.

Scott Inman's secretary got back with me. She indicated that Scott would be very interested in addressing this issue. She asked me to put it in writing in an email. She basically said what to do is to ask Scott to introduce legislation that would make it easier to get on the ballot.

So, I'm going to!

Pretty encouraging though.

California's 2003 recall election is living proof of a need for Ballot Access Laws. Every clown in the state ran for govenor.

There's gotta be a happy medium.

However, I wouldn't mind having to wade through 30 names on a ballot. It's better than being stuck with the same two every time.
